Reviews
A game i would not recommend for a variety of reasons, The audio is just not there, despite in the shop page it saying "full audio" there's barely any there, sound effects are missing, music has weird timing, the story is rather boring to start with, it has some kinda fun moments like in the mansions, it's essentially just a visual novel and a walking sim combined. The characters models in game and their concept art are often completely different, they don't even look like the same person. The game really overstays its welcome by dragging the ending on with a weird "JRPG" scene where you fight the end boss? and then it's just done awfully. it went from being an okay game to an absolutely rubbish mess. I would not even recommend this game even for free never mind on sale, the concept is cool with the camera but the game overall is such a drag, i'm really sad to write this review.
Even though I'd really like to recommend this, I just can't. This is essentially a short visual novel with very little gameplay. Pointing the camera around isn't very engaging and that's all you ever do. The story has some great moments and some of the jokes are great, but overall fails to deliver, the chosen graphics style is horrible and a game like this really should have full voice acting to spice things up. Unfortunately I can't recommend this which makes me very sad, since I like to support indie devs. I can only hope the next one will be better.
really want this game to be good but it just isn't. every npc has like 800 pages of dialog, the game is a press A simulator. i get what it's going for, and im glad i finished at least a little more of it, but it honestly feels like a chore to play. i really want to like it, it has a lot of potential
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1915589281 Nice art style, and the humor can be ok. But I don't know who this game is made for. The gameplay consists of looking at who is talking. That's it. So that may be fun for kids, but from the jokes it seems like it's made for an older audience. Also the gif on the steam page is a crazy misrepresentation, it led me to believe the "FPS" part in the description was something like a rail shooter, but using a camera instead of a gun. But I played for almost an hour, and there was no action, no nothing.. other than look at who is talking.
Wasted potential. The controls in the menu are old-fashioned and took some time to get used to. Furthermore, the audio is mostly lacking, while the visuals are decent, the 2D sprites during dialogues are more than irritating, as they often obstruct the view towards the characters, making it often difficult to actually see where you need to zoom in/out of. To the gameplay itself: It feels very raw and basic - unpolished even. Due to the inability of jumping, I got softlocked during the mansion mission and had to give up on that save file. This game also tries to be both a visual novel and a walking simulator, whereas so much more would've been possible with this specific art style and storyline. Quite disappointing. The characters often feel like they are walking either too fast or the player is simply too slow, making the "run here and there" type of missions painful to endure. During a 85% discount, this game can be a good waste of time for a day, but I wouldn't recommend buying it for the full price. If this game seems worth 9€ to you, you may as well consider donating that money to charity instead. However, I must admit there were some fun moments too, namely the raw humor and the dry jokes.
Local News with Cliff Rockslide is a comedic narrative adventure developed by Horsefly Games and published by Bonus Stage Publishing that transforms the mundane world of local television reporting into a playground for absurd mysteries and surreal humor. Rather than casting players as a heroic adventurer or detective, the game places them in the role of a cameraperson working alongside the eccentric news reporter Cliff Rockslide. This unusual premise immediately gives the game a unique identity, allowing it to explore bizarre events through the lens of local journalism while delivering a story filled with unexpected twists, strange characters, and delightfully ridiculous situations. The adventure takes place in Butterfly Valley, a small town that initially appears peaceful and uneventful. However, as players begin assisting Cliff with various news assignments, it quickly becomes clear that the town is hiding far more than ordinary local stories. Strange disappearances, mysterious cults, zombies, bizarre objects, and unexplained phenomena begin to emerge, turning what should be simple news coverage into an increasingly chaotic investigation. The contrast between the professional seriousness of news reporting and the absurd nature of the events being covered forms the foundation of the game's humor. One of the game's most original ideas is its commitment to the role of the camera operator. Players are not simply following the story; they are actively responsible for documenting it. The camera serves as both a storytelling device and a gameplay mechanic, encouraging players to frame scenes, follow important events, and capture the action as it unfolds. This perspective creates a refreshing change from traditional adventure games because players experience the narrative from the viewpoint of someone recording history rather than directly controlling every aspect of it. The writing is undoubtedly one of the game's strongest features. The humor embraces absurdity while maintaining a straight-faced delivery that enhances the comedic impact. Rather than relying exclusively on jokes or punchlines, much of the comedy comes from the increasingly ridiculous situations that are treated as though they are ordinary news stories. The result is a style of humor that feels natural and consistently entertaining. Every new assignment has the potential to introduce another bizarre mystery, ensuring that the narrative remains unpredictable throughout the journey. Cliff Rockslide himself serves as the centerpiece of much of the comedy. As a local celebrity reporter with an oversized personality, he approaches every situation with complete confidence regardless of how strange the circumstances become. His enthusiasm and dedication to journalism provide a constant source of entertainment, and his interactions with the residents of Butterfly Valley help bring the game's world to life. He is the type of character whose presence alone can make even routine conversations amusing. Butterfly Valley is more than just a backdrop for the story. The town feels like a carefully crafted setting filled with eccentric personalities and hidden secrets. Every corner seems to conceal another mystery waiting to be uncovered. What begins as a seemingly ordinary community gradually reveals layers of absurdity that make exploration consistently rewarding. The town's unusual inhabitants contribute significantly to the game's charm, creating a world where almost anything can happen. Gameplay combines several different styles to keep the experience engaging. Elements of point-and-click adventures, visual novels, exploration games, and interactive storytelling are blended together into a cohesive package. Players investigate locations, interact with characters, solve light puzzles, and participate in various activities related to their work as a news crew. This variety prevents the experience from becoming repetitive and allows the story to unfold through multiple forms of interaction rather than relying solely on dialogue. The inclusion of puzzles and minigames adds welcome diversity to the gameplay loop. These segments are generally designed to support the narrative rather than distract from it, helping players feel more involved in the unfolding events. While the challenges are not especially difficult, they provide enough interactivity to maintain engagement and give players a sense of participation in the investigation. Visually, the game embraces a colorful and stylized aesthetic that perfectly complements its comedic tone. Character designs are expressive, environments are filled with personality, and the overall presentation reinforces the quirky nature of the world. The graphics are not focused on realism but instead aim to create a memorable atmosphere that supports both the humor and the mystery. This artistic direction helps the game stand out among other narrative adventures. Another notable strength is the game's willingness to embrace unpredictability. The story rarely follows a conventional path, and players are frequently surprised by the directions events take. What begins as a simple local news assignment can quickly evolve into a confrontation with supernatural forces or an investigation into bizarre conspiracies. This constant escalation keeps the narrative fresh and encourages players to continue discovering what Butterfly Valley is hiding. The game's primary limitation is that its appeal depends heavily on its humor and storytelling. Players seeking deep mechanical systems, extensive character progression, or action-focused gameplay may find the experience relatively straightforward. However, those who enjoy narrative adventures, eccentric comedy, and unusual concepts are likely to appreciate the game's focused approach. It understands its strengths and concentrates on delivering an entertaining story rather than attempting to become something it is not. Local News with Cliff Rockslide succeeds because it embraces creativity and originality. Its unusual premise, memorable characters, camera-based gameplay, and consistently amusing writing combine to create an experience that feels genuinely different from most adventure games. By transforming local journalism into a gateway to surreal mysteries and comedic chaos, it offers players a charming and memorable journey through one of the strangest small towns in gaming. Rating: 6/10
Local News with Cliff Rockslide presents an intriguing concept, offering players the opportunity to step into the shoes of a small-town news reporter and investigate local mysteries. However, despite its potential, I cannot wholeheartedly recommend this game due to persistent technical issues, including frequent crashes. While playing Local News with Cliff Rockslide, I encountered numerous instances of crashes, which significantly disrupted my gaming experience and hampered my ability to fully immerse myself in the game. These crashes occurred at random intervals, often during crucial moments of gameplay, leading to frustration and disappointment. In addition to the technical issues, I found the overall gameplay experience to be lacking in depth and polish. The mechanics felt clunky and unrefined, with awkward controls and repetitive gameplay loops that quickly grew tiresome. Despite the game's intriguing premise, I couldn't shake the feeling that it failed to deliver on its potential, leaving me feeling underwhelmed and dissatisfied. Furthermore, while the concept of investigating local mysteries and reporting on them as a news reporter is intriguing, I found the execution to be lacking in creativity and engagement. The stories felt formulaic and predictable, lacking the depth and complexity needed to truly immerse players in the world of investigative journalism. In conclusion, while Local News with Cliff Rockslide shows promise with its unique concept, the presence of frequent crashes and lackluster gameplay ultimately detract from the overall experience. Until these technical issues are addressed and improvements are made to the gameplay mechanics and storytelling, I cannot in good conscience recommend this game to others.
Äänimaailma on ärsyttävä.
The game is interesting to say the least. The dialog can be funny but i'm very neutral about the game 5/10
