About
Magical Delicacy is a combat-free Metroidvania-lite with a complex cooking system. Set foot in Grat and get lost while platforming through this twisted town - find and explore open pathways or fulfill the complex orders of the townsfolk to progress and unlock new kitchen tools.
Platforming and exploration lie at the heart of Magical Delicacy and are required to collect ingredients and progress within the game. Toggle the Easy Platforming mode in the settings if you want a more comfortable platforming experience or have trouble with challenging passages.
Play the young witch Flora and discover a bustling town in this Metroidvania-inspired wholesome cooking game. Cook meals and potions in your customized kitchen by carefully selecting the right ingredients. Navigate the town in casual platforming to meet the townsfolk, take up their orders, and learn about this world of magic.
Flora travels to a distant town to fulfill her dream of becoming a proper witch. She opens up shop in Grat, a harbor town built upon cliffs, where adventurers settled to chart an unexplored island full of mystery. As she engages in the town’s thriving economy, she stumbles upon two members of opposing covens. The witch Cassia and the magus Tauno have a lot to teach Flora, but they also know how to use her in their dispute about magical beings.
Visit a beautiful harbor town, a densely packed space with people to meet, history to discover, and many opportunities to improve your business. Shop at merchants to buy various keepsakes and upgrades. Accept dozens of orders from the townsfolk asking for your magical food. Meet mysterious travelers, shop owners, forgotten legends, and masters of their crafts, some of which might only appear during day or night. Unravel long-forgotten secrets of the island and its mystical creatures.
Cooking delicious meals for your customers requires the correct ingredients. Gather ingredients directly within the nooks and crannies of the town, while some other ingredients can only be bought from merchants. Run out of an ingredient while cooking? Don’t worry - merchants will restock their shops, and forgeable ingredients eventually grow back with a little patience. Upgrade your kitchen to stash a collection of ingredients ready for cooking and experimentation or sell them to merchants for Beads, your precious currency for trading.
Use your acquired ingredients to create magical dishes. Different attributes require you to think about your ingredient selection. Figure out and learn how flavors mix and how to meet customers‘ odd and complex requests for food. Closely follow recipes or experiment with your own creations, then sell or deliver your potions, meals, teas, and pastries to friends and customers. Be it local cuisine or Flora’s hometown recipes, everything to satisfy the tastebuds of different folks, from the croaking Gaball to the feline Tilin.
Start with basic equipment and acquire new kitchen tools. Unlock more rooms to arrange and customize your tools to your liking and maximize efficiency when cooking. Put your unused creations up for sale, sort your ingredients into storage, and grow some plants in the backyard. It would be the perfect place to call your own if it wasn’t for this unwanted roommate and a lingering capitalist dread.

Navigate the town during your deliveries, climb bell towers and old ramparts, or delve through challenging old catacombs. Grow as a witch and acquire upgrades to your movement abilities to discover new routes and hard-to-reach places or open shortcuts that lead back to your store. Uncover and learn the twisted pathways on the map and remember the whereabouts of the townsfolk. Inspired by the Metroidvania genre and condensed into a cozy cooking game.

A little rough around the edges but I really enjoy the core gameplay loop. Some minor UI things (probably exacerbated by my playing on keyboard/mouse, but I don't have a controller): - Ctrl hotkey to access filters disappears after I use it the first time I open the menu - "Deadspots" while scrolling; scroll wheel only works on the top half-ish of the filter menu and the bottom half-ish of the left side bar - Similarly some spots don't allow me to open the map. I understand not being able to while in motion (jumping, on elevators) but I can't seem to open it while on stairs either. - R or Esc usually work for closing menus, except for the sidebar which is C. Gameplay gripes: - I'm not sure what watering the crops does; it's also a bit tedious since you have to carry water from the sink one at a time. So I've just been neglecting them lol. - I wish Hina could help sell dishes while I'm out and about. Even if she eats one of them or something lol. Things I like! - Putting random things in a pot to see what kind of recipes come out. There's a lot of unique art for the food, and it's not just recolors either! - The characters are fun, perfect amount of story breadcrumbs to flesh them out. - Exploration is also interesting, I'm not great at platformers but figure I can turn the easy setting on if it gets too tough. It's nice having that option available. - Personally I feel the food requests strike a good balance between stating the requirements plainly and still having to figure stuff out. The beginning ones are super straightforward and just follow a strict recipe, while the later ones specify the required components, but finding a recipe that fulfills those requirements is completely on the player. - Similarly I found the exploration progression to be pretty smooth. I was able to keep track of which spots I haven't explored yet, and when I picked up new items, knew which areas I could now revisit.
This is a neat little cozy cooking game with some mild platforming elements. There is a good hook with a nice sense of progression gaining new abilities, new recipes, etc. and just when the map traveling starts to get tedious, you'll start to unlock fast travel options. That being said, there are some things that are a bit disjointed. The recipes you need to make to fulfill the quests are half the time real head scratchers that you need a good understanding of how the cooking system works and to improves beyond the recipes the game gives you. You are thrown into this aspect without much hand holding and it can get kind of frustrating with the quest requirement restrictions seemingly blocking all your feasible options. The menu system for navigating ingredients is a bit tedious at times as well as the limits on your inventory space, but in fairness I think these things were added so as to not make the game too easy. I've got a little over 20 hours into it and I'm pretty sure I'm almost at the end, so let that gauge how much you might be willing to pay for it if it is or is not on sale.
Magical Delicacy is a beautiful and cozy pixel platformer that's exploration-based for a majority of its gameplay. I had initially found it as a demo during a Steam Next Fest, though I am glad to say the demo has been a permanent feature of its home page since then. Because of how easily I got into it and its gameplay, this is one of the few games I did buy during its first release. You play as a witch, Flora, making a name for herself in the small town of Grat. You get leased a building to live in and cook out of (with a roommate that comes as an unknowing part of that package), and you take orders from the townsfolk you meet to earn money and progress through the game. As you explore more places in town, you find more ingredients you can harvest and use for your recipes, which in turn helps unlock harder recipes and more quests. The gameplay itself is very easy and does have support for both mouse-keyboard and controller, though I did play this with my controller since that is my preferred gaming method. The tutorial on how to harvest and how to cook is easy to grasp and as you progress through the game, you do learn new abilities that can help you reach new heights and gather new ingredients. The map updates as you explore, and depending on what markers you have active, can help you locate shops, ingredients, and a whole lot more. It's also easy money to sell your unused items in the shop as you cook and plant things in your backyard, especially with the long shop hours and the ability to raise or lower prices of the items you cook. The one problem I had was the lack of direction during certain parts of the game. For the most part, you just take on quests and explore, and that is more than enough to get you further with the storyline. However, there are a couple moments during gameplay where I couldn't figure out how to get an item and move forward with the gameplay. My biggest recommendation for keeping track of who to talk to is to look for the little white AND yellow indicators above the NPCs heads (they are only white if they have nothing new to talk about). It also can be a little grindy trying to get all the ingredients you need for all the recipes, especially when you need to also keep track of which shop sells what items, but for the most part I didn't mind it since I'm a resource hoarder anyways. The music was a cozy addition to the background, and was different for most locations so it wasn't just a perpetual loop. I also thought it was a fun touch to change every track to something more gentle when it turned to night. It was very cute and added to the relaxed atmosphere of the game. The pixelated art style was done very well and does and excellent job of adding depth despite it being a side-scrolling platformer. You can tell where there are stairs, what's interactable and what's in the background, and the overall art style is just very homey and vibrant. Now I was slightly difficult to discern the design for the cat-people in the game (I have forgotten their official name whoops), especially with the royal family, but having them meow as their talking noise made it easier. Outside of that, I loved every aspect of the art design and how everything looks. The achievements were definitely fulfilling and there are plenty to keep people busy during the storyline and afterwards. There are easy ones (story-based), and hidden ones that require recipes found and the like. I will say that completing all the achievements, especially the Variety Star achievement, was a little frustrating because I'm not sure what qualifies as "using" an ingredient (
I wrote down every usable ingredient and went through the list twice before I finally figured out what item I hadn't used, and I know I had used it before
) but all achievements can absolutely be gotten. Overally, Magical Delicacy was a beautiful game with a captivating storyline and easy-enough gameplay that I enjoyed playing through it. Sure, there were some rough patches, but it was well worth the frustration in my opinion. Definitely worth the play through and the money I had spent on it when I bought it on release!
This is a wonderful game! It has a cute art-style and good music :)
Adorei!!!
Great gameplay and amazing graphics. Completely finished the game and achievements and still itching for more. Absolutely will recommend this game to friends and when meeting new gamers. Love to the devs and artist. <3
As much as this game has grown on me, it's really grindy from the get-go. Story and music are okay. The cooking mechanic can be a bit confusing at the start, but once you figure it out, it's pretty easy. Fast travel takes a bit to get to, and getting around the map CAN get tedious. Menus can be frustrating with a controller. If you enjoy mindless grinding, sure. I recommend using a guide for recipes if you need help.
