About

Exorcise the infernal and exact vengeance in this unholy roguelite deckbuilder from David Gaider and Summerfall Studios. The city teems with demons and among them lies your prey: Malys, a demon of extraordinary cunning and power.
As you pick your path through the city, you’ll encounter its denizens - some friendly, some not so much, and some possessed by demons that you’ll need to exorcise. Use your deck to expose the rot within. Find unique combinations and strategies to withstand the miseries. Help the hopeless and free the possessed, or die in the attempt… over and over again.
As Noah, former priest turned exorcist and demon hunter, you’re armed with your faith and a variety of tools ranging from the holy to the dark and arcane… but you’ll need much more for this hunt, and there will be precious few allies to provide them.
Written by David Gaider (former BioWare Lead Writer on the Dragon Age series and Creative Director on Summerfall’s own Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical), Malys is our unholy roguelite deckbuilder, with a beautifully hand-illustrated style.

Your cards reflect your actions - invoking holy and ancient powers through prayer and chanting, or equipment like holy water and purified salt. In order to play cards, you must burn cards first to light candles - making every hand a series of strategic decisions and sacrifices.
Succeed at exorcisms and receive a reward of Faith, a currency you can spend along your path. Use it to add, upgrade or remove cards, heal your Will, or buy Curios, run-long passive effects that add both power and different ways to play.
Improve your strategy and chance of success. Fail, die, and try again.

In an exorcism, your candles will light the way. You'll encounter a possessed host, desperate for your help. Burn cards in your hands to light candles, and use their holy power to play the other cards in your hand.
Every hand is a choice: Which cards will you burn and which will you play? Candles are persistent between turns, and become a strategic challenge; will you use all your remaining candles this turn, or preserve some for the next?
Manage your Will, Noah's capacity to endure evil. Completing an exorcism does not restore your Will, and you'll need to decide what sacrifices to make and what paths to take in order to succeed. Run out of Will and your night comes to an end.

Demons hide within their hosts to maintain their power, and the first step to wrestling that power away from more powerful demons is to reveal their True Name. You’ll need to Expose these demons in order to gain the upper hand and begin to take control of the exorcism.

Now revealed and threatened, you must Endure the full measure of the demon’s wrath. Use every part of your arsenal to destroy its Will while protecting your own. Fail, and lose yourself and the host to darkness.

Once weakened, the time comes to Expel the demon for good.
But beware — a desperate demon may draw on the life force of its host to power its most terrible abilities: protect the host or all is lost.

In Malys, death is not the end. Start the night over from the beginning, with only Noah and a select few aware of the horrors that have occurred. Noah must begin his hunt again.

- Negative until the crashes are fixed, the devs don't seem to care about addressing them + Nothing, as the game keeps crashing during the final boss fight, making it impossible to finish without losing progress
I cannot recommend this game, although I wanted to like it due to the theme and atmosphere. Here's why: Major: 1) The game has too many options for what can be done with a deck making it difficult to get good synergy with mechanics. It feels like the project started overly ambitious and too much was added that never got trimmed down with balancing. 2) In spite of point 1 the game is very easy to win once you understand a few things, the primary being that since cards are the energy source anything, that draws cards is often paying for itself coupled with miracle cards that are free when you draw them after your turn begins. 3) Even knowing how to win every fight with no real risk the fights are very long meaning its boring due to the lack of pressure and also because it takes so long to end. 4) Despite the fights being so long the game is very short. I beat it twice in my 15 hours of playtime. There is a hidden Steam achievement still so there probably is another story bit to uncover but I'd rather not. 5) The game crashed 3 or 4 times during my playtime for seemingly no reason which is pretty annoying after investing so many rounds into a boring fight then being forced to do it all over again. Nit-picky: 1) The story snippets before each fight are cool at first but being presented with 2 pages of text you have already ready for the fifth time feels bad. The story itself was mediocre in my opinion with the plot twists feeling cookie cutter. 2) The UI is bad. It is very frequently the case that clicking on a reward directly on the box multiple times does not register the selection which is sloppy programming. Also when being presented with card rewards their upgrades should be viewable since they often dramatically change how valuable a card is.

Premises solid, gameplay solid, artwork just great but sadly it feels quit unbalanced, too much RNG. Haven't been able to reach the last boss. Perhaps skill issue but I like to play games with a good balance in playable instead of outright hard mode. Or to be delivered to the whims of the RNG gods. Luckily the game was cheap. Won't play anymore.
I wouldn't recommend the game; I went by the reviews, but it's really not good. Game balance is practically non-existent—it's basically a matter of chance right from the start of a fight. You have to discard cards—which are often useless anyway—just to play others; it's stupid. It’s the same with the mechanics: a card might cost 3 AP (or "candles"), but sacrificing it only generates 1. The enemies are fine until you hit an elite; that’s where the balance falls apart because everything is left to luck—either your deck can kill it or it can't. You can tell within the first few hands that you have a 90% chance of losing. I played about 7 runs and only managed to beat an elite once. The elite that appears is random—it doesn't take your starting deck or odds into account at all; it's just a "can you do it or not" situation. There doesn't seem to be any progression—though I haven't played enough to be sure—and retrying isn't satisfying. Each fight takes about as long as a *Slay the Spire* battle but lacks any balance. It's a shame, really; the art is great—dark comic-book style—and the atmosphere is suitably gloomy, but I can't recommend the game as it stands. Maybe patches will fix it.
A very interesting attempt to bring a complex, engaging narrative to a genre - roguelike deckbuilders - that doesn't generally have a lot of narrative to it. I don't know that it's wholly successful, either as a narrative or as a deckbuilder - in other words, it's neither Hades (still the standard-bearer for grafting narrative onto a roguelike's 'try, try again' structure) nor Slay The Spire (the standard-bearer for deckbuilders, still) - but the fact that it's even attempting to challenge both at once, and not falling flat on its face in either endeavor, says a lot about both its ambition and its successes. At the end of the day, I find the moment-to-moment gameplay fulfilling, its characters and art style compelling, and its narrative engaging - it's hard to offer a stronger recommendation than that, I think, even if it's not necessarily blowing the doors of of anything in its approach. Edited to add: It's also the rare roguelike deckbuilder that actually has difficulty options, which I appreciate... even if I didn't notice they existed until AFTER my first successful run. (The devs could definitely stand to make those 'pop' a little bit more, I think.)
I'm confused by the end. Is it the end? I don't know, and it seems no one on the internet knows as well, this game is quite obscure.
fun twist on the roguelike deckbuilder, i am a big fan. has a few bugs, but nothing catastrophic. i recommend this to anyone who is a fan of the genre.
Yeah, I'm enjoying this. I've never played a deck-builder before, but I really enjoyed the previous game from this studio and was nicely eased into the idea of this game through their kickstarter logs. I think it's pretty accessible for people who don't normally play this type of game; I don't know how it holds up to the rest of the genre. But I find it addicting and have stayed up too late on multiple runs just wanting to push one more encounter, one more exorcism, try just grabbing one more card. The story is presented with some lovely prose, but the narrative isn't the strongest part of the experience for those who just care about the gameplay. While I predicted the first major plot twist several hours in, it still felt good seeing that I was right, and I'm now curious about the (maybe?) multiple endings. All in all, a good time. I've enjoyed the 22 hours so far and am looking forward to more. Edit: post-completion, I actually felt like the last stretch of the game passed *too* quickly. But overall, it was really fun. Also, hearing Montaigne every time I booted the game up was just. Wonderful. Happy to have supported this game from its Kickstarter efforts (which failed, so I did not receive the game for free; I just bought it on a Steam sale). Well worth it.
