This was a very surprising VN. “Love in the Glen” is about an interior designer called “Zoe Richardson”, who the player controls. Like most visual novels, you go through the story making choices and decisions for her and then watch her destiny unfold in front of your very eyes. In that sense there is nothing new and it’s what you’d expect from a Visual Novel. Not that that’s a bad thing, if you buy a chocolate cake you do expect it to taste like chocolate, do you not? The surprising thing about it is the storyline. It really doesn’t feel very anime at all. Which does come as a surprise as one does expect a VN to somewhat have an anime feel (remember my chocolate cake reference? Well that applies here too). That being said, it’s not a bad story, the writing is actually pretty damn good. Granted there are some odd moments where you get a surprisingly short storyline, if you embark on one of the long ones you’ll definitely get your money’s worth. Especially if you’re like me and have already read many VN’s and are looking for something different. If you haven’t ever played a VN before then I wouldn’t recommend this game as it is in so many ways not like other VN’s and you might get the wrong impression of the genre. Other aspects of the VN were rather good too. I liked the cute little mini game and the music was always very nice and fitted the mood really well. Of course it had it’s weak points too, there are no game settings and there are some bits in the story that felt a bit odd. All in all a good VN with an entertaining story! Chocolate cake! TL;DR A good all-round VN but rather different to most. I wouldn’t recommend this to someone as his or her first Visual Novel, but for anyone who happens to like them, this is a must-have.
Pros: - Good writing - Interesting story - Many endings - Choices DO matter - Great music - Fun mini-game Cons: - Character sprites are a bit crap - Styling could be better. - A bit short (but then again you do get 7 endings) - Some of the button placements are a bit weird.
+ Liked the inclusion of the match 3 mini-game (though what it has to do with interior design really is a mystery) + Unusual setting for a VN + I liked the inclusion of a f/f route + Variety of characters with unique backgrounds - Very short (I completed all endings in 57 minutes and the rest of the playtime is idling for cards) - Boring story (you don't really do much aside from go out to eat and go to work) - Characters don't really seem different to each other voice-wise and you don't actually get to interact with them much - There's one part that plays a lengthy audio clip of spoken dialogue with no subtitles
I've bought this game based solely on the reviews and oh boy I believe it's worth it only if one buys it on like 50% sale. It starts really nice and the quality of writing is pretty great and it was really interesting up till the endings. Those are too abrupt. This game feels like it should be at least twice the current size. I hit 100% completion in just 3 hours. Overall I liked the writing but I really didn't like how half-baked the story felt. However it's an indie game and the base price is not too steep and I believe I shouldn't judge it too harshly. So it's a recommendation bearing in mind its shortness. Buy it on sale.
While not being something really original, even with the match-3 additions, this visual novel is definitely great to play in my opinion and hosts an awesome soundtrack since the beginning, that you can get as a DLC (16 mp3 tracks, mostly an instrumental jazz/pop that sounds great to me)! The game features a reduced amount of customization options, mainly related to text speed and such, but it's ok since the save system works perfectly. The background are amazing, I really enjoyed all the artwork, while the characters aren't that awesome-looking but still they have all their own facial expressions and the whole game gives a good impression, although it keeps an indie flavour in the whole system (text style, graphics, movements and such). So, after having seen so many great works of art (not to mention the moving backgrounds!) it's really a shame that we can't get a section dedicated only to see and download them! The other feature of this game is that all in all it has lots of endings and choices, but it's short - so, you'll have to go through multiple playthroughs in order to see all the endings (there's 7 of them if I'm not wrong) and you'll start every time from the beginning, if you don't save of course in the middle of the game! Love in the Glen classifies itself as "otome" since the beginning - that means this is a game targeted at a girls' public, and where the main goals often involve creating relationships, searching for the good endings and such. But it's really enjoyable by everyone! The story takes place in a Western environment - you'll control in fact Zoe, a (female, of course - it's otome! xD) designer, and you'll have to take all the decisions that will control her life. As I said, there's no Japanese feeling here - the main character has Richardson as surname, and meeting guys like Finn Iverson and Johanna St. Marks definitely won't make you feel like you're in East Asia.. :) This is great. I think everyone making a new visual novel should create what they feel suiting in the best way what they're developing and in this case, the story makes great sense and it's entertaining albeit a little bit short. I'm thankful to Sapphire Dragon Productions for this, since I'm always eager to explore new territories and something set in the States isn't a bad thing even if we're talking about visual novels and of course, characters somehow designed in a vague "anime" style. Plus, some endings will take you through new characters and lots of questions, which is good to explore.. just don't think of this as a long visual novel, nothing else :) And the game isn't so "easy" as it may seem (like it happened to me in my first short playthrough) - the story can be quite "serious" and well, it's always greatly written in my opinion, especially if you explore the long routes (you'll see only adults here, so you'll have to face the divorce of the main character among other things that will eventually happen). As I said above, the match-3 element of the game isn't definitely something original - I've played dozens of visual novels including mini-games and such, but it's not by any means out of place in the broad context of the narration, and most of all it's funny and refreshing (and it won't activate in half of the routes, too!). Maybe just the price is too high, but you can easily find this one in bundles or on sale, I saw it many times discounted for the 80% of its price (now on some sites the keys are sold at 90% for the deluxe edition, so.. xD) and 1€/$ or little more is definitely great if you want to spend some hours on a very nice visual novel. All in all, I think that if you like visual novels in general you'll like this one too. The story is nice, the backgrounds are great, the mini-games are never boring and most of all it's well-written, easy to read and with lots of multiple choices and endings. Have fun!
Do i love it.. not really. But it demonstrates the regrets you have when you make a choice to take one path in life instead of another. Can you redeem yourself? I found in this game you aren't automatically pigeon holed into a story direction, which was not what i was expecting. There are some common options and settings which were missing, which is fine. There is however no auto read function which makes getting all the endings a bit tiresome. Well.. can Love in the Glen redeem itself.. I would say what it loses in in its artwork it makes up for with earnest storylines.
A good improvement compared to the previous titles released by these developers. The art style is simple, and the only thing that bothered me was the lack of expressions on the characters (they usually have all the same face, sometimes it might change just a bit). But that’s a pet peeve of mine, maybe other people won’t see this as a flaw. The soundtrack is really good. It was what made me buy this game at first! Also, this is probably the longest game by these devs. It didn’t felt rushed, the routes were more elaborated and the characters were more likable. Get it on a good sale! 5/10.
