An average tower defense game with rewarding upgrades.
Great art style, but unfortunately the game has nothing more to offer. Lack of content and frustrating execution of ideas which looked good on paper. In the end everything here is aboout paper.
There's one large problem I have with this game, and it's big enough to ruin whole experience. That problem is lack of any strategy and instead it's just about failing multiple times, in order to find out which towers and where you have to place, one by one, till the end. In late game you even have to upgrade everything in right order, or you'll simply fail. But this is not the only problem this game has. Predefined spots for towers are good, if the goal is to create simplified Tower Defense game, which might be a good one in the end. But in "War in a Box" most of tower spots is, more or less, surrounded by obstacles, and your towers keep attacking first enemy in a row, which is in their range, and sometimes they keep hitting a tree... forever. And there's nothing you can do about that, because it's impossible to select their target manually. Map is not flat, and height on which enemies move is changing, which is leading to bizarre situations where your towers keep shooting at targets below them, so they just can't hit them even once. On top of that physics in this game tend to be broken and in the end it feels like it's more about flipping a coin and pure luck luck sometimes, because there's many situations, where your tower miss in situation where it shouldn't. I had to restart same level tree times, everytime with same towers on same spots, only because at some point one of my towers was unable to hit target next to it. On top of that, there's only one mode and only 18 maps... and every single one feels the same and has the very same methodology of beating it - multiple failures in order to learn, then pure luck. This was promising little Tower Defense game at first, but after first two levels it turned into rather frustrating experience.

I simple enough tower defense game with little variety in the towers however it's cheap and is pleasant enough way to pass a few hours
It's a basic little tower defense game with a cute aesthetic. There are a handful of total turrets which can be upgraded twice and ~32 missions. There is an option to fast-forward up to 3x, but it seems to increase the chance of issues with the turret projectiles. The issue I have with it is that the projectiles from the turrets are inconsistent and can be deflected by the map and dead hulls of the enemies. The turrets will also frequently target enemies that they can't even hit, and there's no option to influence their behavior. Basically, the issues will force you to constantly restart the map until everything functions properly in order to get the stars you deserve, which is incredibly frustrating. You could do worse if you get it cheap, but if you're a completionist, there are a few achievements that will cause you considerable headache.
This game is a "tower defense" game, the "fixed path limited placement" variation. Title is too long to repeat, so I'll just call it PT (Paper Tanks). Graphics are simple, but done deliberately to look as if they are carved out of paper, so a bit charming. You can go pure overhead or zoom down to first person view from the turrets you're placing, and back up again. Other than these, this game pretty much delivers what's expected out of this genre, and nothing more, so this is a "maybe buy if you pay less than $5 USD" recommendation. PT is a "fixed path, limited placement" tower defense game, where the enemies comes into the play field via an entrance, follow a fixed path, and exit at a certain point. Along the way, there are some spaces for your turrets, You can only drop turrets at those specific spots, nowhere else. WHAT TYPE of turrets to drop, and when to upgrade or replace them, is up to you. Enemies come in two types: ground vs air. They have different paths through the battlefield. Some of your turrets are specialized against one type or the other, while others are dual purpose. For example, cannon is anti-ground only, flak is anti-air only, but heavy (machine gun) is dual-purpose. Problem with dual-purpose is... there's no way to prioritize targets, like shoot air targets first, then if there are no air targets, then shoot ground targets. Nope. If the turret is busy shooting at all the ground targets, then air targets may slip by, unmolested. So you do need those specialized weapons. They are generally more powerful anyway. You are generally given 10 "lives"... If 10 enemies made it to their exit(s), you lose. And you generally have 10 waves of enemies coming at you... each kill is worth 1 gold. Each turret costs X to place, then another X to upgrade. Most can be upgraded from level 1 (upgraded) to level 4 (fully upgraded). Selling a turret gives you a SMALL refund out of original purchase and upgrade price, so it's generally a bad idea. You get a "radar" and a timer so you know when the next wave is arriving. You can speed up the action by up to 3X with the cycling toggle (press to switch among 1x, 2x, and 3x). Certain enemies are more armored than others. You've given a rating at the end of each level to see how many lives you got left, and if you're not challenged enough there's an "expert mode". So there is a little replayability, but not a lot. Sound is adequate. So far, the towers are no surprise, and neither are the units. They are simplified somewhat, at least when compared to veterans like Fieldrunners, or even Siege of Centauri, Defense Grid, and so on. Gameplay is exactly what you'd expect out of this genre. Other than the cute presentation and ability to go into first-person mode at the turret (not the first, Commando Jack did it earlier) the game is otherwise a perfectly competent but average tower defense game with no other standout features. Thus, it gets the "maybe buy if less than $5USD" recommendation.
A rather casual tower defense game that is a bit too simplistic to be very enjoyable. Place a variety of towers along a predetermined route so that you can blow up various enemy vehicles before they make it through the level. Sounds like practically every Tower Defense game ever, and does little to add anything new.
I never thought I would complain about hitboxes in a TD game... yet here we are..
