In all honesty, I have not, as of this writing, finished the main storyline yet. But I do have 50-some-odd hours logged for this game. In summary, I think it's a fun experience overall. But there are some issues, and they can make KCD a bit infuriating.
Gripes
1. Some foliage has rigid-body collision for some reason? Running into a bush is like running into a brick wall, which is both an annoying and baffling decision. 2. It's a CryEngine game. And it shows. At times, its performance doesn't align with its fidelity. I'm playing on a fairly modern build with an RTX 4060TI (16GB). For some reason, though, KCD occasionally crawls in situations where it really shouldn't. Especially for a game of its age. 3. The combat is finicky, sometimes to the point of frustration. Maybe that's because I use keyboard and mouse, but I don't really think that's a valid excuse for KCD, or really any game with that kind of problem. It is to the point where I get mad at HENRY for sucking more than I do at the game itself, because at times it really feels like he flat-out dismisses what I am telling him to do. Only on occasion does it feel like there is a rhyme or reason for who, in particular, Henry struggles with and who he doesn't. Maybe I just suck astronomically bad, but I don't think that's the issue.
Pros
1. I think the story is compelling, and while I presumably have a sizeable chunk of it left seeing as I spent most of my ~50 hours robbing people lol, I've yet to be bored of it. 2. It's fun getting up to all kinds of shenanigans (stealing stuff is not just a "walk in and take it" situation; I like that there is often a strategy to pulling off a stealthy heist). 3. This may seem a bit contradictory, but I think it's good that the protagonist can't just go in and demolish everyone with ease or do whatever he wants with no repercussions. As I said before though, there are some annoying moments in the game that do occasionally tempt me into giving in and using the developer console lol. But thus far, I've only done that once (for some hunting quest because half of the meat went bad enough that the guy wouldn't take it, thanks to me having to prance around the forest for 30+ minutes). 4. I'm a big fan of the music, reminds me a bit of The Witcher 3 (one of my favorite games). 5. It's a historical fiction RPG, no fantasy elements. It aims for realism, and I think that's a neat thing to see.
Minor Grievances
1. Even in 2026, there are still some bugs that can cause you grief. For example, guards can sometimes see what you are doing through the walls, which, taking into account the unforgiving save mechanic, can undo like 15 minutes of progress and leave you in a tart mood. I also fell through the world once, which was lame. 2. I am not the biggest fan of how saves work in KCD. I think it's an interesting idea, but that's under the expectation that things don't break. But things do break, and the player can be unfairly punished for it. 3. From my understanding, there are a few historical inaccuracies. I'm not a historian, so I will defer to them on that. But I did notice the oft-propagated fallacy that Christmas started as a pagan holiday. For context, the explanation usually given purports some kind of influence by the Cult of Sol Invictus (which really wasn't all that popular historically), but this idea is pure conjecture and lacks credibility. Doesn't take away from the game or anything. I just took note of it because I'm a nerd.
Conclusion
My review is a bit disjoint, but hopefully somewhat insightful. All in all, I would give it a 7/10. For this studio's first game and having been a Kickstarter project (if I recall correctly), it's definitely an achievement. I'd say it's a worthwhile purchase, especially with it being $5.99 as of me writing this, but if you could only choose between KCD and KCD2, I would go with the more polished KCD2. I am sure that many of the issues I had with KCD were dealt with in the second installment.
fun
This is one of the greatest immersive RPGs of all time! Allow yourself to spend time in this world, don't rush through your play sessions. You will be greatly rewarded!

HENRY'S COME TO SEE US!!
good game
some hours in the game and i cant help but feel frustrated all in all....this game has a nice concept, graphics, story, but lacks in some crucial aspects. The fighting mechanics are one of the worst i've ever seen, equip yourselves with a lot of patience. The save restriction, is yet again another stupid feature. Why don't you let me decide whether I want to abuse the save button or not? I wanted to like this game but it's a NoNo for me.
