TLDR; While it is no doubt an interesting game and can be very enjoyable at times, it is also an excruciatingly painful and annoying hassle at times. Mafia is a good example of ambition getting the better of a game. Its impressive seeing what the developers were able to pull off with a relatively smaller budget, but that only goes so far when playing the actual game beyond something being neat here and there is either a chore or, to more sincerely explain my feelings, a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ pain in the ass... which even then, 90% of the time of which is an understatement. From the awful, awful pacing between checkpoints (which THERE IS NO MANUAL SAVING IN THIS 24 YEAR OLD PC GAME) or how ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ pathetic Thomas Weaksauce Angelo is in any combat encounters, or the near constant stun locking in melee encounters or just any encounter with someone equipped with a Tommy gun (god rest your soul you poor bastard). It doesn't come up to being very fun when so much of the game just really isn't or is just painfully difficult or confusing. Apparently, the difficulty is actually adaptive, but that doesn't benefit the player or the gameplay much when you just die and die and die constantly in the same spots over and over. Also, the health cheat is KREFJEZIVOT. Thank me later. Unfortunately, the story doesn't much make up for the annoying experience. While it is an interesting story, yes, its not very well told, and even less so because some poor dialogue snd voice over work, especially for 2002 standards (Which mind you, is after Metal Gear Solid 1 & 2 and Silent Hill 1 & 2). This is probably because the script was translated to English feom Czech, handed off to an English outsourced VO studio, and handed back to the non-english understanding script writers. More than enough times that I can count, there are awkward lines or readings you just don't understand either why they were used or what emotion was even supposed to be conveyed in the first place. This actually get worse as the game continues, as if whoever was overseeing the translated VO stopped caring or something else happened. To end off the issues of this game, it is a mess to get working on modern machines. My review will say I played this on Steam Deck, and thats absolutely true because Windows 11 despises D3D8 games (Windows 10 does not fair much differently). Steam Deck wasn't much different but at least there's ProtonQT and DXVK built into the Steam Deck. Even then, after you fix the game for Widescreen or whatever else (controller too for SD), the game crashes at horrible points mid mission. Not even a message, just freezes and makes you restart or boots you out. It is especially just terrible if you've been doing the same part over and over and over and suddenly, it just crashes, losing 15-20+ minutes worth of progress only for you to be forced to do it all over again because the confusing and inexcusable lack of any ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ manual saves. If I had any positives to end this review with, it'd actually be the driving. Yes, thats right. The driving in this game is very solid for its time, and very well appreciated for a game like it, as it takes on a more realistic "sim" like model rather than the GTA or arcade style of driving you see in most open world games. If you have ever played any racing sims (rally or just general sim), you will probably enjoy this game a lot. Most of the fun I had with this game was actually the driving because it was different than other games. I would actually go to say whoever told you this game has bad or even "the worst driving" is either a liar or they're just terrible at racing or driving games. There is also a very fun Free Ride mode that gives a lot of replayability, alongside Free Ride extreme. All in all, if you enjoy car games, that would by only case of recommending this game. If you want to play Mafia 1 to... for some reason experience the story that isnt much better told in the remake, just play the remake. Where Mafia Classic is a drunk uncle who will hit and cuss at you, Mafia Definitive is at least polite with it.
Mafia Driving simulator, or at least that's what it felt like at times. For it's age the game holds up well and the story is still great. 7/10

Holy God. I can already see the backlash my review is going to get, but I don't care. This game isn't for me. If you like it, sure, great, that's fine. The game is an obvious classic from the PS2 generation so I imagine a lot of people buying this on Steam are people wanting to take a ride back to their childhoods. Unfortunately, in spite of the game's admittedly well done style, it's almost unplayable. Steering the cars are like trying to turn battleships, and the first chapter (literally the beginning of the game) is abysmal. You're just tossed into a terrible car chase with no good chance to prepare, and your car actually feels like it's going in slow-motion. Am I seriously having a car chase at 25 M.P.H? Yeah, I know these are very old cars, but did it need to be this tedious? I'm a huge fan of L.A. Noire (set in the 1940s) and the driving was fine in that game. I also can't fathom who would actually want to play with manual gear selection in a video game. What's next, manually having to get your character to remember to breathe and exhale? Bear in mind I did play the tutorial and took my time. Maybe the game should have spent less time trying to cram my head with a hundred different things I can do when walking and rather should have explained the awful car basics better. I also believe this game has been remastered - maybe I'll play that one day when I've washed the taste of this dated relic out of my mouth.
I mean uh. It's decent. Dated as hell, but decent. I'd never pay money for it though, so that's why I can't recommend it. The plot is solid. The gameplay is basic, but fun, lots of driving and shooting, typical action-adventure. Nothing to write home about, but I mostly enjoyed my time spent playing, even if it's not something I talk about often. But it has a ton of flaws. Just to mention a few, the city is empty as hell, the driving sequences are extremely stretched, the rare auto-save and the lack of manual saving sucks, the driving is clunky as well... If you got it for free and you really have nothing better to do, why not. But the bar for "nothing better to do" is extremely, extremely low, you'd usually have something better to do, and you definitely don't want to pay for it.
My childhood game! I spent countless hours playing it. I have to say that I love every part of this game and sure some people today might say that it's old and the graphics don't look very good anymore, but for me and for many people especially from Czech Republic and Slovakia this game is a true national treasure. Personally Mafia has a very special place in my heart. Even though it's an older game I would still highly recommend giving it a try. The graphics may show their age, but the game makes up for it with an incredible story, memorable characters, amazing missions and many unforgettable moments. The atmosphere is one of the strongest parts of the game. The city feels alive, the music is fantastic and the whole experience really makes you feel like you're part of a classic mafia movie. The gameplay might be a little challenging for some modern players at first, but once you get used to it, it's easy to see why so many people still love this game today. This game is a classic and one of the best story driven games ever made. For me, it will always be something special and I still enjoy coming back to it after all these years. 10/10
