[/strike]
Legendary Hoplite, developed by TripleBricksGames and published by Ravenage Games, is a captivating blend of tower defense mechanics and action RPG elements, set against the rich backdrop of Greek mythology. Players assume the role of Dio, a young commander entrusted with defending the city of Ithaca from relentless waves of mythical creatures and hostile tribes. The game’s narrative slowly unfolds as Dio uncovers the ancient forces stirring beneath the surface, weaving an engaging story that complements the intense combat and strategic gameplay. This fusion of myth and gameplay creates an immersive atmosphere that both fans of mythology and action strategy games can appreciate. The gameplay strikes a delicate balance between thoughtful planning and active engagement. Players are tasked with placing defenses strategically and summoning allies to hold off enemy advances, but they also directly participate in battles, wielding various weapons and godlike powers. This dual approach keeps the experience dynamic, requiring both quick reflexes and careful foresight. Progression is handled through an upgrade system that allows customization of Dio’s gear and abilities, offering a satisfying sense of growth and adaptation as challenges increase in difficulty. This depth encourages experimentation with different strategies, making each playthrough feel unique and rewarding. Visually, Legendary Hoplite draws heavily from classical Greek art, with detailed environments and character designs that echo the heroic style of ancient mythology. The levels are distinct from one another, featuring unique aesthetics that reflect the mythical themes and the dangers players face. Character animations are smooth and fluid, while the special effects for abilities add a vibrant flair to combat sequences, enhancing the overall immersion. The art style not only establishes a strong identity but also enriches the storytelling by visually tying the player’s journey to the mythic world. The audio design is another strong aspect, with an orchestral soundtrack that evokes the grandeur and epic scale of ancient Greek tales. The music underscores the tension and drama of battle, while crisp sound effects—like clashing swords and roaring beasts—bring the fight sequences to life. Voice acting adds further personality to the characters, though at times the delivery feels slightly rigid, which may momentarily pull players out of the experience. Nonetheless, the overall soundscape contributes significantly to the game’s atmospheric depth. From a technical standpoint, Legendary Hoplite is well-optimized across multiple platforms, including the Steam Deck, ensuring smooth performance for a wide audience. The user interface is clean and intuitive, guiding players through its complex systems without overwhelming them. However, some players have noted occasional bugs and glitches, particularly related to progression and level transitions. While these issues are not game-breaking, they can interrupt the otherwise fluid experience, indicating room for improvement in future patches. Replayability is strong due to the variety of difficulty settings and the expansive customization options available for gear and skills. This encourages players to revisit levels and try out different combinations, adding longevity to the game. The developers also offer a free prologue, allowing new players to sample the mechanics and style before fully committing, which is a thoughtful approach to onboarding. In summary, Legendary Hoplite delivers a compelling and fresh take on the action-strategy genre by marrying tower defense with action RPG combat within a vividly realized Greek mythological setting. It balances thoughtful strategy and engaging combat, wrapped in a beautiful art style and an evocative soundtrack. While it has minor technical flaws, its depth, narrative, and unique gameplay make it a worthy addition for gamers interested in mythology-inspired adventures and hybrid game mechanics. Rating: 6/10
Not Recommended The difficulty curve is way too steep for what is essentially just a single-player tower defense game. This isn’t Elden Ring or Black Myth: Wukong—there’s really no need to make it so exhausting. In particular, the gold cost for upgrades is far too high, and the number of character stat points you get is too few. Once you’re in a run, the energy cost for buildings is also excessive, and even upgraded buildings take so long to construct that by the time you’re finishing a run, you still can’t properly build them out. I get that you want players to grind for gear, but the drop rate is very low and the affixes/rolls on equipment are often terrible. How long exactly am I supposed to keep grinding?
The game was actually fun. I enjoyed it, even the inventory management is buggy on using controller. But I end up getting the stuck bug on NG+ that the stage didn't finish even all enemies are gone The game idea is not bad, but the game is so buggy. The UX is bad on controller even it's full controller support. The bugs that couldn't let player progress any further are critical, but no support from dev
As other reviews have said, from Chapter 2 onwards the balance gets screwed up and you just get frustrated with it. It's like they did the demo well and then it was just a rush to get it released without testing it or they grew to hate the players and got petty with the design, who knows. But, in their defense, if you like challenges, you'll love this because it does challenge the player - to keep playing.
Clunky controls, visually noisy screen that makes it so you can miss enemies, and grinding. No, I wont play the same level over and over to advance.
gg
the only types of "difficulty" in this game are either: 1) your numbers aint big enough 2) annoying mecanics
