Crim's Humble Opinion Curator
I'm A Victim Of Circumstance
Life in Helsinki is a short visual novel about a girl named Lottie who graduates from law school and moves away from her home for a job and encounters a lot of obstacles along the way. The story is short and has charming characters that feel realistic. There isn't really much information about Helsinki; instead we get information about what the kind of every day life in an area of that size is like. The music is upbeat where it needs to be and fitting. I don't think decisions weigh too much because it seems like one of those stories that will turn out the same way regardless of your decisions. It may be my reading speed but the game felt pretty short. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1768165380
The Minor Gripes
I found the story to be interesting enough to hold me to playing it. I was really confused when I got sent back to the main menue after playing to the end of the first chapter. Chapter selection is nice if you want to replay a particular part of the story; but I feel it is more ideal to be able to save and load your progress and have it as a continual play instead of kicking you back to the main menu at the end of every chapter. Along with the feeling of the decisions not really changing the outcome of the story you also get a bit of an incomplete feeling with the end of the story. There are some issues but it kind of ends at a penultimate point in the drama leaving the reader curious about what happens next. It's like when The Sopranos ended in the mid.....

(っ◔◡◔)っ ♥ pros ♥
+Cute & Charming Characters/World +Fitting Soundtrack
(っ>▬<)っ x cons x
-Kicked to menu at end of each chapter -Feeling that the story is incomplete -Kind of short
It's a cute whimsical story with ups and downs. I personally prefer Doubleton Game Studios title Breacher Story. I enjoyed the story, world, and characters in this; but not as much as in that. I haven't seen any Doubleton Game Studio games on sale but that next big sale is always around the corner. This is an okay title end the end for me as it stands. I personally put their other game on a higher recommendation than this one. This is still enjoyable enough to warrant a recommendation though.
«Life In Helsinki»
A mini-visual novel about a girl whose big dreams clash with reality. Cute art, nice writing, but really short (I completed it in a lunch break). Also, the story isn't really finished. IMHO the title is a bit misleading, I was expecting a LOT more information on Helsinki, but hey, that's what Trip Advisor is for, innit?
This review is going to sound very negative, but I actually didn't mind this game. I can't pinpoint the playtime as I left it running, but I would say between 1-1.5hrs to read all 7 short chapters. I decided to get this even though I'd seen reviews saying it wasn't finished. Those reviews were right. This is more like a storyboard that's just started being fleshed out, but never got turned into a proper story. You have all the good events and the bad events, the problems and the solutions, but they just happen without any real bridging. Pros: - It made me laugh. Cons: - There were a few spelling/grammar mistakes, including mixing pronouns up. - I had the background music on for about 10 seconds before I was forced to turn it off to save my sanity. It's some sort of techno dance music that doesn't seem to fit or relate to the story at all. - It doesn't seem like there is a backlog option, and I also couldn't find a save button or a settings menu. - Clicking "return to menu" in the middle of the story will force you to start that chapter again. - The choices may not be worded correctly? Or the character just ignores them and does what she wants anyway. Eg.
I took the choice to get back on the train and go home, because I thought it would be a hilarious bad-ending, but instead she went to the park. Nothing at all about leaving Helsinki.
Other: - The characters don't seem very likeable, and they're really primed for drama. Which would be terrible in a long story, but quite entertaining for a short story. - My first thoughts: This girl is gonna get unalived. She doesn't seem sensible or responsible in the slightest. - I don't think the choices change the story, but they do give you a few lines of different dialogue at least. Overall, I'd be interested in reading more stories from this creator in the future.
Nothing in life worth having comes easy.
