Erinnerungen an “Gabriel Knight 2 - The Beast Within” sind vollkommen beabsichtigt. I played the game after the June 2024 update so my comments are based on this version. I really enjoyed the game and would love to see another adventure for our two Shadow Hunters. I love FMV games in general so I am forgiving of the genre. However, I do think this is a good game and it is easy to see the love and care put into it. The story is an homage to the Gabriel Knight lore of the Shadow Hunters and has many nods to other classic adventure games scattered throughout. There is a real game here with inventory, some puzzles and exploration / investigation besides the dialogue. It was nice to have a task list to help keep on track. The story kept my interest and the acting was good for the genre. It was both serious and funny at times and the love story between Markus and Ludwig was sweet. I had 8 hours of play time which is also very solid for a FMV game. There are both auto and manual saves. It was quite the ambitious endeavor and I think the team succeeded in making a fun adventure game that should appeal to adventure fans as well as FMV ones.
As a massive Gabriel Knight fan, I at first had a chuckle when I heard of this game. It's so obvious that it's a fan game. But I've also been missing those games for decades, so I knew I had to play it anyway. Well, turns out it's good on its own. Though not without its bugs and navigation issues, the game features interesting characters, locations, and mechanics. It also distances itself from GK in a lot of ways, particularly with the antagonists. While in GK the 'shadows' can be any sort of supernatural beast, in Markus Ritter they are more like a species of body snatchers. Overall, an enjoyable experience. Hopefully we see more.
If you think you get anything close to a Gabriel Knight adventure, you don't. The only resembelance is the main character being a shadow hunter (through a troubled family). First of all if you want to get more background story, play Markus Ritter - The Lost Family first, which is an ever shorter (but free) then this, but kind of annoying (most of the game consists of taking photographs). There are several quirks that could easily be fixed like typo's, the short fmv loops making the characters look weird when you are looking at the screen for a minute. But my biggest gripe is there just aren't (m)any puzzles, atleast none that will make you think, as the puzzles that are, are pretty straightforward and on top of that a flimsy (murder) storyline. 5/10.
Just finished playing Markus Ritter - Ghosts of the Past. What can I say? I binged this game. Absolutely love it and am actually a little sad it is over now. The story is capturing - with some tiny and very delightful elements of cringe and some great humour. If you have played the demo of this game, the full version is even better - the demo ended before the proper story really started, so I recommend, definitely give the game a go. I hope there'll be a third part to the Markus Ritter games. Couldn't recommend this game highly enough. It deserves a lot more attention.
Einfach toll! Kuss auf all eure Nüsse :*
It is essentially Gabriel Knight fan-fiction, with loads of LGBTQ+ representation. What's not to like?
As a huge fan of FMV games, I jumped at the chance to become a Kickstarter backer for Ghosts of the Past after really enjoying The Lost Family. I wasn’t disappointed – this release has become one of my favourite results from a crowdfunding project. While the storyline is quite serious, Ghosts of the Past has a dry sense of humour running throughout it which had us laughing at times. Adventure gamers will notice the Gabriel Knight influences and happily recognise the references to the classics. Unlike recent FMV games which seem to focus on choice and consequence, this plays more like a point-and-click. The puzzles aren’t particularly challenging but they’re enjoyable and don’t outstay their welcome. Seeing how Markus’s character has grown between the first and second game was a treat. He starts off as someone who’s drifting along without direction, and he now has it after delving into his family’s history. I won’t say too much for fear of spoiling it, but the end of Ghosts of the Past sets him up to develop further and show a stronger side to his personality. On that note, well done to the cast of actors! FMV games tend to be over-the-top and, although there are some appropriately campy moments here, everyone does an excellent job of making their characters believable. I wasn’t fond of Ro at the beginning, but after she drops her guard, you can see why she’s a great counterpart for Markus. If there’s ever a Kickstarter campaign for a third Markus Ritter instalment, sign me up already.
