Long story short: Driver: Parallel Lines is in every aspect an average game for its time. That‘s also the reason I don‘t recommend it: it‘s too generic, the plot is extremely flat, and all the mechanics like shooting and driving can also be summarized as average at best. If you want Driver because of a good story, good shooting mechanics or good driving, I strongly recommend getting other games from that era. On the other hand, if you want to experience the - as far as I know - only game that actually shows you New York from two different eras - 1978 and 2006, respectively -, I recommend to check this Driver out, especially on sale. It‘s also the only aspect there it does a good job, in my opinion. Long review: Without spoilering too much, you won‘t experience significant character development or even some background stories. I won‘t necessarily call the story „bad“, but if you want to play Driver because of a good story and maybe even think about something like GTA IV, just no. GTA IV‘s story is like five standard deviations more interesting, polished and shows actually very good character development. This game does not. Still, like I said: It‘s not written in a bad manner, it just lacks any substantial depth: I would bet that the screenplay for the story didn‘t surpass ten pages. Regarding the shooting mechanics: They do their job, and especially the shooting aspect is, in my opinion, acceptable for the time the game was released. The same I said above applies here: You won‘t play the game because of the shooting mechanics. They‘re dull, sometimes even whack. I think the mechanics can be perfectly summarized with one sentence: The game doesn‘t register head shots. Yep, you need to empty your magazine for one enemy. Followed by the driving mechanics: It‘s okay, the driving feels organic and not that frustrating. The 2006 cars feel the same like the 1978 cars, even if the franchise is called „Driver“, you also won‘t play the game purely for the driving mechanics. The same I said above applies here: Get - even an old! - Need for Speed title, get Midnight Club, if you want a game focusing on actual good driving. This game won‘t offer even the slightest of the experience actual racing games would offer. Last, but not least, and probably the only aspect where the game shines, is the map, the atmosphere, and, especially, the switch between 1978 and 2006 New York. Yes, New York feels atmospheric and the game regarding this aged well. Both New Yorks have their own era-typical feel, music and design. This 'dichotomy' of two different New Yorks may be unique in the world of gaming, and for exactly that, Driver offers an interesting, or at least unique, experience in exploring two different eras of an iconic city. Like I said in the introduction: The only thing Driver does well and unique is the map and era design. For every other aspect of the game, there are tons of better games out there, even from the era the game was released back then.

I changed my mind! I changed my mind! I changed my miiind!
They don't make them like they used to. Good gameplay, good graphics, good soundtrack.
