Maid For My Master

Maid For My Master is, in many ways, a very typical ebi-hime title. The writing style is unmistakably hers, the romance follows her usual beats, and the format is once again a kinetic novel—no choices—taking around 4–5 hours to complete. As expected, it’s a mostly calm and wholesome romance story with a touch of drama near the end. That said, the “drama” is quite mild and mostly feels like an overreaction from the MC rather than a real emotional conflict. Story-wise, it’s centered around a romance with an android, which is an interesting concept. However, the sci-fi angle isn’t explored deeply enough. If Holly—the android maid—were just a regular human, the story wouldn’t change much. The robot aspect is present but shallowly implemented, and sometimes even inconsistent. For instance: [list] [*]She supposedly can feel the texture of clothing but not pain or cold? [*]She’s described as heavy and made of steel, yet is able to ride the MC during sex with no issue? [*]She can eat, but what happens with the food? [/list] These are all small but potentially fascinating details that could have made the story far more engaging and grounded in its premise. As it stands, the android aspect feels more like window dressing for a typical romance story rather than a core element. Another strange narrative choice is how Holly ends up with the MC. Her former owner—who spent a lot of money on her—fires her and simply abandons her on the street instead of reselling or repurposing her. It makes little logical sense and weakens the story's believability. There’s also the repeated mention that her skin is made of steel, which doesn’t align with how she’s described and how she looks. Despite these issues, I still enjoyed reading it. Ebi-hime’s strengths in character chemistry and emotional subtlety are still here, even if this isn’t her most impressive outing. On the production side, the art and music are pleasant and well-done, as usual. There are two sex scenes available via optional DLC, but they’re not animated, just a few CG stills—nice to have, but not essential. Overall, this is a decent romance VN with classic ebi-hime storytelling. If you enjoy her previous works, you’ll likely enjoy this too. However, due to the underdeveloped android/robot elements and some logic issues, I’d place this as a middle-of-the-pack release in her library. You take on the role of Asahi, a young man in his early 20's who's working part time at a convenience store in Tokyo. Asahi barely makes enough to get on by, and he has to deal with a surly co-worker and the difficult conditions of living in a big city, as he had only known life in the countryside. As Asahi is walking back to his apartment after his work shift, he meets Holly, who's handing out fliers for a cafe where she works. However, here's the catch. Holly is a robot maid that's programmed to serve humans. Still, she's quite unique in that she behaves in ways that end up getting her fired from the cafe. Feeling guilty that Asahi was the cause, he insists that Holly stay with him, and she agrees. Thus, their relationship begins, going from friends to eventually a couple. Of course, certain obstacles are presented before them but nothing that they can't overcome together. ^^ As for the gameplay, the story is linear, so there are no choices whatsoever. Four chapters and an epilogue are present, and you play through the story from beginning to end. Several lovely CGs are shown and a varied soundtrack is included but no voice acting. Also, there are several Steam achievements, but they won't count towards a user's global total until the game is out of "Steam is learning about this game". [h2]Review[/h2] I always get excited whenever I see any of ebi-hime's visual novels here on Steam. (It's quite amazing how many she releases in a year. :o) Of course, I was excited to get around to playing [i]Maid For My Master[/i]. The story is very cute and sweet. Asahi is pretty much your typical male protagonist that's present in Japanese VNs. He's ordinary and down on his luck, trying to make ends meet in a big city while dealing with rude people. It's when he has his initial encounter with Holly that events start taking a turn. It was very hilarious to see Holly come to Asahi's aid when she throws Asahi's aggressor out of the cafe window and afterwards, calmly and rationally explain the situation to her employer. XD Although this action results in Holly getting fired, it pushes her and Asahi to spend time together and to get to know one another. I enjoyed witnessing their relationship grow and evolve. Asahi treats Holly as a woman, despite that Holly continually reminds him that she's a robot. Holly goes from simply fulfilling her duty to serve humans to considering her wishes, and that's all thanks to Asahi. Their relationship even gets to the point where it becomes romantic, and it feels natural. (I'll briefly note that even though I played without the adult patch, I could tell that the patch includes a sex scene between Asahi and Holly.) As for the writing, it's very well paced. The story is more of a slice-of-life, albeit with robots becoming more mainstream in society. (Still, Holly is quite advanced for a robot.) It never feels like the story gets boring or too slowed down at any point. There's a good balance between the slower moments and the more exciting, funny, and/or dramatic ones. I noticed only a couple of typos, which I assume will be fixed in a future update. All Steam achievements unlocked for me without any problems. Regarding the art, the sprites are done in a typical anime style, which I tend to like in visual novels, and the backgrounds are drawn and colored well, too. Most of the backgrounds are original although there may be one or two that are familiar if you've played some of ebi-hime's previous VNs. While some have that happy, upbeat tone, others are slightly more somber and melancholy. The tracks fit perfectly with the scenes they're placed in, really immersing you in the story. No voice acting is present, but it isn't needed to enjoy this story, and I preferred to take my time reading the text and picturing what I thought would make for great voices for the characters. If you're looking for a cute, sweet romance with a love between a human and a robot that can overcome obstacles, you especially enjoy ebi-hime's visual novels, and/or you want easily obtainable Steam achievements, then this is definitely worth checking out. It was such a great read, and I'm happy that Asahi and Holly get their happily ever after, which is a bit predictable but nevertheless, a sweet ending. For the asking price, I think it's worth it, as it is one of ebi-hime's newer VNs. Of course, you can choose to wait for a sale, and it's in a Steam bundle. A gentle romantic visual novel featuring a hardworking young man and a kind-hearted maid. As the story progresses, subtle mysteries surrounding the maid's past are revealed, adding emotional depth to the linear narrative. The anime-style graphics are incredibly cute, and the dialogue is both thoughtful and humorous, making it highly enjoyable. This is a kinetic novel format with no choices, and reading time is approximately 3–4 hours. While it is a pure love story, it also includes H scenes (two in total), balancing both healing and cuteness. As a 'maid lover', this visual novel caught my attention. As a 'gynoid enthusiast', it made me curious. Having a cute gynoid maid as the heroine, I couldn't resist. The game demanded to be played. This is my first ebi-hime title, and I must say I enjoyed it very much. The story is cute, the characters are a delight, the soundtrack is fun, and the optional H scenes are tastefully done. 10 out of 10, would let Holly top me again! The visual novel was made with Ren'Py, so I, being visually impaired, used the self-voicing accessibility feature. I found some buttons without alternative text and reported it to the developer. Hopefully, that will be fixed soon. Also, although the game's info doesn't say so, using gamepads is supported. I played with a DualSense PS5 controller and everything worked as it should. I enjoyed the focus the plot gave Asahi's (the point-of-view character) conflict with stereotypical masculinity. At various points of the story, he tries (and mostly fails) to act in a classical 'manly' or 'gentlemanly' manner towards Holly with the intention of impressing her, which makes a brilliant contrast when she's actually receptive in the momentswhen he actually does nice things for her, not because 'he is a bloke and she is a girl', but because it's the right thing to do or because he does care about her, which reflect my own views on such behaviour. Holly is, unlike what you might expect, not a 'submissive' heroine. She might be a maid, a gynoid, and have been programmed to be subservient, but she's not passive. She acts with initiative, she is physically strong, and she has her own wants and desires, the latter of which she pursues actively. Also, as the cherry on top, she gives off 'gentle mummy' vibes, which is very much in evidence after the date at the zoo and onwards, specially in the first H scene and its aftermath. Nazuna, Asahi's coworker, is an entertaining tsundere. She's sassy, surprisingly knowledgeable, sometimes a ♥♥♥♥♥, but she actually cares. She's the type of friend who berates you for waking her up at 2:00 AM while the both of you are getting rid of a body. Her last scene made me want to know more about her and her life story. Actually, that's my only real complaint about this game. I want MORE!! I want to know more about Asahi's and Holly's life together, I want to know more about the world where they live, I want to know how Nazuna made Antoine, I want mummy Holly to top me gently!! Anyway... I enjoyed immensely Maid For My Master, I bought a couple of the other games from ebi-hime. If they're as good as this one, I'll be glad to be called an 'ebi-hime stan'!

A cozy, calming story. My favorite robot maid story is Me & Roboco, but this is a different genre and stands on its own. Calling it second place would be misleading.

Ignore the playtime: I originally bought this on itch, then purchased it again on Steam to help out with the algo. The actual length is more like 4 hours. Speaking of, here's what I said over there: "This was really sweet, and I liked how capable Holly was despite what one might expect from the whole maid framing (not that I was surprised myself having read your other work, but still). Also the soundtrack was a nice treat, I was not expecting the 90s-style music but it was really good." Finally, just since the store page doesn't mention it, I really appreciated seeing a short guy in a VN, so if that's something you also like then do check this out.

[i]Maid for my Master[/i] is on the shorter end for an ebi-hime VN, but no less sweet for it - the romance develops in conjunction with the individual growth of the two leads. I found Holly and Asahi's unlikely match with one another to be just absolutely adorable. Both of them bring out the best in each other through their genuine care and wish to make things easier for the other. I was drawn to Holly's character early on by the way that her boss and clients spoke disparagingly about her; it actually brought to mind the way that people speak about trans people (denying their gender and personhood) and autistic people (berating them for misunderstandings when they are doing their best). She resonated with me for both of these reasons, and might do the same for other readers who are autistic, trans, or both. Nazuna is also a fun side character - her abrasiveness hides a cute tsundere inside, hahaha. Asahi's interactions with her and her robot companion, Antoine, do a good job of widening Asahi's world beyond his cute robot girlfriend, giving both him and the world he lives in some more dimension. I've long been of the opinion that ebi-hime does an excellent job introducing side characters whose presence add to the story, and [i]Maid for my Master[/i] is no exception. Most of the scenarios are fairly generic, but I don't think this is a bad thing in the slightest - it's cute slice-of-life story, so some genericism is to be expected, and Holly's robotic nature adds a unique twist to these scenarios. I particularly liked the zoo date (Holly's reactions to the animals are just too cute!) and the sick scenario (what can I say, I'm a sucker for some good caretaking). The base game, while technically considered "safe for work" by Steam's standards, contains enough risque shorts of Holly's tits that I think your boss or parents would have questions if they walked in on it, so do keep that in mind while purchasing/playing. If you're wanting more than merely 'risque', a free r18 patch is available which adds 2 fully illustrated erotic scenes. The art in both versions of the game is excellent, managing to balance cute and sexy very well from scene to scene. Overall, it took me a little over three hours to read the VN in its entirety. If you like androids, I think this VN is well worth a shot; if you don't, you still might consider purchasing it, because the sci-fi elements are very light and there's an absence of complex technical jargon. It's a slice-of-life story first and foremost, and one that I was happy to spend the time with.

If you want to get less lonely on a Christmas day and like robot waifu, then this visual novel is maid for you.
