Backed this on KS a while ago now and after finally taking the time to beat the final boss I'm pretty satisfied with my experience. Especially with the platforming/exploration aspect, some of the optional challenges this game offers are awesome. The combat's fun as well, and there is in my opinion a lot of build variety on offer. Just wish some of the items in shops were less expensive cause even with everything explored a bit of grinding is needed, but still this game is a great experience that doesn't take too long and I'd 100% reccomend it.
I don't normally write reviews but I have to say the amount of reviews is crazy given the quality here. I loved the first game but this one blows it out of the water. I know the visuals are quite different and maybe that's why it has such a low amount of reviews, because it doesn't stick out as much as the first game? Idk. I can see some people who didn't like the first game loving this one too. I will say, certain people who loved the first game might not like this one quite as much, but I can't in a million years see someone who liked the first one not liking this one as well. To me, this game blows it out of the water personally and I loved the first one. It absolutely gripped me and I put it hours straight without stopping for the first time with any game in a long time. So good. EDIT: I may have prematurely wrote that review after only playing the game for three hours. I just couldn't see the game taking a dip in quality based off of how great everything had seemed when compared to the previous title. My next two hours have been MUCH less enjoyable and I will finish this review upon completion of the game.
I really want to love this game, but it has some things which make it really frustrating, especially in comparison to the first game. The combat is a lot slower, since the whip has a long attack animation which wasn't a thing in the first game with its instant sword attack. When you get hit, you get knocked back really far and lose control of your character, which often drops you into the void during a boss fight making you lose more damage. The map in this game is also very confusing when compared to the first game. I wish I could leave a review without having to recommend or not recommend, since I wouldn't call it bad in any case, but I think there's a lot of room for improvement Edit: Why does the ghost boss deal the same amount of damage in both Easy and Hardcore? It's the whole reason I started a new save file on an easier difficulty
An extremely competent metroidvania. The platforming challenges in particular were a ton of fun. I would say though that similar to Blasphemous and Blasphemous 2, this feels like a sequel that reverts a bit to the genre mean, losing some of that special element that made the first games have so much personality. I still overwhelmingly reccommend this game, and more so the original.
good, short, concise. a lot of modern "metroivanias" exhaust me because they feel like they have to be 40 hours with endless sidequests and tons of areas to explore with overly long complex platforming sequence that never felt at home to me in the genre. melody of spores on the other hand gets to the point fast, knows what it wants to be and doesn't waste time bloating itself. i couldn't finish the dev's previous game but found this to be a much more robust experience that, while i have a few nitpicks that i could go on about, was still relatively pleasant all the way through.
I finished this game on Normal difficulty with 99.9% map completion. First: the good points. The game is bright and colorful, a nice contrast to Castlevania or Hollow Knight or even Lone Fungus I style asthetics. The platforming is fun, the combat feels good, and there's a wide variety of powerups, abilites, and secret locations. Most of the bosses are tough without feeling unfair. The bad: it's too short. I would have loved about another one or two big areas and a couple of bonus bosses where the difficulty gets cranked to 11 (although there is one boss that does kind of fit that description. I had to come back a couple times with more powerups.). Overall: go play the first game. If you enjoy that, come play this next.
Just getting started in the sequel and absolutely loving it so far. Pixel art is phenomenal, platforming and movement tech is great. Combat is not overly hard but bosses can be difficult and require studying patterns. Absolute beauty!
