This game has all the nostalgia of a NES platformer down to the game manual. With clever artwork and style that makes you miss game cartridges. The movement mechanics are very reminiscent of the MegaMan series which is perfect. Despite its classic appearance Magentta does add some unique twists for replayability with challenge and speed run modes. Which will have you competing with your friends for best times. Overall this is an enjoyable platformer that scratches a nostalgia itch in a fresh way.
As of version 1.1 - Overall I have had a very positive experience with Magnetta. The game play is solid, the mechanics are easy to learn and the level design is creative and interesting. In true NES-style the game requires some planning and memorization to get through each level. Each stage has taken me about 4-5 tries to truly learn the best way to navigate them. The enemies are also diverse enough to keep the challenge up. Even with these challenging aspects the game is forgiving enough and saves your progress as you complete stages. Each stage also has added replay value as you revisit them to collect circuits or challenge yourself in the glitch-mode. During my time with the game I have come across some very minor bugs and Heliocentric Studios has been incredibly kind and quick to resond. Most reported issues were patched within a few hours. Magnetta is highly recommended for any fan of jumpin' and shootin'! Pros: +Jumpin' & shootin' +Tight controls +Interesting enemies & levels +Multiple challenges/modes +Challenging yet forgiving +Great replay Value Cons: -Soundtrack is a little flat, using the NES style
So it’s 2024 and while all my friends are playing Baldur’s Gate 3 and Helldivers 2 (and probably wondering why I am not) I am playing this Mega Man clone from 2016 (which was popular enough to warrant trading cards, but not enough to be included on howlongtobeat-dot-com) which I can’t even remember how I got turned on to; but I really don’t mind... in fact I prefer it in some ways. Let’s find out why... Now although I called it a Mega Man clone, the appellation is a bit unfair. Yes, it plays very similar, but there are some significant differences (for example, you can shoot while you slide, which is something that you cannot do in Mega Man, and there is no real analogue to the collectable circuit boards). Ignoring some of the basic gameplay elements, as you begin to compare it to Mega Man, you begin to see how it does not hold up: the graphics, sound, and mechanics, while all endearing (it reminds me in a lot of ways of Adventure Time), are not up to par with the quality of the games it is ostensibly trying to mimic. On the one hand, very few things will ever live up to so beloved a series, but on the other hand, one may think that this was just someone’s idea of Mega Man with a “female protagonist” and, if you are misogynistic or cynical enough, you could relegate to the inferior “Girlboss” versions of legacy media that lack depth aside from the gender swap (coughcaptainmarvelahem). But there is one important feature that sets this game apart and proves that this viewpoint is overly reductive: the glitch levels! And now I am about to sound like an old geezer but back in the day, when videogames were cartridges, if the connecter pins on the base of the game pack did not make full contact with the those of the console, the game would usually still play but the sprites and tiles of the game would be all wonky (at least this is what happened with the NES). Everything would look different and unstable, making it a challenge to try to play the game normally. Some of us kids would take up the challenge, attempting to get as far as we can while the game is glitched, often relying on our memories of the game while playing as the manufacturer intended, hoping that if the game locked up it would only be temporary, and ever ready to nudge the cartridge if it wasn’t. I have very vivid memories of playing the original Super Mario Brothers (a game I wasted my childhood on) with the glitchy goombas looking like a stack of pancakes. So when I saw the glitch levels in Magnetta... well, I have a feeling this was why I put it on my wishlist to begin with and actually playing them transported me across the space-time continuum to my childhood. I imagine the devs may have engaged in these sorts of shenanigans back in the day as well. So what does this prove to me? Ultimately, that this game is a parody, not only of Mega Man in a sense, but also of NES games in general, and the fact that it is a parody in no way diminishes its uniqueness, playability, or style. But do the young bucks get it? Nope! Modern gamers say “glitches bad” and have to be mollycoddled and assured that the glitch levels are not mandatory unless you want the achievement. Yes, I am turning into a geezer as we speak, but the majority of them have no appreciation for the real history of those hip, retro-style games that they obsess about... not that they would understand it anyway. And as for this game that builds on those themes but still has something to say about the legacy of these old games even in a tongue-in-cheek way? Well, it’s relegated to some dark corner of Steam with only a double-digit number of mixed reviews, all within the first year or so of its release, and damn near forgotten. Alas, this game deserves better! It is the best game that you will never play!
Отличнейший клон мегамена Есть недочеты, но в целом очень доставило 9 из 10 Весьма удивлен, что нельзя найти оброзы и прохождения этой игры на ютубе
Good retro action game. Having a great time so far.
I am a huge Mega Man fan, so in theory a Mega Man clone sounds great. This one... isn't. I tried most of the levels, and with the sloppy level design, charmless aesthetics, and most of all the sssssslllllllloooooooooowwwwwwww pace, I just couldn't get into it no matter how hard I tried. I've played plenty of other similar indie games that were much better--the Momodora series, for example, or of course Shovel Knight. I wanted to support this game, but it's just such a lackluster production that I can't even say it was worth the $4.99 sale price. It's not that it's a decent game with lots of flaws; it's just an inherently boring gestalt of a game.
Polished and pristine. Heliocentric Studios, you've brought back fond memories. Huge, unique levels, solid difficulty, nice enemy variety, and unexpectedly forgiving (depending on your difficulty choice). Terrific particle effects and transitional backgrounds. It's the little touches that make me smile; Magnetta's blowing hair, her shimmer, idle interactions. This game will make you think at times, not so much to puzzle, but how to optimize. Power-ups and secrets a-plenty. Glitch-Me-Not! Magnetta, Mega Man...you two are one.
The knock back is absolutely horrendous, as are enemy placements. Throw in the lack of checkpoints after mini bosses, which means you have to refight them again and it all adds up to a game that I refuse to waste more of my time on.
THIS GAME IS a flat LACK OF lustering garbage in a clustering can of SMOKED TURDS
