Locoland, developed by Gromada in collaboration with ESDigital Games and published by the same, is a real-time strategy game that feels deliberately out of step with modern design, in both good and frustrating ways. Originally conceived in an earlier era of PC gaming, it carries forward a distinct identity shaped by experimentation rather than accessibility. Set in a colorful, slightly eccentric world populated by mechanical factions, the game immediately distinguishes itself through a central idea that is as restrictive as it is inventive: every unit is a train, and every action is bound to a rail network. This single design decision defines the entire experience. Instead of freely moving units across open terrain, players must build, manage, and exploit railway systems to maneuver their forces. Trains are not static units either, as they can be customized with different types of cars that alter their capabilities, allowing for combinations focused on combat, defense, or support. This creates a strategic layer where positioning and preparation matter just as much as direct confrontation. Planning routes, anticipating enemy movement, and ensuring efficient use of tracks become essential skills, turning what could have been a standard RTS into something far more methodical and constrained. The campaign leans heavily into this complexity, offering missions that often require precise execution rather than flexible problem-solving. Objectives typically revolve around capturing key locations, managing production lines, and coordinating attacks along fixed paths, all while dealing with an AI that can be surprisingly aggressive. The game does little to guide the player through its systems, which makes the early stages feel like a process of discovery through failure. This approach can be rewarding for those who enjoy learning through experimentation, but it can also be a barrier for players expecting clearer tutorials or a smoother difficulty curve. Visually, Locoland reflects its origins without attempting to modernize them. The graphics are dated, with simple models and limited animation, but the art direction carries a certain charm that helps the game maintain its identity. The environments are varied and imaginative, filled with mechanical structures and colorful landscapes that reinforce the game’s slightly whimsical tone. While it does not impress on a technical level, the visual style complements the unusual mechanics and helps create a cohesive atmosphere. Sound design is similarly understated, supporting the gameplay without drawing too much attention to itself. One of the more interesting aspects of the game is how it balances an easy-to-understand concept with demanding execution. The idea of controlling trains on rails is straightforward, but the way it integrates with resource management and combat creates a layered experience that requires careful thought. However, this design can also lead to rigidity. Many missions feel like they have a specific intended solution, and deviating from that path can result in repeated failure. This can make progress feel less like creative problem-solving and more like figuring out what the game expects from you. There are also limitations tied to its age and design philosophy. The interface lacks many of the conveniences players have come to expect from modern strategy games, and certain controls or systems can feel unintuitive. The absence of multiplayer reduces the overall longevity, leaving the campaign as the primary source of content. Once completed, the incentive to return largely depends on a player’s interest in refining strategies or revisiting challenges, rather than discovering new modes or experiences. Despite these issues, Locoland remains a distinctive entry in the RTS genre. Its commitment to a unique core mechanic gives it a personality that sets it apart from more conventional titles. While it may not appeal to everyone, particularly those accustomed to more flexible and user-friendly strategy games, it offers something genuinely different for players willing to engage with its constraints. In the end, Locoland is best appreciated as a niche experience that embraces both its strengths and its flaws. It does not try to smooth out its rough edges or conform to modern expectations, instead presenting itself as a challenging and unconventional take on real-time strategy. For players who enjoy experimentation and are willing to adapt to its limitations, it can provide a rewarding and memorable experience that stands apart from the genre’s more familiar offerings. Какая бы легендарная игра это не была бы, я (рандомный зумер) не могу поиграть в это переиздание, так как у меня она банально не запускается, а когда запустилась, я не смог играть, потому что игра не видит мышку.
This game could be better. Even though I got it cheap on sale it could use some real good improvements like map editor, better graphics, more cars ETC. Rating 3/10
