One of the better mahjong solitaire games available. Many games in the genre try to distinguish themselves by including some kind of gimmick, but Mahjong World Contest actually succeeds in making an offering that is novel, and manages to balance what should be a relaxing and meditative game play experience with a challenge that can keep the game fresh and interesting. Rather than trying to clear the entire board by matching every tile, the goal is to clear special gold tiles. This introduces an element of strategy as you must try to remember where all the gold tiles on the table are, and plot how best to gain access to them with the available moves. Furthermore, the game is generous with the ability to reshuffle the board, so if you miss a match or if your strategy is not quite bearing fruit, you can mix up the tiles for a relatively low cost in moves. The boards themselves are not timed, but there is a combo meter that depletes over time. In addition, every board has a goal for being completed within a certain number of moves and with a certain score, so there is more strategy in terms of how many extraneous matches you are willing to allow yourself to make in order to build up your combo and reach a high score. There are a few minor flaws that are worth mentioning. Some of the levels seem rushed and do not flow as well as others. A few of the level goals have simple mistakes that should have been patched out eons ago... one level comes to mind that has two separate "Move" goals... one for the actual number of moves and another for an absurdly high number of moves that far exceeds the available matches on the board. No doubt the second of these was intended to be a score goal but the level was not configured properly. Also of note is that the only way to clear your tile buffer is to choose another tile, you cannot deselect your current tile just by clicking on the table. This is not a flaw per se, but it is a common enough mechanic in other mahjong solitaire games that I frequently found myself making matches I did not intend to make because I thought I had deselected a tile when I hadn't. There is also some minor issues with the game not being able to tell which tile you're trying to click on, a fairly common bug in many of these sorts of games. All in all, if you're a fan of these types of solitaire games I can highly recommend this one. For 5 bucks (full price at time of writing) you get 10-15 hours of game play and 120 unique boards to test your skill against. It will probably be a while before I add yet another solitaire game to my library, but when the time comes I will definitely be considering Mahjong World Contest 2.
