"What if Desert strike, but with unhinged adult-swim humour". This Strike-like is a middle-thumb. It's entertaining enough for the up-thumb, but the main part of the game is the shootin' and flying', and that's far too derpy. The controls are really weird and unintuitive. It doesn't make the game flow properly. The default options felt pretty awful, but there's a few options in the menu to try and tweak them, however every combination felt good at one thing but bad at another. I think a big part of the problem is the split between air and ground, and having the ground shooting have a small gimbal. For the options where the copter body followed the mouse, it flipped around instantly with no momentum. There was an variable aim assist option, and when turned up the game felt much better, but also more trivial to the point of it felt like cheating. After nearly 2 hours of play, most of that was spent in the menu, or swapping between controller and mouse, trying out all the different movement combinations to try and salvage something and make it feel good. I just want to play the kaboomy helicopter game, not tweak settings! The developer needed (or needs to, if they are continuing development) to rethink the entire thing, choose a single system, and polish it until it's fun, and THEN design the game around that. Leaving the parameters of the control scheme up to the player to choose in the middle of an existing game is poor design, as it's passing this hard job from the designers and onto every individual player. Actually, typing that makes me realise this is a thumbs down. The whole control system is too wacky and undefined to be a thumbs up, (Also, everything to do with the diagetic menu UI, in-game HUD, and ammo system is weird and crazy too, but those are minor gripes compared to the flaws in what should be the bread and butter: the controls)
Flying around is just fine and you can be quite acrobatic, just like in Desert Strike but when it comes to trying to aim, it just feels off and I find myself constantly struggling as the helicopter never seems to truly aim where I intend it to. Not unlike the Strike series, I suppose. Unfortunately, this is sort of a bullet hell game whereas the Strike series took it more slowly. I can't quite describe it but it became painfully apparent during aerial combat where you seem to only be able to destroy enemies if you have enemies 'walk' into your line-of-fire which requires a ton of ammunition and you really don't carry all that much. Targeting ground enemies is relatively more forgiving due to the fact that that the turret moves independently from the helicopter during combat but during aerial combat, you can only fire straight ahead and while writing this review it suddenly hit me that the best way to describe this is by comparing it to playing an FPS game using only your keyboard. This is fine during the first few missions where you can fly around freely and grab power-ups when you need them but during the first boss fight, you suddenly find yourself boxed in with hit-scanning flying and ground bogies which totally changes the dynamic of the game as you go from gracefully dodging projectiles to suddenly hiding in corners without any way to get health back. If this is the first boss fight, I'm not really looking forward to the rest. I think it'd have been better if the boss had its health go down in stages and allowed you to leave the box to pick up the upgrades you left behind (you've been good at managing resources, why be punished for that?) and only recovering health up to the stage you got the boss' health down to, as punishment for leaving the area. I also find the UI somewhat poorly designed:. Why can I only see my total ammo when I press tab? Why are the icons so small and on the side of the screen? Eyes focus on the chopper, not the edges. Nothing important on the deges, why force me to look there? Why do so few developers understand this? Are they still gaming on 4:3 19" monitors? And why did they think white makes for good reticules? Yes, it does turn red on occasion which is good but try telling apart the dotted line for aerial combat from your environment consistently when there's a hundred sprites on the screen.
A beautiful throwback to the 90's-era isometric helicopter gunship shooter Desert Strike. You have no idea how long I've waited for something like this done tastefully and with reverence towards the original title. You pilot the Megacopter (btw that's how I'd call my ex-mother in law) and you are sent on various missions throughout the globe to stop the evil Reptoid forces: Epstein, Gates, Trump and other lunatics who are not just destroying our planet, but also eating all of our pizza and THAT CANNOT STAND. Our megacopter Balbina Knot is sentient which means she'll show you her fav tiktok accounts while you're trying to stay alive as lizard men keep approaching the generator and the generator is losing power. But seriously, this game was created with love and passion and anyone with a working brain can tell. The graphics, music, hilarious story and the classic gameplay are all of the highest quality and it's a damn shame not many people know about this title. You owe it to yourself to try it. Get in your mot... I mean megacopter, upgrade it and make your enemies bleed. Remember... it's all for pizza and here ALL OF US LOVE PIZZA!
Wonderful and imaginative updating of the 1990s-era isometric helicopter gunship game Desert Strike, as you equip powerful upgrades on your sentient Megacopter to battle evil Reptoid forces, including screen-filling monster bosses. https://youtu.be/zDxokb0ZQyU?si=CDwnFqmZiNQTmLA5 Instead of trying to emulate real-world helicopter models, you're given extremely flexible upgrading options of one "super" helicopter gunship, including changing speed, armor, missiles/cannons, and more exotic weapons like plasma and lasers, and powerful "spirit" special attacks. https://youtu.be/xCq6xrZw_Ek?si=T2fDIOIR3OhwBj0K A couple missions and some boss fights can be extremely challenging, although the game offers different difficulty settings that you boost your chopper a bit if you need it. Very diverse enemies, including enemy helicopter gunships, heavily armed turrets and all matter of alien but hung monsters. I feel like the game's very underappreciated, and I've tried to get fans of the current Cleared Hot to at least give it a look. The price has dropped quite a bit, I recommend it for anyone needing a Desert Strike-style itch or bored Cleared Hot players looking for something to play until the next early access update for CH drops. :) Also, Megacopter has a great Chaff Flares system that CH should copy. :) https://youtu.be/tzZbxOvPd04?si=Ji-fg4DyJHbu6eUX I think my original review for this got deleted somehow, so I've re-posted it and beefed it up with some gameplay videos I did back in 2024.
I have now completed the game on both easy and normal difficulties (the only two on offer). There are reviews complaining of the controls, and I can see that they appear to be using keyboard and mouse in each case. The controls for joypads (as a twin stick shooter) are very responsive and work pretty well in the default configuration. If you are struggling, I would suggest giving the joypad controls a go and see how you get on. The story line is very wacky, but enjoyable enough to see you through the 4 different scenarios. The boss fights can be brutal on easy, and this is even more-so on the normal difficulty where managing the meagre shield drops to keep you alive is paramount (you may only have 2 available in the fighting area, and collecting them can also be a challenge in itself when you are low on health and trying to dodge an onslaught of bullets, missiles, and flying enemies). Graphically it is decent enough and runs smoothly. It can sometimes be difficult spotting where your reticule is, but your reticule will lock onto an enemy that it passes over whilst you are firing, so you can encircle your target whilst shooting and dodging any attacks against you until you release the fire button or the target dies. You have three weapons at your disposal (once unlocked). Your main chain gun (can be upgraded to a minigun later on), rockets (can be upgraded to cluster rockets) and an energy weapon (either plasma balls or laser beam). The megacopter itself has a couple of abilities which you can unlock and change in you hanger, but they will have limited uses depending on how many "blood orb slots" you unlock for it, and if you pick up any dropped blood orbs during the round. It has been compared to the strike series by some, and to a degree this could be the case (both feature helicopters, and you have a grapple to pick up things), but they are different kinds of games. If you go into this expecting a more modern strike game, then you may be a little disappointed. The game is around 4-5 hours to complete, and was generally fun to play without overstaying its welcome, or dragging on for too long. Each mission will take around 15-20 minutes if you go hunting for all the pickups at the end of the round.
Short and pretty well-designed "strike"-like vehicular combat arcade. There`s a simple rpg-system, though it`s optional. Soundtrack is modern synths, though not too varied. Could be finished in one byte, and that`s actually great.
Not much to see here. I was looking for something reminiscent of the Jungle/Desert Strike, but this is definitely not it. Everything is kinda basic and repetitive. Not sure it makes a very good bullet hell either.
MEGACOPTER: BLADES OF THE GODDESS
I had just beaten Reflex Unit: Strike Ops and on its Steam page, I was suggested Megacopter. The game is dirt cheap so I decided to give it a shot! So yeah... yet, another "STRIKE series" inspired game! This one however is way more "arcade-y", cartoonish and goofy humor. The synthwave soundtrack is pretty good and get's you going on a rampage spree. Basically, it is a goofier version of CLEARED HOT! but with some Reptoids invasion instead. How is it? The gameplay is quite simple with a lot of moving around, dodging and shooting. There is an upgrade system for your helicopter loadouts and its special powers too. The music is quite good! The cartoonish visuals aren't my thing but there is some blood&gore into this! The story is fine and the highlight of this game would be its upgrade system since you do get to move faster, have more firepower, etc.
POSITIVES:
+Nostalgia +Fun Gameplay / Combat Loop +Fine Controls (KB/M was good on my end) +Great synthwave soundtrack. +Sound Design. +Megacopter upgrades & special powers (also the loadout system). +Good Value for its low price
NEGATIVES:
-No ultrawide monitor support. Even on the main menu, it says it will be added but the game haven't gotten any update in a long while. Megacopter is still playable in a window mode but clearly not the best way to enjoy it. -Story is filled with goofy unfunny humor. -Cartoonish visuals aren't my thing.
RECOMMENDATION:
This one is way more arcade-y than Reflex Unit, Cleared Hot! and all games of the Strike series. It plays more like a twin-stick shooter than your usual helicopter game. It's not bad but not my preference. For its low price of ~4$ CAD, I got a good 6 hours of fun with it. However, I do prefer the STRIKE series, Reflex Unit and Cleared Hot! more so check these out if interested!
its badass!! you unlock powers by ripping out hearts! desert strike series with cyberpunk aztech things, KILL REPTILIANS !! the controls feel great with xbox type controller
