Disgraced soldier Demetri is exiled to Secren, a dangerous world devoid of women. Earthlings are smaller and weaker than the violent men of Secren. Demetri's only hope for survival is to bond with a strong mate who can love and protect him. The heterosexual Italian-American is reluctant.

"Maelstrom: A Yaoi Visual Novel" is a love story about a handsome young man wrongly-convicted, then sentenced to hard time on an All-Male Desert-Mining Planet. To survive, our "heteros3xual" hero will have to "betroth" himself to one of several strong, gay male Power Figures, most whom are at war with each other!! ART: The artwork in this Adult Visual Novel (AVN) is VERY S3XY, especially for 2D renderings!! However, there is NO explicit visuals in this Sci-Fi Love Story!! Although it's plot is intriguing, these renders are practically a PG-production!! Regardless, the artists depict a BEAUTIFUL Western-Inspired landscape, complete with Rail-fencing, dilapidated-barns, and desert-mines beneath starry skies!! The art is so ROMANTIC, it's "screenshot-worthy" and combines with epic story-telling to keep us enraptured to conclusion!! STORY: This AVN is SO professionally produced, the Hero's conflict of surrendering his heteros3xuality and mate for survival is a challenge most people would not believe achievable!! However, this Sci-Fi-saga spins it's tale SO well we find ourselves disappointed HE resists his LOVER for FAR TOO LONG!! In fact, this happens to a FAULT!! Realistically, I don't believe most men would choose NOT to satisfy their s3xual needs, even if it meant same-S3X partners--ALL because NO females were available!! Our Hero resists giving in to what he clearly comes to desire!! And unfortunately, this HURTS the story's immersion!! WORSE: the AVN also denies ANY s3xually-explicit scenes! Albeit, conclusions ARE satisfactorily achieved!!! SUMMARY: For a CREATIVE SCI-FI-Saga featuring: Lust, Love, Adventure, Battles, Violence, Hate, Romance and Vengeance, this AVN spins a tale you will most likely become TOO CAPTIVATED TO QUIT!! If you're shopping for ARTISTICALLY-RENDERED STORY, LOVE, and ACTION, this is one you DON'T WANT TO MISS!! HOWEVER, if you're one who REQUIRES explicit hardcore ACTION, you WON'T FIND IT HERE!! For THIS RECOMMENDATION, you have to choose ONE or the OTHER!!
💬 Supportive Caveat This recommendation comes from a place of genuine support for creators making M/M games. Even when a title doesn’t align with my personal tastes, I believe it matters that it exists and that someone put real effort into telling an M/M story. Representation and variety in this space are still growing, and not every game needs to be made specifically for me to deserve support. That said, this one ultimately wasn’t for me. The straight-coded MC, the heavy internal resistance to queerness, and the lack of visual erotic payoff took me out of the experience, even though the sci-fi premise and overall execution were solid. I’m recommending it because it is a legitimate M/M game and will work for players who enjoy story-heavy yaoi with minimal explicit visuals, even if it didn’t click for me personally. 🎮 Gameplay & Genre Visual novel from Y Press Games with multiple routes and meaningful choices. It took me about 9 hours to unlock all achievements. By the end, I admittedly rushed through the final route. 🔥 M/M Content This is one of Y Press’s weaker entries for me. While the story is framed around M/M pairings, the MC starts explicitly straight and spends almost the entirety of each route resisting the romance. He does come around in every route, but the hesitation is prolonged and not particularly appealing. Sex is described rather than shown, with no explicit visuals, which significantly dulls the erotic impact. 🎨 Visuals & Style Very Japanese yaoi–leaning in style. The character designs feature effeminate bodies and odd facial proportions that just didn’t work for me. If you enjoy classic yaoi aesthetics, this may land better, but it was a miss for my taste. 🗣️ Tone & Writing The writing itself is competent and the sci-fi premise is genuinely interesting. The worldbuilding is solid and the game commits fully to its setting. That said, it lacks the erotic energy of Alpha Hole Prison or the charm and warmth of Morningdew Farms. Even compared to those titles, this one feels restrained and emotionally distant. 👍 Best Thing The sci-fi concept and structure. A hostile, male-only world with its own social rules is a compelling idea, and the game executes that premise thoughtfully. 👎 Worst Thing A straight MC who resists M/M intimacy for basically the entire run, paired with no explicit visuals and an art style I personally disliked. It never fully clicked emotionally or erotically. ⭐ Final Verdict Maelstrom is a well-made Y Press game, but it’s not one of my favorites from them. It doesn’t have the erotic punch of Alpha Hole Prison or the easy charm of Morningdew Farms. Still, it’s competently executed and worth a look if you enjoy sci-fi BL and traditional yaoi aesthetics. I don’t see myself revisiting it. I also curate a Steam page reviewing M/M games if you’re looking for more titles in this space: https://store.steampowered.com/curator/45790038/
Brainbox is my favorite character! Love the conversation on the way to the village for the lottery. (trying not to give too much away!) I absolutely love this game, got all three good endings in 25 hours! Can't wait for the bartenders route!!! I highly recommend this game lots of funny moments to even out the really bad ones.
A decent VN with lots of tongue in cheek writing. + Nice art, even if most of the character design is so-so. + Good writing, for the most part. + Interesting story. - Multiple uses of "should of/could of". Please. It's HAVE! - At times, the dialogues read out like fanfiction, especially with the BB. - No real smut or actual nudity.
The game was different from what I mostly look for in a visual novel. While at first I really didn't vibe with the MC Demetri he slowly grew on me. It was a little hard and sometimes I had trouble going between the brainbox and his name on the box. I think that's my dyslexia kicking in though. The routes are very well done and have a twist on each of them. The art is my favorite part it's so well done. Especially in Zheng Li's route. His expression in a cut scene with Demetri held such an intense look and gaze that honestly made him so interesting. His expressions and how he acted was interesting to me and the art just added to the bonus. It's a great game that's worth it play and enjoy. Also Jadar needs more hugs. I think we can all agree.
Good Story
The story is very endearing! Here I am, finally having finished it and I definitely think it's worth playing! The story is creative and a bit of an alien/AI-sci-fi Yaoi theme going on --which I loved about it. You follow the main character Demetri as he's sent to planet Secren for punishment. He's given an AI called Brainbox that connects to him and becomes essentially one with his body. Brainbox is not only needed for translation of the planet's language, but as someone who can relay the MCs true feelings be it light or heavy towards the audience with certain topics, when the MC himself is unwilling to admit his true thoughts or feelings. I thought this was a nice addition, and an interesting more personal viewpoint. This is because often times as humans we tend to hide our true thoughts or feelings from others, and sometimes even from ourselves to protect ourselves. So I like that we get to see the MCs turmoils/struggles, his true thoughts/feelings via Brainbox. Brainbox is also kind, and acts as a friend to the MC and is even funny sometimes, especially when they seem like a fan ready to match make their friend/themselves with their favorite idol, lol. Brainbox in my opinion, is definitely nice company to have along, I think even more so for the MC whose in an unfamiliar place and is alone at first. I do recommend this game, but do keep in mind this game covers some heavier topics, and that this imaginative world isn't entirely bunnies and rainbows. It makes sense though, because this is a whole other imagined planet/world that doesn't follow/won't follow the same customs of earth or ideals. So it was fun getting to learn about a whole new world with the MC. It was like going on an adventure with him, even though it's only fictional. Pros: -A nice short game, won't take you hrs to finish. I spent about 18hrs, and that was for all routes and BAD ENDS -4 available RO's (Jader, Helix, Zheng Li, and Sawyer) -Beautiful art CGs by Dany & Dany and other art by other artists like the Background CGs -Brainbox (in my opinion is a great new perspective into the mind of the MC, I have yet to see in other VNs. It's kind of like having a first person view via a third person narrative) -Intimately written sex scenes/with suggestive CGs (not every route tho, or for every intimate moment) -KISS KISS CG moments all around/and good romance moments -Story is moving, I cried, you'll cry, we all might cry -Achievements and Endings are all pretty easy to get for those perfectionists out there Cons: -No NSFW (but that is already noted before purchase, so I knew that going in) -A more simple control system for the options menu. -Some heavier topics, in my opinion not really a dark game. -A couple misspelled words here or there -Sometimes I got lost in story/scene transitions -For me, (idk about anyone else) but the options menu buttons sometimes glitch or don't work right away. For example I'll click on Full screen or Window buttons for game display. But then to get it on the one I want, I sometimes have to click it a few times before it works. So nothing major really. *This is just me personally, but I would prefer a more in depth options menu. Like a history or dialogue button to pull up prior text for when you accidentally skip too far and then don't want to load your last save (if it does exist...then my bad, I just totally must have missed it), or a skip to next choice button (vs a skip all read text or unread text). All in all, I definitely recommend this game. It was cute and very endearing to play, even through all the tough moments for the MC and the other characters. And of course, there's also some very gorgeous art CGs to feast your eyes on.
This is another example of an excellent yaoi title from Y-Press, by my estimation they have put out the best gay/bara content on steam. Few other visual novels compare to the kind of story telling we got here, not to mention this is a visual retelling of a book series which got me interested in reading the actual stories themselves. The addition of a fourth route was really sweet though I haven't gotten to play it yet, at the time of writing this I have completed the main three routes and I have to say hands down Jader is my favorite for a variety of reasons. I think part of it is the way that he's portrayed as a sympathetic victim of his circumstances and not a cold blooded killer. Each of the love interests really do give you something to go on and I found myself rooting for each of them to succeed with the hard headed protagonist. When they finally did it was joyous! I highly recommend this title for anyone looking for a change of pace in the romance section. It's not just about the kissing, its about the socio-economic impacts of worker exploitation too. Seize the means of protection lads.
Based on the novel series Maelstrom, this game is a refreshing new perspective exploring other romantic interests for protagonist Demetri. The kind mining foreman, Helix, the torn raider, Jader, and the arrogant ruler of the planet, Zheng Li. Explore the stories behind old and new characters, unravel the mysteries behind the planet Secren, and learn about what it means to have lighting strike.
Sadly it has quite quick endings and absolutely zero 18+ gallery which shocked me the most...
