Really fun I enjoy the combat in these games. They really amped up all the combat abilities you will be flying and bouncing off walls. The Disney rides are lame but you can turn them off to get form changes more often. The game is missing all the Final Fantasy characters which was a huge disappointment. Pirates, Toy Story , and Monster Inc were my favorite Disney worlds. I like the other games 1, 2 , Birth by Sleep and 358/2 and recommend playing these first and checking out videos for the other games before this one.
Short Review: As a lifelong Disney and Square Enix fan, I expected this to be a perfect match. Unfortunately, an overly complicated plot, long-winded cutscenes, and repetitive hack-and-slash gameplay wore on me over time. Simply, nothing about this game is motivating me to continue. Long Review: Kingdom Hearts III was my first entry into this franchise. I did my due diligence by watching recaps beforehand, so I felt I had a decent grasp of the story going in. While I could follow the plot, the story felt unnecessarily convoluted. This is common for Square Enix games—sometimes they stick the landing, and sometimes they don't. This time, they missed the mark. One of my biggest complaints is that many of the cutscenes are far too long, boring and pace-breaking. On the bright side, visiting the sights, sounds, and music of the various Disney worlds was nostalgic and fun. I'm not a fan of the hack-and-slash combat, but the sheer spectacle of the battles made the gameplay bearable. As a Final Fantasy fan, I appreciated the familiar naming for items and spells. It was nice automatically knowing what everything did. Ultimately, this game didn't feel special to me. While I might not have the full picture having only played some of this single entry, the series feels a bit overrated from this vantage point.
I have loved this series since game 1 on the PS2. The sound design, the characters, the gameplay. I don't even know where I would start in a review format, other than saying, give it a try yourself. I recommend playing with a controller, starting with the first game (It's on steam as 1.5 or something, the remakes have confusing names, sorry lol).
An overall worthy conclusion to the Dark Seekers Saga
Kingdom Hearts III is overall an excellent game and puts a good end to the Seeker and Darkness Saga. The story of Kingdom Hearts can be hard to follow, especially with it being spread between many games. The game provides you with short cutscenes in the options to catch up with most of the big events which took place so you aren't completely lost (even though you probably wil be to some extentl if you are invested in the story, but that's part of the charm of the series). If you have played 0.2 Birth By Sleep A Fragmentary Passage, the gameplay basically expands on that in a really well implemented way. Nostalgia for our old and unbalanced drive forms from KH2 could be felt but the new additions (switching keyblades midfight, formchanges, great magics etc...) compensate that with ease. The only addition I would recommend not using are attractions, they can be fun but they are so strong that it is not funny to me aside from the first couple of uses. Playing the DLC episode is mandatory, otherwise the end can be quite confusing and feel "rushed". The game appeals to all kinds of audience and players so feel free to play it the way you see fit, for regular gamers and long-time fans. I highly recommend to play in high difficulty modes, Proud or Critical, like I do for all games in the series. It is quite known (and a common meme) that Kingdom Hearts players just mash X to win with the occasional heal and playing in a higher difficulty will force you to actually be involved with the gameplay which is rich and has a lot of depth. That being said, if the player is a child or someone that is not really proficient with action RPGs, there is no shame in going for an easier experience just to go through the story at your pace. The DLC also allows you to enable advantage codes to further help you, even in the highest difficulties so you can never be stuck if you really don't want to. Kingdom Hearts IV has been getting some news recently and this game is teasing it really well with its secret endings. I highly recommend trying it out. If you've never played a Kingdom Hearts game before, please at least go through the other compilations available on Steam. The other games have aged well and you will have a much better time with the story this way. All of that being said, have fun, regardless of whether you are a casual enjoyer of the series or a fan of level 1 critical mode runs and may your heart be your guiding key.
