FORTRESS OF FEAR is a first person puzzle adventure where you must traverse a dangerous puzzle filled castle to rescue your girl... well, plot isn't the strong point here but it suffices. It's also a difficult review to write. When a game is obviously defective, it's easy to write a review. When it's great, it almost doesn't matter what you write because so many other people will have said the same. When it's right on the line, that's where it gets very difficult. The game is made with Godot, and while I have never seen a decent game ever made with Godot's 2D engine (it's trash), this is the second game I've seen using Godot's 3D engine and once more I'm impressed. Because of the choice of engine, the game has great smooth framerates and runs well. This is a testament to the developers and the engine. One important note is that even though this is an amateur project, it does seem to be sincerely and genuinely made. I couldn't find any flipped assets, plagiarism or any other kind of insincere actions from the developer, but unfortunately genuine intentions alone are not enough to produce a brilliant PC gaming experience. The game assets and textures are passable but not the best. The puzzles are likewise okay, and there's enough content for a couple of hours but no more than that. I thought the voice acting for the introduction was okay, too. Ultimately what vexes me about this is that it feels a bit like a student project. And the stamina thing... moving around is unpleasant because if you run (and the maps aren't that small so you will want to hustle to get through the puzzles), you hit some poorly defined stamina wall and slow down... this is utterly un-fun and immediately annoying. If we're making a puzzle game, make a puzzle game, don't slot in stamina, ammo, reloads, flight simulators etc etc. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard, but only one one key issue. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. I'm not completely sure why the public reception for the game was as bad as it was. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 2 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this game is surprising. I've seen many worse games with much better reception, even garbage joke games have gotten more players. I suspect price is the key factor. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? FORTRESS OF FEAR has the laughable price of $13 USD, for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games. For comparison, the $13 asking price for this game could get you games like "Rust", "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt" or "Hearts of Iron IV". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this. I believe that's the sole reason this game didn't do much better, it's a $1-$2 game at best. Games don't exist in a vacuum. There's hundreds of better options at the same price point as this. Unfortunately Steam reviewers aren't presented with a "Maybe" option... if they did, that's what I'd choose. This isn't a completely bad game, but it's also not one of the best. It's seriously overpriced. As always, if you read my review and you can overlook the negatives I've called out, or they just aren't important to you, then by all means go ahead and buy this. Nice adventure game with interesting and varied puzzles! The atmosphere is mysterious and sometimes frightening. The game suffers a little in terms of settings and because of the rare engine, but it's all nonsense against the background of great gameplay! What a refreshing little puzzle game, coupled with beautiful scenery and original music. Apparently the game developer composed his own music and designed all of the art himself. One man band. There is a depth of lore to be discovered in this game, the clue to which lies in the final game chamber (unlock-able) if you manage to complete the game with limited deaths. The refreshing element of this game is puzzles that are simply fun to solve and none that I have seen in a puzzle gaming world before. So, a puzzle game with AAA game graphics. Perfect!
