Mayhem ZX is an abandoned Early Access 2D retro pixel twin stick platform shooter that's been slapped together with the godawful GameMaker Studio video game construction kit from Yoyogames. It's a somewhat generic retro platformer shooter that was abandoned by the developers before they even added any of the content into the game, so it just has an empty and pointless target shooting mode that does nothing but show off the established fact that GameMaker Studio has 2D platformer libraries (and they aren't very good, either). Like most GameMaker Studio construction kit "games", this features lazy 2D retro pixel "art", instead of professionally done, contemporary PC graphics. There's three main reasons a game will use this crutch. First, the developers lack the talent to come up with contemporary graphics and visuals and hope "nostalgia" will be an acceptable excuse. Second, they lack the proper budget to develop a video game and can't afford to hire anyone who can do video game graphics properly. Finally, they are limited by the godawful GameMaker Studio which isn't really capable of cutting edge visuals. All three of these are unacceptable compromises PC gamers should never have to put up with. GameMaker Studio is a very poor quality game construction kit, and unsurprisingly results in products that have little to no value as games, especially when compared to the work of professional developers who create genuine products for gamers. Just like you can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear, you can't make a good game from a completely crap game engine. Using a video game construction kit requires little to no talent or skill as a game developer. Very often, GameMaker Studio is used to make shovelware and lazy cash grabs, which is exactly the case here as the developers tried to sting gamers for $2 USD for a game they had no capability or even intention to finish. Unethically, the developer sold keys to this abandoned Early Access game into cheap, nasty game bundles, where they knew it would be advertised and sold as a complete game. This seems to have been done in an attempt to mislead gamers into buying a knowingly faulty, defective and incomplete product. When a developer does this for a game they have zero practical intention of completing, this is essentially a scam, an intention to get paid for a broken/unfinished product. Often this is done as an exit strategy, as the developer takes the money and runs. No refunds have been given, the developer kept all the money they took from gamers.

First notice: That while I have had no personal involvement in making the game, the Key was provide to me by an old friend who is the artist. Second Notice: Review is in progress, Will update as I get to play more and that at any point This review can change entierly to reflect the current build of the game. Starting with clear comparisons to Duck Game & Tower Fall Ascension. Its an action based 2D arena combat shooter. Presentation: You boot up the game and get a visualy pleasing game logo, leading to one of two modes. Single-player & Multi-player. As of this build there is only 1-Stage and a hand full of characters to play as. The characters themselves are look great, are unique enough to be memorable, and deverse enough that no two are the same. I reccomend to Pump up that permotional material and make people want to play them, Likeable and artistaly unique characters sell. And all the art is done well, Though i feel some aspect in the backgrounds blend to much togther. For example, there is a large arrow above your character to note who and were you are, My issue being its to big and it blends to much into atleast the single-player stage. Character protraits are fantastic, but with the scale of the world to your character it's a little dissapointing but understandable that what you actually play is not as athestically pleasing. Gameplay: The first thing to figure out is how everything works, It's all simple to understand and what I expected to be Wall slide, Jump, shoot etc. Were in there inteded and easy to find functions, Though i can see were a controller is better for movement, mouse is the clear definitive winner in aiming. While every character looks unique, there not so holy diffrenet, Sure stats are there, the numbers add up but that's really all they are untill a better implamentation arrives that gives more of unique twist to each characters gameplay. Everyone is also extremely heavy, movement is hard to judge when gravity decided that going up has ended and beats you down to the ground, it makes jumps harder and in turn can cause frustrations. Guns have a clear cut winner, The flame thrower wins the day, if you have it, you win. It's great to look at but the power gap is clear. But everything aims perfectly and is really fine tuned greatly, Some sounds don't activate, notabley the shotgun sometimes blasts with no sound. Sometimes if your to close to the target a bullet with decided to pass through the object or person rather then hit but it's a rarity. The Melee weapon, duel knives is lacking, Clearly useless and needs more impact, larger swipe range, faster rapid fire swings, Something to make it contend even with the lowlest of ranged weapons. Single-player as of now it's a Smash Brother style destory the targets, and is a good testing ground to learn, highly reccomend that be your first go to before multiplayer, but could benafit from AI fights, or even small story later on. Multiplayer - Not fully tested, need more time. Is local player only. Which is the goal of the developer but i must point out Tower Fall: Ascension's want of this exact same design goal and how poorly liked the choice was by community and how it affected sales badly. While on a Console it is far more likely, most computer set ups don't allowly for easy local play, And also the platform for PC has be decidely online for decades far before the Ps2's and Xbox's days of Lan or Online. I do suggest the devs invest into online at some point down the line. Tempoary final thoughts: It's got a future, It's going to have clear compatition from Duck game and others of the like. But focus on tighting up movement, and make it stand out from the pact & you'll make a mark. If they decided to stick to Local Online Multiplayer - is disappointing due to alot of my closest friend being in diffrenet states or countries that I can not play with, but there are work arounds. I would reccomend this game to any fan of the genre, or people who like unique art.
There isn't a lot to do, its mainly target practice or shooting things that dont shoot back - developers seem to care so they will edit it out and make this game better. If you play it, just leave feedback.
I can only reasonably assume it`s long since been abandoned as there`s just no content here. Graphics and music show some promise but there`s no single player gameplay at all and the Traing and Target Practice levels will take you less than a minute before you realise there`s just nothing for you to do. Apparently multiplayer might function but I wouldn`t buy it find out. This is an empty shell waiting for the gameplay and levels to be added and considering how long it`s been on Steam it`s not likely to ever happen. No, of course I don`t recommend it.
Even in early access as an unfinished product, Mayhem ZX definitely provides an enjoyable local multiplayer battle arena type experience. Being a gamer and a parent, I always keep an eye out for titles with local co-op that I can enjoy with both the wife, and my kids without breaking the bank. This is a game that works if you only have 10 minutes to spare, or an hour. Pick a character, a gun, a grenade and start fighting. Old school styling and character design Brought back memories of days in my youth of playing street fighter on sega genesis with my friends after school, yelling at the tv and having fun. Being able to utilize walls as a surface to jump on, makes for more frantic gunfights and chaos but ive found walljumping to be a little finicky. Maybe its just me though. Charcter and gadget selection isnt huge but its early access...so yeah, cant say its a negative really. Biggest downside for me was the lack of single player options, at the moment. Would love to see something like a single player/cooperative battle against waves of AI enemies with bosses every so many waves or something. That would add a lot to replayability factor. or a campaign of some sort. But all in all, for a game in early access, my expectations were of a fun, easy to learn local multiplayer game the whole family can enjoy, and it met it. I look forward to seeing how it pans out as more is added to the game. As it plays right now though, if you short on people to get your local multiplayer on with, I'd wait for some more single player material to be added before giving it a go. But if youve got some roomies or kids at home to duke it out with, its worth taking a look. PS!! Get/use a controller. Maybe I just suck with a mouse and keyboard but playing this type of game without a controller was not an easy experience haha Plugging in the xbox controller sorted it right out.
First off, this game has great potential regardless of it's early access designation. The art shown in this game is both unique and painstakingly beautiful - it makes me think of the Toxic Avenger meets Contra. From a gameplay perspective, there seems to be quite a bit of room for growth and expansion - the developers appear to be devoting much of their time to the game's foundation and initial mechanics before diving into the major plot and comprehensive milestones. There are both single player, and multiplayer options; this game can be played with a controller, or a keyboard and mouse if desired. The controls are quite responsive and are quite comfortable. The game's soundtrack is done really well, and doesn't feel repetitive or hashed together, it feels like a lot of effort was put into this area of the experience. There are a ton of characters to choose from, the weapons array is quite good, and the multitude of supported playstyles could be endless. There are even more characters, guns, bombs, traps, and levels in the menus that appear to be in the development stages. I give this game 9 Altoids out of 10, and reccomend it to anyone looking for a fun experience. - Toilet Hooch Randy
