https://youtu.be/DVHgh0py1mc Decades of progress have left this 1997 first person shooter behind in many facets from level design to combat mechanics. Even a dedicated fan of the original release will struggle to find long appeal.
A Doom clone. with some inavative features like room over room, ai partners, huge levels , be able to jump (in doom you cant) some creative weapons e the art of the intermissions are really good. the game did not age well. i has a lot of flaws. but it is fun and if you want to find all the weapon upgrades you need time and patience. i like it. give it a try. is not expensive.
I like the graphics style and feel of the game but the controls are nasty and I really couldn't understand the map very well. On top of that, something went wrong with the loading process and it was a really small window.
the zombies legs keep walking without torso funny maggots why is this recption mixed this game cool
Last Rites, originally developed by Ocean Software and later republished on Steam by Ziggurat Interactive, stands as a late-1990s first-person shooter that embodies both the ambition and rough edges of its era. Released during a time when the FPS genre was rapidly evolving beyond the foundations laid by Doom and Duke Nukem 3D, Last Rites attempted to blend sprite-based enemies, 3D environments, squad mechanics, and a grim zombie-apocalypse narrative into one cohesive package. The result is a game that feels historically significant, if uneven, offering a glimpse into transitional design philosophies within the genre. Set in a dystopian future where society has collapsed under the weight of a viral outbreak that turns humans into flesh-hungry undead, the story frames the player as part of an elite Special Forces unit deployed to contain and eliminate the threat. The narrative is delivered primarily through mission briefings and atmospheric text, establishing a bleak tone rather than focusing on character development. The world is depicted as crumbling and desperate, with abandoned cityscapes and infected facilities forming the backdrop for combat-heavy missions. While the storytelling remains minimal by modern standards, it effectively establishes a grim survivalist atmosphere. Gameplay follows a mission-based structure rather than a purely linear level progression. Each assignment tasks players with navigating large maps to complete objectives such as securing areas, rescuing survivors, or eliminating infected targets. Unlike many contemporaries that focused on solo heroics, Last Rites introduces AI-controlled squadmates who accompany the player into battle. This mechanic adds a layer of tactical consideration, as teammates can assist in firefights and influence the pace of engagements. However, their artificial intelligence is basic and sometimes unreliable, reflecting the technological limitations of the time. Their presence is conceptually ambitious but mechanically inconsistent. Combat embraces the hallmarks of mid-90s shooters: fast movement, sprite-based enemies rendered within 3D environments, and a range of futuristic weaponry designed to mow down waves of zombies. The gunplay is direct and immediate, emphasizing crowd control over precision marksmanship. Enemy behavior is straightforward, often charging directly at the player rather than employing advanced tactics. This simplicity contributes to a sense of relentless pressure, though it can also lead to repetitive encounters during extended missions. Level design is expansive but occasionally disorienting. Maps often feature labyrinthine corridors, industrial complexes, and outdoor segments connected through maze-like layouts. Exploration can feel rewarding when secrets or alternate routes are discovered, yet the lack of clear navigational aids may lead to frustration. The absence of modern conveniences such as dynamic objective markers means that players must rely on environmental memory and map awareness to progress. Visually, Last Rites reflects the late-DOS era aesthetic. Environments are constructed with early 3D geometry while enemies remain sprite-based, creating a hybrid presentation common to transitional FPS titles of the period. Textures and lighting effects feel dated today, yet they contribute to the retro horror ambiance. Dark hallways, industrial backdrops, and grim urban environments reinforce the game’s oppressive tone. The soundtrack and sound effects further emphasize tension, utilizing ambient audio and weapon feedback that heighten the sense of constant threat. As a modern re-release, the Steam version preserves the original experience with minimal alteration. While compatibility updates ensure functionality on contemporary systems, the core mechanics and design remain intact. This preservation approach makes Last Rites more of a historical artifact than a remastered reinvention. Players approaching it should expect the design sensibilities of its time rather than contemporary refinement. Ultimately, Last Rites occupies an interesting niche within FPS history. It showcases an era when developers experimented with blending squad mechanics and horror themes into the established shooter formula. While its AI limitations, repetitive enemy behavior, and sometimes confusing level layouts may challenge modern players, its atmosphere and retro intensity hold appeal for enthusiasts of classic PC shooters. For those interested in experiencing the transitional phase of late-90s FPS design, it offers both a playable relic and a reminder of how far the genre has evolved. Rating: 5/10
Its not horrible. There's entertainment to be had here if you like retro shooters. But the game gets very confusing. Maps feel like a maze.
This would be 1997's "Back 4 Blood" except with a single player campaign.
Wow! ...If this game had been on my radar as a youth, it may well have been the DOOM-killer for me. That is saying a lot. You are part of a 4-man team of sprite-based commandos, assaulting sprite-based nasties in a sprawling city of the living dead. following the zombie apocalypse of the future. Get it done, trooper. Runs beautifully out-of-the-box, with some undocumented key-commands to enhance gameplay: - Use (+/-) to modify FOV. - Use (F5) to toggle mouselook inversion. - Use (F3) to toggle headlamp.
