Love how the game is flirting with the old third person survival horror such as SH or RE. Fixed camera angles, a very familiar protagonist and strange things that is happening at the Long Night Camp. I found weird dolls everywhere that kept freaking me out. Wish that there were more episodes. Have had this game in the backlog for a decade, still really enjoyed it as third person survival horrors are one of my favourites.
Billed as episode 1, this game now lays abandoned by a developer/publisher that I think is defunct at this point. Now it's just part of the glut of low budget horror games strewn on Steam that essentially exist to make low quality youtube fodder--although Long Night seems to have received very little exposure in the first place.

I really liked this game. I don't often write game reviews, so I'll do my best to keep this to the point and not ramble on too much. Or at the very least, keep it organized. STORY: There is clearly a -lot- of stuff going on in this story, and in an episodic game, obviously you're going to be left with a lot of loose ends after just the first chapter. I'm a bit of a completionist and a fast reader, so I was perfectly happy to track down and read every single note and diary in the game, and it didn't break the flow for me at all, but those who lost patience with games such as Amnesia in this regard might not be so keen. I don't mind feeling confused about a game's story as long as the mystery is actually compelling and not just a bunch of random run-of-the-mill spooky bull, and for me, it definitely is compelling. The main draw for me isn't the history behind the creepy going-ons, though-- let's face it, it's pretty much all been done and it's nothing against the game when I say I don't expect much there -- but the dynamic of the four main characters and learning more about their stories. In the under two hours it took me to finish this episode, I actually felt a little emotionally invested in the characters' fates, which isn't a familiar feeling for me when it comes to horror games. GAMEPLAY: I'll be honest -- I almost quit at the very first confrontation, because I got myself killed just about twenty times in a row; and the last checkpoint was directly -before- a non-skippable cutscene. It was ridiculous. BUT stay with me. Yes, it can be tricky at first being chased around the map because a) your camera is all over the place man it does not just follow right behind you and b) it's hella dark and you know in horror movies how when they're running they always look back and trip on something yeah this will basically literally happen because there are bushes everywhere so you'll be running and your camera will flip the ♥♥♥♥ out and next thing you know you're careening into a bush and then you're dead. but hey if you look at it that way, it just adds to the challenge, right? also, your character is asthmatic, which means if you overuse sprint, he'll have an attack and literally just be unable to move. this is actually a detail I really like, because while lots of horror games have the exhaustion mechanic, this one actually comes up with a good explanation for why your character has the stamina of a two year old (among the sleep also had a good explantion in that your character was in fact a two year old). After all the practice of that first confrontation, though, and realizing that the little glowy blue things are places you can hide (thanks for the heads up, game, I should have known that the proper thing to do when running for my life was stop and investigate shiny stuff by the side of the road ) the rest of the game was perfectly playable. SCARINESS: Let's keep it real here; horror games are my favorite thing in the world, but I'm an enormous wussy. I wouldn't play them if I wasn't in it for a good rush though. With that said, for me, this game had a really nice balance in this department. There are areas where you feel constantly vulnerable, areas where you feel pretty safe (a nice relief from constant tension) and areas where you really have no idea what's going on and isn't that so much worse. There was a good atmosphere throughout and a refreshing variety of different types of creepy, none of which were particularly jump-scarey -- another plus. It was satisfyingly scary / creepy without being cripplingly so. I felt nervous, tense, and sometimes downright on-edge, but not uncomfortably stressed. ADVICE FOR NEW PLAYERS: You can hide in the blue glowy spots. The little glowy insignias on the wall in some places allow you to save. There's a map in the D4's cabin that you can take. As you find hiding spots, visit cabins, and find dead ends, they will be marked on there. Super useful. Also, you can't run when you're holding your lighter. TLDR; Overall, an interesting storyline with a lot of depth and detail. Good soundtrack, pleasant art and atmosphere in general. Under-instructive in spots, but I prefer that to games that don't let you think at all. A casually fun challenge level, moderately scary, and mechanics that were definitely imperfect but not enough to detract from the overall experience. Not a game for everyone, but one that I personally loved, and would pay to see a second installment of.
Tags: 3PSurv - Third Person Survival Additional Tags: Delete Local Content & Remove from Library TLDR: Abandonned episodic. Kind of like Resident Evil without combat. Oustanding Issues: -Too dark to see anything at times -Cat & Mouse/Runner segments happen too often, are too confusing and failing them triggers unskipable cutscenes -The world setting makes no sense, shifting from a campfire story to a B movie slasher at the cabin setting to supernatural to dream sequences. -Internal consistency of game world becomes looser as you progress and ends unsatisfyingly with abrupt nonsense ending -The puzzles were just inventory based fetch quests, some of them from hotspots that only become lootable after you fire a certain sequence of scripting in-game which makes interactivity confusing and forces you to try everything multiple times if you get stuck
Long Night is an okay horror adventure game that shows some promise which sadly I don't think it will ever be completed, okay then story. In camp Long Night four friends are telling each other's scary stories, a usual Camp activity but one kid David talks about a real ghost story told to him by the owner of the camp. So to prove it is real or not the four friends go over to the mysterious cabin and do the ritual, only to be proven that the ritual is true. Now David alone must find his friends and figure out how to escape this nightmare or be just another victim of a campfire story. Now like time, the story is okay this game was supposed to be episodic before it was discontinued which is sad as it had some potential, anyway here is what I liked about the story. I liked the themes/talk of Parental abuse from an emotionally unstable parent I think it was done well. I also liked the Native American themes and I feel like if the game continued it would have more to it. The gameplay is okay it's just a simple get from point A to point B as you hide from the stalker and solve light puzzles, nothing really to write home about. The graphics are okay with some nice uses of colors and some scenery, but it’s nothing I haven't seen before. But I will say I really did like the hand drawn opening and cutscenes they were quite good to look at. The levels are good I like the camp setting from what I can see it feels like a real camp/family retreat if the game continued I'm pretty sure we will see more of it. The characters are good, we don't really spend much time with them but we do get a good indication on their personalities, the tough guy, the daredevil, the shy quiet type and the tomboy, they are typical archetypes for this kind of setting. The monster is good like her design it's pretty spooky. The music is fine nothing really too interesting. Now is this game scary not really, nothing really makes you creep out or push you on edge it's more psychological horror than spooky horror. Now dislike time, there is a problem with the story and that is with the cutscenes they go way too fast to the point where it was hard to read, so I had to basically go on YouTube to watch them in order to understand the story. The gameplay also has a problem and that's the run button feels a bit finicky on a controller, I don't know if it's my controller personally, but it definitely feels finicky and I had to use a keyboard during the last segment because of that. Also another annoying thing about the gameplay moving the character can be a bit of a challenge, I'm not saying it’s like tank controls kind of challenging, but because of the different angles/camera tricks the game uses it can make controlling the character a bit tricky sometimes. Also I hated the last segment with the shark it was very irritating and felt kind of bunk with how often the shark can eat you, it feels like its takes trial and error and a lot of luck to be able to beat that level. The stalker is also inconsistent because when I was playing the game and she was chasing me, when she was able to catch up I thought she was going to kill me only for her to disappear, but other times she would kill me, I don't know it felt more of the luck of the draw. The game also doesn't have achievements which I feel like it should have achievements, especially since there is more than one way to die in this game. Lastly it's sad that this game ended on a cliffhanger I feel like it could been something if it was continued and I hope someday the creator picks the game up again and completes it, but I'm not really expecting that to happen. Okay with that said Long Night is an okay horror adventure game that shows some promise which sadly I don't think it will ever be completed; it has an okay story, okay gameplay and good characters. Now do I recommend this game maybe I mean if it's on sale or if you have like extra five bucks to spend then maybe give this game a shot I just again I really hope the creator picks up this game and completes it.
Just stay away from this Game.
10 years later, I've finally beaten this. Heavily Silent Hill inspired, however just enough of it's own lore and mystery to keep me engaged, I do wish they would release a script outline for what they planned to do with this
