I can not, in all good conscious, recommend this game. I really tried to give it a chance, but it is NO WHERE NEAR a complete game. I looked in the discussion, and I don't know if it was through demo, early access, beta testing, whatever... but there are several discussions about bugs from over a month ago that are still live in the game right now. Considering the game just released a couple of days ago, it seems as if the developer said, "eh, close enough" and chucked the game out there with a $15 price tag. Now, if this game was still in early access and maybe $5, I would totally understand. But, as it stands, it's not a good game. I unlocked a good chunk of characters and completed several runs in roughly 60 minutes. There are challenges (that are self imposed, albeit acknowledged by achievements) for doing runs with a solo character, but it just seems extremely tedious, considering the very first fight is AGAINST THE BOSS OF THE FIRST FLOOR. I don't know. I want to like the game because the idea of retro style JRPG mixed with roguelike map based pathing seems fun. But the whole thing is rough, rough, rough. **EDIT** I have decided to change my original response to a yes, I would recommend this game. I have been having some dialogue with the creator of this game, and he has been very open and accepting pointed feedback. Since my original review (1 hour or playtime) I have clocked in several additional hours, being sure to go in and check updates as they're pushed. The biggest reason I'm altering my original response to the game is because the dev actually listened. Not only listened, but acted on the things that he was able to change. That goes a long way in my book.
This core idea of this game is great. It’s an old-school JRPG style rogue lite. There are different classes with unique skills and passives. The Mets progression also seemed promising. But the game sadly feels incomplete. The game only has 3 acts and they all feel the same. The hardest act is actually act 1 because your party is fairly weak still. But if you can clear act 1 it was basically a guaranteed win. And the Meta progression quickly helps you get to a point where you reliably can clear act 1. Enemies artwork looks nice and is unique. But every fight feels the same. There are hardly mechanics to engage with. By the end of every run I’m not even using spells to make enemies weakened or vulnerable. I just hit attack and go basically. Your heroes unique skills also feel bland. You also need to essentially take a certain number of turns to use a skill. But by the time any of your heroes have taken enough turns to use a skill, the enemies are basically already dead. The items in the game are also one dimensional. You have basically nuker gear, tank gear, and support/mage gear. Theres no difficulty adjuster or reason to do a run over either. The meta progression just makes the game significantly easier because there’s no offsetting ascension difficulties. The only form of difficult slider there is would be taking less party members. You can have 4 max at a time. But there’s an achievement for beating a run with 3,2,and 1 heroes. All in all the game has a lot of potential. But charging $15 is a lot for this when this game is truthfully still a demo in terms of content. It looks like the dev is trying to add more in and add more content while taking feedback from players. That being said, its current state is still an expensive demo for a game that may get little to no updates in the future. I will be keeping the no recommendation on this review until I feel there is substantial enough content in the game to warrant the price they’re asking. It’s great that the dev is responsive, which makes me optimistic for improvements. But until those improvements are implemented I cannot recommend this game.
Throwback! Reminds me of the good old Super Nintendo days. I enjoy picking between and trying out different hero's gear and characteristics. The strategy of choosing the path to get to the final conquest adds interesting choices. I will be playing this for hours. After more hours of play I am enjoying his game even more.
I'm a big fan of these multi-path branching Rougelikes that seem to have been popping up over the last few years. Taking that and mixing it with a SNES JRPG art style sold me out of the gate. Game can be brutally hard when you start, but evens out pretty quickly after some upgrades. Pros: Great art style Fun Enemy Design Easy To Learn Cool Unlocks Cons: A little short for my taste (full achievements in about 2 hours of playtime) Not a lot of variety to bosses, or as far as I can tell secret bosses (or random bosses like Slay the Spire, for example) Some minor technical issues, but nothing a few patches can't fix Overall, I'm happy with it and can't wait to see what it can become with some updates, or what comes next from 30 Minute Games. Solid 7.5/10 for me. Great work.
meh, only looks like its fun
I really like to old school look and that is what intrigued me to purchase this game. Now I am glad I did because the idea of mixing jrpg and roguelike elements keeps me interested
Fun love letter to final fantasy 1 with some slay the spire DNA spliced in for good measure! The pixel art, both for the party characters and the enemies, is a big highlight. I particularly liked the design of some of the forest monsters made from trees and mushrooms. Combat system feels very classic FF with just enough of a wrinkle in the momentum system to keep things interesting. "Defend" command sometimes feels like an afterthought in old-school jrpgs but it's pretty essential here as it also builds momentum. Balance seems solid overall so far, though some abilities may be overtuned a bit (blue monk's Fists of Fury skill can get pretty insanely strong). The first few unlocks via the obelisk (Lastlore's meta-progression system) make a biiiiiiig difference so if you're getting wiped out early on, hang in there until you can unlock the 4th party slot and start runs with upgraded character slots! Team selection and the order you select them in have a big impact. As far as more critical feedback, I'd love to see controller support down the road, and I think a little more visual feedback on enemy attacks would be great - perhaps even just something like a text description of who the enemy is targeting and with what attack displaying in the UI space next to the party stats. The Obelisk progression was intuitive for me personally but I also play a lot of roguelikes, so something in-game to explain that mechanic (even just another page in the tutorial) would probably be a good idea. All in all it's a fun time and clearly a labor of love!
