A 12-year-old's take on 1984. It's a story driven game where the characters are bland, the plot is bad, and the gameplay is somehow worse. The graphic novel element isn't enough to hold this game above water.
I got this game for free and it was still too expensive
No hate to the devs. A cool concept that suffers from a low budget and unfinished story
LIBERATED, developed by Atomic Wolf in collaboration with L.INC and published by Walkabout and L.INC, is a bold experiment in interactive storytelling that merges graphic novel aesthetics with side-scrolling action gameplay. From the moment it begins, the game establishes its identity through a striking black-and-white comic book presentation. Rather than simply using cutscenes inspired by comics, LIBERATED structures its entire narrative as a playable graphic novel. Panels, speech bubbles, and page transitions are not decorative—they are the framework through which both story and gameplay unfold. This stylistic commitment gives the experience an immediate visual distinction and positions it as more than a conventional action title. Set in a dystopian near-future society dominated by surveillance and authoritarian control, LIBERATED explores themes of privacy, digital dependency, and the erosion of civil liberties. The world it portrays is one in which citizens willingly surrendered freedoms in exchange for convenience and security, only to find themselves living under pervasive monitoring. The story follows multiple perspectives within this fractured society, including members of an underground resistance movement and agents working to uphold the oppressive system. By presenting viewpoints from opposing sides, the narrative avoids simplistic moral binaries and instead invites reflection on the complex interplay between order and freedom. Gameplay takes the form of 2.5D side-scrolling sequences that combine shooting, stealth, light platforming, and occasional puzzle elements. Combat is straightforward and accessible, focusing on cover mechanics and basic firearm encounters. While these sequences deliver functional action, they are relatively simple compared to dedicated action-platformers. Enemy behaviors and environmental interactions are somewhat limited, which can make certain segments feel repetitive. However, the integration of gameplay within comic panels gives even routine encounters a cinematic quality. Transitioning from one frame to another feels like turning pages in a dynamic graphic novel, maintaining immersion even when mechanics are uncomplicated. One of the most notable strengths of LIBERATED is its visual and artistic design. The stark monochrome palette, accented occasionally by subtle shading and stylized highlights, evokes classic noir comics and modern graphic novels alike. Heavy shadows, bold outlines, and carefully composed panel layouts create a cohesive aesthetic that reinforces the game’s tone of tension and moral ambiguity. The seamless blending of narrative exposition and playable sequences within illustrated panels demonstrates a strong understanding of visual storytelling. Even moments of stillness—characters standing within a frame as dialogue unfolds—carry dramatic weight due to the deliberate framing and composition. Narratively, the game is structured into chapters that resemble serialized comic issues. This episodic pacing keeps the story focused and brisk. Rather than sprawling across dozens of hours, LIBERATED delivers a concise experience that emphasizes atmosphere and thematic exploration. While some players may wish for deeper character development or expanded world-building, the streamlined format mirrors the tight pacing of a limited-run graphic novel. The game’s commentary on surveillance culture and political polarization remains central throughout, providing a consistent thematic anchor. To accommodate different player preferences, LIBERATED includes a Reader mode, which reduces gameplay difficulty and allows players to concentrate more heavily on the narrative. This option highlights the developers’ recognition that the story and artistic vision are the primary draws. For players more interested in the sociopolitical themes and presentation than in mechanical challenge, this mode provides a smoother path through the experience. While LIBERATED’s gameplay mechanics may not rival those of high-budget action titles, its ambition lies in its form rather than its combat depth. The shooting and stealth systems function as vehicles for storytelling rather than as standalone showcases. This design choice can divide opinion—some may find the mechanics underdeveloped, while others may appreciate the cohesive integration of action within the comic format. Ultimately, the game’s identity rests on how successfully it fuses medium and message. In conclusion, LIBERATED stands as a distinctive fusion of interactive comic book storytelling and dystopian action gameplay. Its striking art direction, timely political themes, and inventive panel-based presentation create an experience that feels experimental yet purposeful. Though its mechanical depth may be limited, its artistic ambition and thematic resonance make it a noteworthy entry in narrative-driven indie games. For players interested in unconventional storytelling formats and thought-provoking cyberpunk narratives, LIBERATED offers a compelling journey through the pages of a playable graphic novel. 100% - 4.2 hrs Achievements - 18 Review - 5/10 - British Government Simulator The game has an interesting concept, the whole game takes place in the pages of a comic book, and the art style is really cool, looks similar to comic books. 6 separate stories following several characters with there own link to the main story. The story itself isn't terrible but its also not good, taking down a corrupt government. The downside is most of the game is sitting around and listening to the conversations and spamming your mouse to flip through the pages, there isn't really a lot of actual gameplay. Controls are so bad and the AI is a bit dumb at times. The voice acting is also a bit ♥♥♥♥ at times. The game itself is a bit boring, you literally just walk to the right the whole time shooting enemies, its too simple and repetitive. Because of the way the levels are designed you can at times have your view of the game blocked by objects in the foreground, this can be annoying when there's an enemy encounter happening and you can't see ♥♥♥♥.
