I think this game originally sprang during the wars of the pirates of Silicon Valley. Back then, I thought of this game as a fine work of art. I played on a Commodore 64. Even though this avatar came in the form of a stick man, he animated very well. Watching him run and collect gold never got old. I did miss him when I moved on to bigger and more advanced platforms. Through the years, I thought of him from time to time hoping that someone might restore this masterpiece one day. Low and behold, my wish has come true! Not only have they restored the original levels and game feel, but they have also included an updated version with added attractions. I love them both. Still, I haven’t even tried the OTHER THREE MODES yet; one with extra enemy types, puzzles with no enemies, & the world levels made up by players. One thing I always thought amazing; even though the mechanics of this game seem pretty simple, each level seems to require a completely different strategy. Just another reason this game never gets old. Thank you developers! You make people happy. I love you, man!
A Classic That Still Holds Up 40 Years Later
Lode Runner has been part of gaming history since 1983 — and remarkably, it's still great fun to play. The original was created by university student Douglas E. Smith, beginning life in 1982 as a prototype called Kong, then Miner, before Brøderbund published it as Lode Runner in 1983. I first encountered it on the Apple ][, and loved its wonderfully simple mixture of action and puzzle solving: collect the gold, evade the guards, and dig holes in the floor to trap them or create a route through the level. More than forty years later, that basic design remains remarkably playable. Lode Runner Legacy updates the presentation with charming voxel graphics while retaining the addictive puzzle/action gameplay that made the original so much fun. Best of all for those of us who remember the original, Classic Mode includes all 150 levels from the 1983 game, recreated in 3D. There are also new Adventure, Puzzle and Extra modes, local co-op, user-created levels and a level editor. It's a lovely modern treatment of a genuine piece of computer gaming history — accessible to newcomers, but especially enjoyable if you have fond memories of that little stick figure running around an Apple ][ screen collecting piles of gold. Highly recommended.
Disclaimer: Lode Runner holds a special place in my heart. I was introduced to the series on Gameboy as a kid and, although I didn't completely understand everything that was going on, I absolutely loved it. Unusual action-puzzle mechanics, what felt like an endless well of stages, and a level editor! I was in love. Although I never sought them out, Lode Runner would come up again on radar time and time again with Turbo Graphix and getting Virtual Console releases, each having their own charm and challenges. Enter Legacy: Another new take on the Lode Runner formula plus a recreation of the original Apple II game, all in Voxel glory! The new stuff is good - cute characters, new enemies, and the remake of the original feels solid and recreates that look of the original game. The workshop stuff is interesting, although most of the levels I've played are not particularly great - maybe I'm just not picking the right ones. Still, there is a charm to playing through Lode Runner with custom avatars like arcade Mario Bros or Hatsume Miku. Overall, very happy with this game.
5/10 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqJkSa9SExk !!!!!!!!!!!!!THE GAMES İS TOO FAST PLEASE GO BACK TO NES SPEED!!!!!!!!!!!
Simple is best.
Lode Runner Legacy is the latest edition in the classic Lode Runner series, a masterpiece of action puzzle gaming introduced in the U.S. in 1983. Named one of “The Greatest Games of All Time” by GameSpot, Lode Runner was created by Douglas E. Smith in 1983 while a student at the University of Washington. The game was not only an award-winning bestseller, but also a significant milestone that influenced many in the video game industry. Alexey Pajitnov, creator of Tetris, said of the game, “My favorite for many, many years. Every level was a real puzzle with its own mechanics, its own dynamics, its own kind of solution. … I can’t imagine any other game with such inventive and unusual design.” In a tribute to Smith after his death in 2014, US Gamer editor-in-chief Jeremy Parish commented, “[He] created one of the most innovative formative works of the medium, a game that managed to transcend international boundaries and become a beloved classic among American PC gamers and Japanese console fanatics alike.”
Cool game...wish someone would do this for Jumpman Junior also.
