👑 Powered by HoI 4 Deu Curators group in German / English 👑

Follow Main group
Follow Second group
English: ---------------------------------------> Mare by Visiontrick is a point and click adventure game that has now made its way from the Quest to the PCVR platform. After a confusing intro that explains everything and nothing, Mare transports us into its wonderfully designed game world without any further explanations about the why, how and wherefore. It quickly becomes clear that we embody a kind of mechanical bird that can exert some kind of electrical force. This allows us to interact with certain objects in order to progress. Soon we meet a little girl who becomes our companion. Basically, we will show her the way so that she opens up a similar one for us. So our two protagonists set off on their journey. Just as lost as the player and without knowing where they come from or where the adventure will take them. To play, we only need a controller, as it is a point & click game there are no other interactivities than clicking on certain objects. We can move from one beautifully decorated landing pole to the next. The bird then flies off from the third-person perspective. So it's more like a hidden teleportation, because there is no free bird flight. In the scenes where the bird flies, we can turn by snapturn. The girl then tries to follow the bird and traverses the twisting terrain, opening doors so that we can eventually fly on to the next scenario. The puzzles are all quite simple and easy to figure out. Basically, they are all simple pathfinding puzzles with a few options. In any case, these little puzzles never present an overly complex challenge to a normal player. The aim of the game is clearly for us to enjoy Mare at our leisure. Mare's scenes are softly drawn low-poly landscapes with winding buildings with lots of stairs and passages, bridges and dead ends. However, our little companion could have used a little more detail for the PC version. The animations of our bird and also of the little girl are fluid and lovingly done. The language, which is not always synchronised to the lips, seems to be a fantasy language. The music is chilling and fitting to the landscapes in Mare. Unfortunately, these hardly change and the lack of variety in landscape and puzzles does diminish the enjoyment of Mare somewhat. Which is not to say that it doesn't look great and is fun. Mare is therefore not a game for everyone. Rather for quiet chillers. It is a beautiful journey that unfortunately lacks emotional moments. In the sale you can certainly take a look. 👀Proper round tripson my curator page. 👑 Powered by HoI 4 Deu Curators group in German / English 👑

Follow Main group
Follow Second group
A modern VR take on the point and click genre where you - a mechanical bird - indirectly guides a little girl through a mysterious and serene world. - Beautiful stylized visuals that is perfectly matched with a soothing ambient soundtrack. - Interesting, albeit lightweight, gameplay where you can take your time progressing through the world and solving the puzzles without much stress. - Story is also on the lighter side but fits well with the whole mysterious experience. - A handful of hidden collectibles forcing you to explore the world further in order to unlock the hidden ending. Would totally recommend to anyone looking for a relaxed and soothing adventure where you can soak up the visual and the ambient tunes wile playing at your own pace.
I really did want to love this game and did not want to leave a negative review as I know how hard it must have been for this small studio to put together a VR game for the first time. But in the end I could not deny that this game simply was neither fun nor relaxing for me. There are several places in the puzzle where the game forces you to enact child endangerment to progress. I love wordless games like Paper Beast which had some phenomenally innovative gameplay for VR. Sadly, this game while pretty in some environments simply lacks engaging game play. The primary mechanic of pointing and clicking to electrify things to travel wears on you while you wait for the little girl to catch up with you. Even with the good animation, the little girl has some immersion breakers. She says a small handful of same phrases over and over, even right after when something harrowing has just happened. Lastly there are too many similar looking environments for such a short game, the beige high rise ruins which ends up feeling just too samey and can tire out your eyes. A lot of people mentioned Ico but this game has more in common with Vane and hence suffers from some of the same problems as Vane where the environment is beautiful but the gameplay is lackluster and tedious. For those who enjoyed Mare, they might look at Vane(nonVR) where you do get a chance to actually fly as a crow. The visuals in Vane are an uplifted version of Mare.
Atmospheric adventure with great art style and obscure story. Gameplay had no reason to be in VR, but beautiful environments definitely benefited from it a lot. Despite its Quest origins and low polygon count Mare looks amazing, thanks to great level architecture. This thing looks like something straight up from those worrying dreams with giant ruined buildings and endless stairs without handrails. And through this labyrinth you will have to guide a little child, which looks completely alien here and makes it even more surreal and somewhat unsettling. This weird atmosphere is what kept me hooked despite game's extremely slow pacing, easy puzzles and almost entirely point-and-click gameplay. However it was not enough to make me go for 100% collectibles and see the secret ending. The story is conveyed without words and it is very obscure. Even after finishing the game and watching "true" ending on Youtube, I have no idea what was it really about in terms of metaphors and literal meaning.
TLDR: game was worth the time spent to play through it. Longtime gamer but very new to the VR space. This is one of the few games I've played so far and all in all I liked it. I will say that I got my copy from a bundle, so didn't pay nearly anywhere close to full price. But I've also noticed that VR games tend to be a little more expensive so I couldn't say if this was worth it for anyone who paid in full but i definitely got my money worth. The game itself, is more of an "experience" than a game which is where the negative reviews stem from. Game play is light, but the world you traverse is beautiful in VR. There are also light puzzles and collectibles to find along the way. Honestly, at first the collectables didn't interest me but when I realized they unlocked the true ending I was glad that I went back. The game also makes it easy to jump into the middle of any level to back track and find the collectables you missed and honesty I'm glad I did because it uses more of the "finesse" of guiding your companion through the world and getting them made me appreciate the mechanics alot more. It made the game much more "playable" and added a bit of challenge to it and felt less like clicking though a story. As for the story, not 100% sure I got everything on this one but I've become a big fan of games that can tell a great story with no dialogue. Games like Omno, FAR Lone Sails and it's sequel all do this beautifully. Mare is compelling enough to want to try and figure out what's going on but also leaves a lot of my questions unanswered.. in the end. All in all, works extremely well in VR (using Quest 2) happy to have spent my time and money on this one.

If you like ICO or The Last guardian. Really recommend.
