Kingdoms and Castles is a city-building simulation game about growing a kingdom from a tiny hamlet to a sprawling city and imposing castle. Make trade agreements, alliance, and war with neighboring AI controlled kingdoms. Each villager and resource is individually simulated.

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 24 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 9 places towards #1, and the 2,419 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

8/10 - Bought on sale and worth it at a reduced price. However, game is now almost 10 years old but seems to have persistent bugs that have seemingly never been addressed. While the base game tolerates a lack of fish (oh, how you will come to loathe fish) as it shares a happiness modifier slot with Pork, which you can produce in copious amounts, the newer content (Dragon Taming) relies on a supply of fish in order to fully "bond" with a tamed dragon. No fish, no bond: no bond, no dragon ridng for you! Problem is, you won't be building the extensive and expenisve infrastructure needed in order to obtain, train and maintain dragons until a little later into the game, and by then your burgeoning population will be hogging what meagre fish stocks you can obtain from the badly broken fishing system or from buying from merchants. Fishing boats will drop off fish, you'll see a little number float up from the fishing hut to denote stocks deposited and... see current stock persists in saying 0/20 held. Even employing fishmongers to amplify your fish stocks seems to have little to no impact on what you're getting. And so if you want more than a few dragons, you're going to have to do your breeding / taming efforts before you grow too big or you just won't have the fish spare to do it. While your peasants are happy enough with pork alone, dragons are not. They need pork AND fish. Fussy buggers. However, other than the badly broken (infuriating) fishing system, game is mostly great fun unless you go for the harder settings in which case you may find it less so. Oddly, the game is happy enough to apply a natural death mechanic for your peasants (they grow old, die, or are killed doing their jobs - drowning, mining accidents, suicide provoked by lack of fish in fishing grounds teeming with fish - that sort of thing), but the poor wretches seem unable to reproduce on their own. No babies. Your only source of new peasants is immigration (so, not a game for the red hat wearing cellar dwellers and window lickers). Depending on how happy a place your realm is, and if you have living space to spare, you'll either get immigrants coming in to live, or they'll visit and leave if they don't like what they see. All-in-all a great game to sink time into, very satisfying. I would submit that game balance is a little off however, mostly when it comes to limited storage capacities and the fact EVERYTHING requires staffing, and that means you need more and more people and you never really have enough unless you turn off some buildings as a goodly number of your new citizens will go to staffing all the buildings you'll need to build along with new homes to make sure your citizens are happy. Of course, you're sure to forget that you turned off your hospital when a plague breaks out, or that you turned off your archer towers or ballista towers to get enough people to actually build something... right as the dragons and vikings attack. You get the idea? And of course, gold comes from taxation or selling things to the merchants that stop by. But again, you need to keep building more and more treasury buildings to increase how much gold you can store, and the amount is miserly so that's more peasants tied up manning each treasury building. The game is odd in that regard - trying to get enough spare workers that aren't needed to maintain all your buildings is a never ending struggle. And as there's no centralised control that you can use to turn things off and on... I found it easier to just leave most things on. This is vital for buildings like clinics and hospitals - if you're running the game at high speed and a plague breaks out and you have no medics to heal the ill then there will be deaths and if the corpses aren't qucikly buried, there's a chance of an even worse plague developing. Save a few bucks and get a few more workers or... watch all hell break loose. Up to you. TL,DR: Good game, some bugs (FISH, aaaargh!) and quirks but worth it when on sale. Not recommended at full price given age of product and bugged fishing system.
