In A Nutshell
🔵 Pros + Good sci-fi setting with believable atmosphere and feeling to it. + Realistic environment and temperature simulation. + Some innovative twists to the sandbox crafting system contribute in keeping it fresh. + Promising crafting / base building system with potential to become extensively complex and deep. 🔴 Cons - Problems with object placement / usage of several items, just not working at times. - Crafting balance is quite off, with materials being too abundant most of the time, making the experience easy. - There is no current way to sleep / skip the night, when exploring is impossible due to extreme cold. Lamplight Station (LS) is an open-world survival sandbox set in a very distant future, where humankind already became a space-faring civilization, while mega-corporations built gargantuan space station housing millions of people. An unknown event happened on one of them, Lamplight Station, and as the sole survivor , the player will have to do everything in his power to make it out alive. After making it out of an escape module, the Survivor will find himself stranded in a huge, dozens of stories spanning, ice-cold dystopia, filled with ruined buildings, half-crazed maintenance drones, and even more sinister things to come. Survival is the basic priority, Hunger and Temperature come into play and have to be constantly monitored, while looking for food and other supplies in the ruined remains of the Station. Everything can be dismantled, harvested, recycled to gather resources, used then to build more useful machines such as crafting tables, recyclers, heaters to survive the cold, and even plantations to grow vegetables. Of course also clothing, usable items, armor, and a few weapons can be built with the proper materials. The crafting system is pretty traditional but also has some fresh elements, such as recycling, or creating molds for smithing, that keep it interesting. Overall i found Lamplight Station to be an interesting title, especially for the setting and the very promising ambient simulation it proposes. For now there isn't a lot of content to delve into, and just 4-6 hours are what you will mostly need to get every single item crafted, with little else to do around the Station, for now. Still, since the game updates are constant and progress is promising, I would definitely recommend keeping an eye on this title.
Liked this review, and want to see more of the same quality? Players can build their base anywhere in the world, but an enclosed locations is much preferable, as the game fully simulates heat dispersion and detects if a place is sheltered, partially open or fully open, this can lead to major temperature losses, which can be very dangerous especially at night. Dismantling existing buildings, doors and other building materials can prove useful in building a decent base, restructuring the ruined buildings around, or starting it from scratch. Heat management is also a mechanic: building pipes from the furnace to other parts of your base will diffuse heat, preventing freezing. Exploration in LS is quite interesting, as crates with loot are hidden everywhere, while certain types of materials can only be gained from specific types of buildings or zones. On top of this, there are also some lore files supposedly hidden around, but personally I managed to find none of them. The feeling of scavenging ruined buildings, in a truly sprawling architecture with buildings as tall as you can see, is really on point and one of the best I had from any sandbox in a good while. Crafting follows a traditional sandbox method, with crafting benches to access various blueprints. For now, only one bench is really useful, the basic one, while some others can be created but do not really have many blueprints or useful thing in them yet. The recycling mechanics, using blocks you find in the world or from enemies to extract materials is interesting. 📖 Story The only form of story right now is made up of the various lore pieces you find scattered throughout the station, and also some radio communications with a mysterious individual from time to time. Expect in any case an indirect storytelling, where players find out what happened from exploration. 👊 Combat System Very basic combat for now, hitting enemies the same way blocks are broken to harvest materials, no blocking, dodging or anything like that, also no ranged weapons, or throwables. 💰 Content & Pricing Currently priced at 11€, LS offers about 4-5 hours of gameplay to get to the bottom of each crafting tree and resource to find, the rest is just free exploration without much to do. Still, the quality of the content present now is quite good for an alpha, and a purchase is recommended if you want to support the development. 🔗 Balance & Challenge Right now, crafting and recycling give out a bit too much materials, making it quite easy to get everything quickly. Materials are not really "rare" either as you can find most of what you need right on the spot or at little distance. I did not encounter enemies that can actually kill you, so the environment is the only enemy for now.
Technical Analysis
🎥 Graphics Block-based graphics in a Minecraft fashion, but substantially detailed and full of decent textures and effects. The most impressive graphical feat are the miles high structures you can fully explore around the station, giving out a very good sci-fi feel. 🔊 Sound Good soundtrack and average effects, for being an Alpha, LS is on good levels. 🔩 Performance & Stability Solid 60FPS at 1080p, though higher resolutions may incur in performance drops as optimization is not yet done. [GTX1080, i7 4820K, 16GB RAM]. 💻 Artificial Intelligence N/A 🏠 Quality of Life Interface and menus are alright, without any major problems to note. 🐛 Bugs & Issues [Early Access]
Conclusion
Lamplight Station is a really promising early access sandbox title, with a dedicated developer and already a good foundation laid down. Keep an eye on this title for the future. This product was reviewed using a free key provided by the Developers.
Sci-fi crafting and survival game fresh into early access. Fully destructable environment that you can rebuild to aid your survival effort. Well worth a look for sci-fi fans and crafters alike. 8/10 https://steamcommunity.com/groups/Priority-One
The game is abandoned.
Buggy/illogical abandonware. Interesting concept.
Was interested in this game to be something, but after 5 years of silence, yes, this is a dead game. Abandoned.
Early Access - check 3 years no new - check Another survival sandbox crafting game - check No settings - check Poor UI - check = Abandonware. Avoid.
So far I have only played about 30 minutes of this game. For an EA game, it offers a lot. The Dev is quick to answer questions regarding the game. I feel that this game is going somewhere good and I plan to continue to play it. Great Work on the visual aspect of game play. Beautiful game map design. In game sounds are great. Please keep up the great work on this game One Room Games.
Cool idea. Seems abandoned. Shame.
It looks like a fun game. However it took almost 5 minutes to load into the menu, 10 to load into the game, and would freeze every 5 seconds or so once I got into the game. Maybe Ill try it again when its better optimized.
Developer Abandoned Game. Too bad, best wishes in his journey in life.
