Hunchback's Dungeon is an unabashed, lazy ripoff of Vampire Survivor (Copyright Poncle Ltd. , 2021). Many lazy "amateur" developers don't pay attention to their obligations under copyright law, and often steal the ideas of actual, real game developers without credit, such as the "developer" here has done. At this stage no legal action has been taken by Poncle Ltd. against the "developer" here, but it's never off the table, as previous copyright law cases have shown. Putting aside the unethical intellectual bankruptcy of stealing someone else's game concept for profit, this is also breaking that unwritten law of stealing other people's game ideas... you should at least try to do better than the game you're ripping off. Hunchback's Dungeon is considerably worse than Vampire Survivor. There's slightly different elements like gear and so on but those mechanisms still fit into the same basic upgrade and progression system that was hamfistedly stolen from Vampire Survivor. There's nothing really new or interesting here, and the game fails to address the worst defect of Vampire Survivor, the crap, phoned in graphics (in fact the graphics here are worse, if such a thing is even possible). The game is still being developed, but development is slow enough that the game appears to be headed to Development Hell. While there's still time before the game reaches the developers committed deadline to complete the game, it's only getting very small updates, the last of which happened back in May 2024. While the developer has indicated work is ongoing, a 5+ month period without any real evidence of progress is cause for alarm. There's no reliable indication the game will ever be completed, which is another reason for gamers to avoid this. It's important to remember that only about 25% of Early Access games ever get completed... the vast majority of Early Access games are abandoned and all money taken from gamers is never refunded. Early Access games are a huge risk and in general should be avoided. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The implementation here is of such poor quality, the developer couldn't work out how to make the game display in fullscreen, it only runs in a window. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. Some of the defects in the game can be attributed to the choice of using the Godot 2D game engine/toolset (the 3D part is actually workable, but it's more complicated so a lot of amateur devs don't know how to use it). The Godot 2D component is a very poor quality toolset sometimes used by amateur developers as it's free (so they don't have to pay for GameMaker Studio) and doesn't require advanced game development skills, but unfortunately has very limited capabilities (it's arguably worse than GameMaker Studio). Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use a terrible engine. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 12 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? Hunchback's Dungeon has the cash grab price of around $4 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam. This is also competing with over 11,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
Literally the only thing you do in this game is move, and they couldn't even get that right. If you hold 'right' and tap 'up', your character stops moving completely. How do you ♥♥♥♥ up the most basic thing possible?
Gonna be honest, not really a fan. But I read through the developers twitter a bit and they are taking criticism and adding things to the game. That's definitely a plus. I've set to not recommended, but this may change in the future. I also have some gameplay footage on my youtube. No, I'm not showing off elite gamer skills, in fact, I'll be honest again, I played really badly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlTLTJ-1NGs So let's start with the negatives: The gameplay gets very repetitive very quickly. You're just using WASD, there's not much variation compared to other games like it. Nordic Ashes had more aiming and a really cool graphic style. As well as boss fights and the shop wasn't just a menu but a place you could actually walk around in. But this doesn't offer that. So what's it doing different from Vampire Survivors? In my opinion, it's doing what VS is doing, but worse. The music is mega repetitive, I get it, early access, maybe you'll add more in time. But right now it's best turned off, else madness ensues! The graphics are extremely basic. Some people like this kinda thing but not for me... It can be difficult to make out that the character even is a hunchback, for instance. The window size is tiny. I could've gone full screen, but I need to do borderless full screen, and this game didn't offer that. There is a program called Borderless windowed gaming that I'd recommend. It's not perfect and doesn't work with every game, but it does with a lot of games.... It however... doesn't work very well with this one, only putting this game in full screen, not borderless windowed. There's no option to change the window size either. Which is weird. There's also no option to change the font or font size. I had issues reading due to both of these things. I'd absolutely recommend different font options. There's a game for mobile called "Grim Quest" (Two more, Grim tides and grim omens) that offers different font options when you start the game. You can have the retro style you chose, but you can also go with different easier to read fonts, some of which still suit the theme of the game. I'd recommend something like that. When you finish a mission, you cannot highlight your stats on the right to see what each of them does. So when you get an item and it says +3 profane magic or whatever, you cannot highlight profane magic to see what that is. (I guess it's a type of magic, the description I was able to access, after closing the loot window and accessing the shop. Just said more damage with it.) Now on to the positives: The dev does take criticism and learn ways to improve his game. Referring to negative reviews as a "gold mine". I hope mine is at least helpful, despite being negative toward the game. ^_^ The options are really good, you can really change a lot with the game. Like reducing shop prices or the amount of things on the screen at once. You can even decrease or even increase enemy health and damage. That's pretty awesome. Not just a flat easy normal hard, but you choose what difficulties you want. Maybe you hate bullet sponges, but want the enemies to hit like trains. You can choose that. And I respect that choice, that's awesome. It's cheap. Cheap often carries a negative connotation, but I mean this in a good way. The game isn't very expensive. Which for what it is, is fair. It's set to a fair price. The dev isn't asking for a fortune and again, I can respect that. I wasn't a fan of the game, but it's not like it cost me much to try it. So based on that I say... give it a go for yourself. Maybe you'll dislike it too. But the best way to find out is to play it yourself. I died mega early because I wanted to keep the video short. But for all I know, the game opens up more as you progress further. There were other characters on the selection screen, maybe you unlock a character that makes the game more fun and unique to play. I will say that I doubt it. the two characters that exist didn't have any lore or anything. They were just kinda there with different stats. Which is fine.... Not really sure why Quasimodo is exploring this dungeon, but he's there, I guess. I choose whether to recommend this game based on whether or not I'd actually go to a friend and say "Oh, you should try this out, it's really cool!" and as it is, I'm unlikely to do that with this. There are other games like this, that do a better job of making them unique and interesting. This game doesn't have a lot to offer currently. It is early access and the dev does seem to be able to listen to criticism. So that's a huge plus. Maybe some day I'll give this game another try. If you play it, I hope you enjoy it more than I did. If you don't play it based on my review, that's fair, I'm glad I was able to help. Regardless, I hope you have a great day. ^_^ Thank you for reading my review... or skipping to the end, that's cool too.
Hunchback's Dungeon is very similar to Brotato, which is a compliment coming from me. If you like one of these games, I can't see you disliking the other, but there are some significant differences. Besides the obvious aesthetic shift, Hunchback's Dungeon is also relatively easy with most characters and has stats with negative values often apply the inverse of their normal effects. This is most prominent with the life-leech stat, dubbed Vampirism, which counterbalances itself by reducing other sources of healing. For those unfamiliar with the genre, it's a variant of "Survivors-like" with 20 "waves" of enemies to survive before a run is considered one, broken up with stops at a shop for purchases of finite but flexible item and weapon options. This structure features the notable difference of having no direct metaprogression, with achievements and XP unlocking new items to find in runs, all of which will be beneficial to someone, but few of which are never a bad choice. To offer a different comparison, if you would like to put more thought into a game like Vampire Survivors or Holocure because the characters feel too similar, this is what you're looking for.
This game is an awesome little game loosely based of on another VS like game. Very fun to play, and thankfully it has controller support :) To the loser who thinks this is a soulless Vampire Survivors close, it's not you idiot, it's a soulfull Brotato-like, and it is pretty excelent in everything it does, from style to gameplay >:(
I reported some achievements not working nearly half a year ago, but the developer still hasn’t fixed them. It feels like this game is stuck in Early Access forever. Don’t bother playing it.
There is a lot to unlock and collect in this one. it's less visually overwhelming than vampire survivors which is a huge plus for me. You can only have 4 weapons all going up to tier 4 currently. Also you can change them whenever you want! Also you can stack a ton of misc effect and buff items. Easy recommend and i haven't even touched the new level yet.
I gave this game a fair chance, even completed all the milestones, but it consistently under-delivers where it could have done well. It's also completely bugged. For example; - Almost all the items are good-bad meaning i get +2 of this but -2 of that, but there's not enough variation in the items to diversify the losses. making it so if i want attack speed i'm basically required to tank my damage or range - Most of the spells are useless un-upgraded making a good starting spell absolutely critical, but half the characters have only one good spell, if that. - half the spells are just different flavors of the same spell. AOE but red, AOE but blue, etc. - The quest system has several of my quests bugged out, saying "kill 50 enemies" at 2300% completion but still never completing the quest or giving the unlock. - The difficulty system is spawning traps on the lowest difficulty even though it explicitly states the lowest difficulty has no traps - Sloth in particular is completely impossible to play as because he has one decent starter spell that can only last him until wave 3 when he gets killed by something that shouldn't have killed him. He has 1 HP and two guaranteed dodges but the spear-men in the first dungeon on the lowest difficulty one shot him through the dodges anyways. In the desert zone he'll die randomly because he'll start a wave taking damage by spawning on a cactus. This game literally feels like rage bait after spending half my play time trying and failing to beat the easiest difficulty (supposedly) with sloth, which you have to do to unlock another character (if that even unlocks)
Very fun! I wish there was a way to turn off screen flash.
