It's a hard recommendation; the overall mixed rating is quite fair. Limited to the visual aspect, it's a masterpiece: even so many years after its original release, I'm still impressed by the pixel art, looking like something out of the golden years of the Amiga and Mega Drive, including a CRT effect. There is a wide variety of enemy sprites, all finely detailed and animated, and the protagonist presents subtle details like looking back or stumbling from time to time. The special attacks, some filling half of the screen, are also great to look at, and while mostly static, most bosses are fairly impressive as well. Really, I can't stop staring at all the small details, like the specific animations for damage from fire or falling into a bottomless pit, or the map screen that also anticipates you will see a nice variety of backgrounds as well, also not all in a single run as some levels have got two exits. The gameplay, however, is another story. Even if it was a passion project, I recall the developer admitting he's more of an artist than a maker of games, and I'd say it shows. Level design is quite simple, as stages are developed only horizontally, and there are several really frustrating pixel-perfect jumps when you least expect them. One of the final stages has got a small platform added in an update because it was realized the jump there was almost impossible. Biggest design oversight is not so much that the character is defenseless by default and must collect the sword attack as a power-up; it's the fact that such a sword is not present in all stages. In fact, you may find yourself going for two or three stages without finding one, forced to only avoid enemies, while some of them have hitboxes that may even force taking damage to pass them. In the end, I decided to go for an upvote with reservations thanks to the stages being short, which compensates for the frustrating elements, a level select unlocked after completing the game that allows to easily see unexplored levels without having to redo the whole game, the low price (I've seen much worse games asking much more) and last but not least an ending that may feel edgy at first but, when you think for a moment about it, makes a lot of sense.
I am 32 years old. My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old. When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing. Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side. With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happiness of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay. After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like. Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends. Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together. Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that. Thank you.
Beat this one the other week with 100% achievements! Worth the while with nice graphics and music, to go along with the gameplay of varied challenging levels, bosses, and worlds! The jumping can be a little short range jank, so you really need to check your footing before executing most of the platforms.. Gamepad highly recommended. I personally used a xbox one controller, nice and responsive. Hint for jumping; (You can hold down jump while attempting a gap to make sure you get it down correctly! Your feet will look like they'll miss most the time but theres chance for a recovery backing it up with a second jump).
Итог: Mastema: Out of Hell — это крепкий оммаж классике 90-х.

The game looks better in steam preview video, the actual game play tells otherwise. Definitely game from MS.DOS gen, i mean MS.DOS 3.0 The controls are not smooth, especially on the jump, and its not fun. I not sure why i need to collect the diamond, and when you are death, you lost everything you collected, you can't hit any mob at all!!! Sorry, gonna refund you with poor graphic, control and game reset rules, even you cost less than a penny Rating: 5 /100 ~ DIFFICULTY ~ 🔲 My 90 year old grandma could play it 🔲 Easy 🔲 Normal ✅ Hard due to bad control 🔲 Terrible ~ GRAPHICS ~ // No full screen ✅ Bad/Terrible (dos quality) 🔲 Meh (windows95 quality) 🔲 Graphics don't matter in this game 🔲 Good 🔲 Beautiful 🔲 Masterpiece ~ MUSIC ~ ✅ Bad, repeating midi 🔲 Not special 🔲 Good 🔲 Beautiful ~ STORY ~ ✅ I have no idea what I am doing 🔲 Brainless moving 🔲 It's there for the people who want it 🔲 Well written 🔲 Epic story ~ PRICE ~ 🔲 Free 🔲 Under-priced 🔲 Perfect Price 🔲 Could be cheaper 🔲 Overpriced ✅ Complete waste of money ~ REQUIREMENTS ~ ✅ You should able to run on 486 PC 🔲 Potatoes, running just on Ryzen3 3200G (APU) 🔲 Average 🔲 High end 🔲 NASA computer ~ LENGTH ~ ✅ Extremely Short (0-2 hours) as you will probably give up. 🔲 Very Short (0 - 2 hours) 🔲 Short (2 - 15 hours) 🔲 Average (15-50 hours) 🔲 Long (50-90 hours) 🔲 Extremely long (90-110 hours) 🔲 No ending ~ FUN ~ 🔲 I'd rather go study ✅ Hard to enjoy 🔲 Repetitive 🔲 Actually pretty amusing 🔲 The kind of fun you'll remember 🔲 Ride of your life ~ REPLAYABILITY~ ✅ It's a one-time experience 🔲 Only for achievements 🔲 If you wait a few months/years 🔲 Definitely 🔲 Infinitely replayable ~ WORTH BUYING ~ ✅ Big NO, not worth even for 90% sale 🔲 No 🔲 Maybe when it is 90% sale and you have no money to spend 🔲 Wait for 70+% sale 🔲 Yes
I absolutely love this game. Beautiful graphics, great soundtrack. Ive seen a lot of reviews complaining about the controls, but they are absolutely fine, so I imagine that must've been an issue that is now fixed.
