About
Letters of War is a heartfelt 2D adventure that tells a touching story of loss, courage and great love. Based on the true story of the developer's grandmother, the game invites you into the world of Liam, a British carpenter who volunteered to go to the front to protect his family.
Become a participant in the most important battles of the Western Front of World War II - from mainland Italy, the mountain passes of Monte Cassino to Sword Beach (Normandy) - and go all the way as a soldier of the 8th British Army, whose merits have never been covered in such detail. At home, little Rosie is waiting for you - Liam's daughter, to whom you promised to return and who copes with loneliness in the rear with the help of her father's letters and the support of her mother.

I thought the first 20 minutes of the game were okay, the narrative seemed decent enough and the backgrounds looked nice, but it completely falls apart during the gameplay parts. The game is polluted with bad mini-games that are generic, tedious, back to back, and often counterproductive to the mood and the pacing of the story. Conceptually the game maybe had a good idea, following a father going to war during WWII to protect his family, but there are just so many parts of gameplay that feel goofy, both in terms of gameplay and even some music choices, it's just a big lack of direction. There is no way this game was playtested, at least not the release version, there were too many issues for me to believe that someone finished it, you would be stuck in multiple locations with bugs or pathing issues. Well the bugs can be fixed, but I would think, if it's this bad, maybe you need to test your game more. I hate to nitpick voice acting in indie games, but it's just hit and miss the entire time, hard to take anything in the narrative seriously because of it. The few times the game goes for emotional moments it's always a miss, either because the music choice was odd and over the top, or the dialogue felt too casual. The game never really has any good puzzles, what it does have are linear interactions with zero depth, so simple I am not sure they add anything good to the experience. The sad thing is, like you had some pretty backgrounds, but you also had to do all the art for those action sections, and now the game looks half good, and half bad.
Pros:
(+) Some* parts of the game have nice backgrounds (+) It seemed some of the voice acting was okay, but overall, not great. (+) Had a decent enough set up for the narrative, the execution, horrible.
Feedback:
- the game mainly suffers from just bad direction, the narrative parts of the game like those with the family maybe could work if the entire game was like that, but every single mini game was so dull and generic, it only hurts the tension and pacing of the game. So if you take away anything from this, you have to pick your battles, do one thing right instead of failing or ruining the good parts of the game with the bad - the screen runs past the character in the snow rush. I assume I was meant to go up during plain rescue, is there a pathing issue? Could not finish the game, very buggy - there are a lot of very mismatched music choices for the depressing scenes, you need to be a little more subtle there Overall Thoughts: 4/10 The story parts with the family were okay, everything else was a complete disaster. Even if they fix the bugs, there is nothing here that I could justify buying the game for. Some parts of the game have nice art so I hope those people find more work. You have to realize where you strength is, if you just did a narrative game, maybe it would be okay, but all of the gameplay parts were just bad additions to the experience. I really enjoyed this indie game. The story was simple but very touching, and it kept me interested until the end. The visuals were beautiful, and I was surprised by how much detail was put into every scene. Even the small things, like the background or little objects, looked carefully made and added charm to the world. The music was also wonderful, creating the right mood and making the game feel alive. Together, the story, visuals, and soundtrack worked good. It was a relaxing and memorable expirience
Very good, cheap, nice and simple.
Got about a hour of playtime. If it's a first game of a small team the issues are completely understandable. However, my games budget is limited, so I can't spent on low quality games. The game is quite buggy, the animations are quite off and the writing feels amateurish. I can tell that the game is inspired by Valiant Hearts and your efforts to create a game in it's image are great, but I am sorry to say that I'd like a refund.
What I really liked about the game was its artwork—the characters look cute and full of life. There were several touching moments, especially the heroine’s reflections at the very end. I won’t spoil anything; it’s better if you experience the game yourself. It was also interesting to learn about World War II through the diary entries—such a great feature, I really enjoyed it.
A very sad game, I teared up a lot playing it. Maybe having my own family adds up. Yeah, the game has some bugs. Yeah, it's not completely polished. Yeah, it has a bit more work to be done. That doesn't change the fact it's a very touching graphics novel that deserves credit. Taking into account the current geopolitical situation, this story just keeps reocurring, no matter whose side you're on. Great job, guys! I enjoyed it a lot.
