It's a pretty fun way to hone your Japanese! The gameplay may appear to be simple but there is a layer of strategy and puzzle-solving revolving around figuring out how to take down each Yokai (what items, sequence of attack/defensive actions should be taken, etc). You'll need a couple runs to figure it out. And once you do and it clicks, you'll realize you've also learned some Japanese! The music, art style, and character designs add to the charm. The mnemonics in the study book are very helpful with learning the characters and vocabulary. This will be something I'll be adding to my language learning routine. For now I can't recommend the game. - No guiding story. You just battle your way through a grid of monsters. - There is no healing, so the monsters just wear you down. Even if you answer the quizzes perfectly, sometimes you don't have enough shield cards, or the monster poisons you. - It appears the monsters become successively stronger but you don't get sufficiently stronger to balance this out. - I suspended the game to return later, and when I returned the monsters became much more difficult. - The game has no mechanism to detect what you know: you have to manually select what you want to be quizzed on, and it asks you the same question that you already answered the last five times correctly. Suggestions for improvement: - Add a story. - Add healing. - Let the game quiz you to determine what it will need to teach you. - The game should keep track of what you have answered correctly and not ask this again for a while.
This game is actually pretty fun! I'm a complete beginner, and so far, I've found the methodology to be effective in remembering the different lessons. Sometimes it gets a bit repetitive, but I think that's what has helped me remember everything so far. Also, it's great that I can disable the vocabulary I feel I've already memorized. Some yokai are a bit too powerful and need some tweaking, as some of them take a long time to defeat. But overall, the game has been enjoyable to play so far. It has a good Japanese feel to it!
This is a decent system for using what are essentially flash cards. You customize what cards it gives you, organized in to difficulty levels going all the way down to simply learning kana. It's not going to replace Anki any time soon, but the novelty of playing a Slay the Spire type with an adorable art style makes it a worthy tool in your learning kit. Definitely better than competitors I've tried. I'd like to see better controller support, but it works good with a mouse.
Great alternative to Duolingo and similar apps to learn Japanese. Much more entertaining and fun. I love how you can add or remove new concepts to your "working set" as you prefer rather than having to do everything in a specific order or getting blocked at some point due to 1 specific concept you are having a hard time grasping. Here you can keep repeating that concept while you explore new ones.
i specially like how you can choose what to study and it doesn't even feel like study at all, it's just like playing a normal game. very cool concept, i recommend it to anyone who wants to learn japanese!
Deckbuilding and Learning! This could be huge!
As I started learning Japanese recently, I've been searching for games to help keep me focused while also practicing vocabulary and kanji. Across Steam, itch.io, and the Apple app store, this is the best game I've found yet! As a roguelike deckbuilder, it is rather barebones, but I'd be inclined to forgive this for any game in early access. The real star of the show though is an awesome, open system which allows you to choose what you want to practice, and hundreds of topics within hiragana, katakana, radicals and kanji, vocabulary, and grammar. Many of these have text blurbs with clever ways to help with memorization. Not to mention, the developer recently created a system for creating custom "decks" for studying more topics, which someone in the Discord even mentioned looking forward to use for learning Chinese! All of the basic concepts and vocabulary I've been learning on other apps, podcasts, and websites I've found in the game already, and I can activate or "snooze" the subjects to study what I want whenever I play. While I wouldn't recommend this as a primary resource for language-learning, I think it's an invaluable way to practice and study without having to cram info from classic study sources. Kudos lpares! I'm excited to see what comes next!
I was amazed at how quickly he memorized hiragana characters just because I was invested in the fights! A very nice balance between play and learning, I like that you can put some concepts to sleep once you feel you know them to keep pushing yourself to learn more. I would say that some aspects of combat still need some balancing, as some yokai had too much hp and the fight was too long (especially if you don't answer everything correctly every turn), but it also makes it a challenge, which I personally find key when it comes to doing multiple runs without it feeling too easy and boring. Recomended if you are starting to learn japanese and need a fun way to memorize and internalize new concepts.
Yuke and the Book of Yokai is a deck building game similar to Slay the Spire, where you collect cards and items to fight against numerous opponents in turn based combat. What makes this game unique, is that the battling is combined with quizzes that teach you the Japanese language. All the way from being able to read the different characters, to building a fundamental vocabulary and even getting a basic understanding of the grammar of the language. The game just released in Early Access, so everything is still a bit rough around the edges, but this does not hurt the gameplay in a major way. The core concept still works out and after some balancing everything out and maybe integrating the quizzes in some other creative ways I can see this game becoming a real hit in the future. Especially considering that the ability to import data from Anki and Excel is promised to come in the future, which would turn this game into a universal flash card learning tool, also suited for people who are not necessarily interested in learning Japanese.
