Out of all places, the strategy group I contribute to received a review key for Latte Stand Tycoon+ (LST). With others not showing much interest, I thought it'd be a relaxing game to dabble in, even though the summer heat makes coffee sound rather unappealing. Hopefully the game overcomes that bias.
Gameplay
Something I dislike about the game is how you are dumped into the center of town with little explanation as to how you should go about setting up your cafe. All you need to do is buy some ingredients, but none of the mechanics for serving coffee or satisfying the customers are explained. Every drink you make is comprised of three flavor profiles; coffee, milk, and spice. Whenever choosing what to put into the drink, each of those categories can only use a single ingredient. For instance, you can't blend two different kinds of coffee together. If you want a strength of three, you'd either serve three portions of a one strength roast or one portion of a three strength roast. You can't combine a one and two strength together. Ultimately, you want to match as closely as possible what flavor combination the customer wants, since that'll best satisfy them. Initially, that'll mean sending out multiple shots of weak coffee with however much milk and cinnamon they prefer. Each ingredient you can purchase has a price per unit, and will become more complex as you level up. Your starting options only impact a single flavor point, but as you unlock more ingredients, they'll taste stronger and cost more. Mixing the right flavors can be more complicated when dealing with ingredients that overlap, but they also yield more efficient profits. Unfortunately, that's pretty much the entirety of the game's complexity and interest. Aside from falling behind as customers line up, there's no rush in making drinks, and little worry about messing up unless you choose the wrong blend and need to adjust it. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3023674146
Controls
Although the game works with a controller, there's no options available to change them. Most of them work fine, but I question some of the choices made. For instance, pushing the Start button in order to complete each order, when there's plenty of unused buttons that'd work just as well. It's somewhat of an odd overlap while bringing up the options menu or quitting the game. The more annoying issue would probably be when shopping. In order to increase the amount effectively, you need to hold the up arrow instead of tapping it, as the game doesn't clearly distinguish between your inputs.
Story
It's certainly not original, with a grandfather passing away and leaving his beloved property behind to the next generation, but it's a safe route to go for this kind of game. Maya and Mia inherit their deceased grandfather's run-down cafe, and with limited support from a long-time friend, the mayor, they'll try and rekindle the former glory of the coffee shop. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3023186222
Visuals
Since you run a coffee shop, your store opens at a crisp 4:00 AM. This explains why the background scenery is so dark, but even as it lightens up during the day, the visuals of LST look somewhat muddled. I can generally tell what things are in the environment, yet not all elements show up with equal quality. For instance, when cars pass by with the glow of their lights, they look distinct and grab my attention. However, all the customers and NPCs don't even have a complete face, let alone show any emotions. With how limited the landscape is, as you can't leave this small part of town, I find these visuals lacking.
Sound Design
I didn't notice many songs in the game, but I was aware of at least two tunes. While I was playing, the first track was predominant, which would make sense as I spent most of my time in the coffee shop. The tune has a calm, mellow feel to it, and even somewhat has that safe, commercialized feel to it. Sort of like elevator music, giving the sense that somebody made as unoffensive a tune as possible. It was only during an event where I was provided with a canopy for a storm that I noticed the second tune. My impression was that it came about because of a scripted story event, but it did make for a nice change either way. Aside from a few beeps and boops from making drinks or shopping, there's few sound effects to speak of. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3023186496
Pros
🌟 LST released a couple of years ago, but according to other reviews and discussion board posts, was given a makeover and had some tweaks made to the gameplay. That's when it got the plus sign. 🌟 Even when your cafe isn't that popular, speeding up the gameplay makes it so that customers show up fairly often. You don't have to wait very long.
Cons
❌ Key elements of the gameplay aren't clearly explained. Sometimes, one cup of coffee will seemingly sell for significantly more than another. I don't know if it's because specific customers have exact matches that they tip generously for or some other factor. ❌ The first few days feel especially slow because your profit margins are so thin, yet you already have to keep up with your basic supplies, let alone more expensive versions that arise. It'll be a while before you can do anything else besides staying stocked up. ❌ The gameplay gets boring quickly.
Tips
🔍 It's helpful to have several portions of ingredients you use often, even if they don't sell for the maximum possible. That way you don't have to keep returning to the shop to restock. 🔍 I'd buy the cheapest shop or house upgrade as they're available. They all carry benefits, so it's not worthwhile not buying something you could for a more expensive one.
Final Thoughts
From my short time with LST, I find that there's a few key flaws that disrupt its potential. One is having to replenish supplies so often, let alone needing to slowly walk away from your store in order to do so. Not only does it break up the gameplay with a menial task, it also keeps undermining any advances you're making towards your financial goals. Routinely having to chip away at the money I'm making on basic supplies really doesn't put me into a better mood. The second and certainly greater problem is the gameplay mechanics themselves. Making and serving coffee is too basic to be that engaging or interesting. It didn't take me long to get bored of the process, selecting a combination of three ingredients to make the ideal drink for the customer. Feeling like the progress I'm making is constantly being reset, along with lackluster gameplay, combines into a very bad mix for holding my attention in the long-term. I can't think of many who'd find that motivating, so I wouldn't recommend LST. Latte Stand Tycoon + is apparently a "remake" of another game called Latte Stand Tycoon, but I couldn't find that anywhere so I'm not sure it ever existed. I kind of wish this didn't either. This Nintendo Switch game somehow got dumped on Steam (even though it looks more like a mobile app than anything else). It's from the serial offending shovelware pushers at Grab The Games, but it looks like they've been doing some account shell game stuff... and forgot to remove the "Grab The Games" splash screen on startup. That's a critical fail on trying to hide their identity there, but then again we shouldn't expect much from Grab The Games... barely one step above asset flippers at the lower rungs of the Steam shovelware pit. This is a pretty badly made tycoon game that seems to have been made by someone who doesn't understand tycoon games or only heard about them while getting drunk in a bar. Instead of a casual, mildy enjoyable "incrementer" style game where you outfit a cafe and handle customers and so on, you spend more time plodding to the store to buy ingredients, and making the coffee, rather than making interesting business decisions. This underperforms even mobile app tycoon games. There's an overwhelming amount of mediocre Visual Novel/E-book style cutscenes in this game. So you'll spend a huge amount of time not playing the game, but clicking through endless lines of poorly written VN text cutscenes because the developers couldn't work out how to relate their narrative through the game mechanics, and decided instead it would be better to compete with reading a book for your time. We're here to play games, not watch hours of garbage intersituals. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The game features lazy low-polygon "retro" assets with crap 2D retro pixel "art" textures on them, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the early 1990s. This very poor quality visual style is a method that lazy devs often use to disguise their lack of talent/interest in doing the graphics properly and trying to disguise it under the name of "art", or "We made it look bad on purpose", which really isn't something gamers should have to put up with. It's unclear why the developers weren't willing to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets and high resolution textures for the game. It looks bad as a result of their decisions, worse, it doesn't authentically recreate the 1990's vibe the developer is hoping people will accept instead of doing their job properly, and that's just another reason to avoid it. It goes back to that old adage I just made up, that is, if you know how to do 3D graphics properly, then do the 3D graphics properly, and if you don't, don't make video games because you're not qualified. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. Because this is designed for handheld/portable gaming appliances, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the low power handheld gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the mobile game developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for low power handhelds forces upon a game. While this might run well on a Steam Deck, we must remember the vast majority of gamers here are gaming on PC. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 5 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. Latte Stand Tycoon + has the almost comically optimistic (if it wasn't so sad) price of around $7 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam. For comparison, the $7 asking price for this game could get you games like the "Tomb Raider" remake, "Euro Truck Simulator 2" or "Portal 2". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this. There's also thousands of free, superior quality games on Steam.
Since I left a negative review on the original, it’s only fair that I take a look at the new version. And what can I say? After reaching day 21 (around 3 1/2 hours of playtime) I can confidently say it’s a definite improvement all around. My (and many others) biggest complain for the original was the missing challenge once you found all the recipes. This is no longer an issue since you design the latte for each individual customer which also minimizes the downtime. The challenge now becomes “which ingredients do I have” and “how can I make the priciest coffee out of them while still satisfying the customer” – and of course doing it under a bit of time pressure. Outside the café the question is all about managing your money and your available time (you physically walk everywhere). There are ton of upgrades to get, many ingredients to buy and even non-permanent upgrades (e.g. a couple of heaters to keep customers happy on a snowy day) to consider. I of course won’t hide that there are still a couple of issues. For example, the game doesn’t explain that much. But the devs are listening and are actively fixing all the issues and improve the experience. Its already way better than on release. So I’m confident that the few remaining open points will also be resolved soon. Another positive I wanted to mention was the overall look and sound of Latte Stand Tycoon+. The original was heavily pixelated and you couldn’t tell your coffee from your latte. The pixels are still there but its way more refined and at the same time the world feels more alive. Birds are chirping, butterflies roam around, people are walking about and cars are driving by all while a soothing soundtrack is playing in the background. Very nice. So if you want to channel your inner barista and brew coffee in a chilled but still challenging setting: Latte Stand Tycoon+ does finally hit the spot.
1/10 thought this would be like one of my favorite games, lemonade tycoon nothing like that. you slowly walk to the store and buy ingredients you slowly walk back to the other side of the screen and mix a new drink for every person until you run out of ingredients you slowly walk to your house and go to sleep... - awful UI - cant play with just mouse wasnt a total loss https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3174741993 into the hidden game abyss with you
There is a good game hidden somewhere, but I can't find it. It seems like an unfinished clone of the games like Recettear, Stardew Valley or Vallhalla.
Oyunda kahve dükkanınızı günler geçtikçe satış yaparak geliştiriyorsunuz. Aşırı sakin ve kafa dinlemelik bir oyun arıyorsanız Latte Stand Tycoon +'ı kesinlikle tavsiye ederim. Özellikle oyunu oynarken arkada podcast dinlemeyi sevenlerdenseniz mutlaka oyunu alın.
First off, I really enjoy business simulator games, but I did NOT enjoy LST. Bought this game in a bundle for $0.50, and even at that price it's not worth it. The game became monotonous almost immediately because all there is to do is choose between 3 flavor profiles made up of different ingredient types. Upgrading to a higher tier of ingredient (from cinnamon to cocoa) costs 2 coins more but only sells for 1 coin more in the finished drink effectively penalizing you for upgrading. I can't even begin to understand the thought process here. Presumably, there will be a more efficient use of ingredients later, but this is NOT the way to structure a business game. There are basic upgrades you can purchase, but with the gameplay so dreadfully boring, I can't be bothered to try to unlock them. I don't know. This game has the feel of an experiment that wants to see how long people will do a very mundane and boring task before quitting.
Latte Stand Tycoon + is a comforting game with a completely pleasant atmosphere. While playing, I could say that I felt a desire to live in the setting of this game; I found it very soothing and it exudes an immense sense of peace. It's a great option to play when you want to relax. The gameplay is simple, with easy commands, and the soundtrack is very pleasant and comforting. The performance is excellent, and its design is beautiful; the whole style of the game is really lovely. Your role here is to restore the family house and café, which is not an easy task, as you'll need to gather plenty of coins. However, the objective is clear and straightforward. You'll earn coins through the coffees you sell, and in the game, there's a combination system of ingredients and a customer satisfaction system. So, it's important to pay attention to this; sometimes combining an expensive ingredient with a cheaper one might not give you as many coins, but it can please your customer more. Knowing how the game works, I must say that my favorite part was precisely having to be attentive to managing my expenses well, having to carefully consider which ingredients to buy and which upgrades to take. All of this made the game really enjoyable for me. In the end, Latte Stand Tycoon + won me over not only with its beautiful setting and graphics but also with its peaceful and fun gameplay. I highly recommend it.
