King Lucas is yet another of literally thousands of 2D retro platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere (although, this one does have some low poly 3D backgrounds to supplement the 2D character assets). This is a console (Switch) ported, partially procedurally generated metroidvania, where each castle is randomly constructed of a number of bespoke, handmade rooms. Problematically this procgen works against the general metroidvania theme of the game. One important note is that even though this is an amateur project, it does seem to be sincerely and genuinely made. I couldn't find any flipped assets, plagiarism or any other kind of insincere actions from the developer, but unfortunately genuine intentions alone are not enough to produce a brilliant PC gaming experience. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. The game assets are far from bleeding edge, with lowish polygon counts and somewhat low resolution textures, making this look like it's at least 10 years old. It's unclear why the developers weren't able to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets for the game, and also irrelevant... what matters is that this looks poor in comparison to more professionally produced games as a result of their decisions. The controls and game handling are notably very clunky and unsmooth here. It's janky and unsatisfying to play... and any experienced gamer will tell you, the handling, responsiveness and general gameplay feel of the control scheme must be well polished for this kind of game to succeed. Unfortunately, this is something the developer seems to have phoned in, with little to no apparent gameplay testing. They dropped the ball on this one. Because this is designed for consoles, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the inferior console gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the console-centric developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for consoles forces upon a game. Once more, console peasants have made gaming worse for everyone. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. You don't have to take my word about how bad the game is, we can measure the interest in a game by how much people bothered to play it. King Lucas has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the game absolutely failed to capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for searching for a multiplayer game, trivial to achieve, but less than 6 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the game. That's a tiny, tiny proportion of gamers who even bothered with this. Ouch. Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this game was with players reveals a surprise... there's a very healthy spike in player counts for the game. But this isn't consistent with the achievement stats, that show less than 6 percent of players bothered playing the game for any reasonable amount of time. How is it possible for this game to have so many concurrent players who didn't bother engaging with this game? Trading cards. People will use card idling software to collect the cards and sell them, but this won't trigger any achievements in-game. That tells us people only really bought this game for trading cards, and that's a damning indictment of the woeful quality. A closer look at the numbers shows the game just has a couple of players every week running up the game and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many games like this, with no merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards. King Lucas has the laughable, eye-watering price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam.
На мой вкус игра показалась мне единообразной, но возможно, она найдет свою аудиторию =) Мне кажется ее не помешает доработать, добавить какой-нибудь динамики, несколько сюжетных линий, например.

Single player mode is nice. It has different rooms, weapons and monsters, it kinda challenging. But anyway game became more repetitive with every time I played it. Multiplayer could save this game because it has a really nice concept. Who will find the princess first will have prize fund. But unfortunately there's no players in it. You can invite your friends with game but I think it should be hard. Really positive sides of King Lucas are a little cute humour and great 2.5D graphics which make this price worthwhile. It has some small problems with localization but it's not so important.

You know, simple platformer with knight. Not bad but not good either.
King Lucas feels like the Developer wanted to make his own game for a long, long time and after playing Rogue Legacy he thought: "I can do this." Did he do it? In a way, yes. It's not as smooth and polished as Rogue Lgeacy, but there is a lot of heart in this game. I am interested in future games from this developer. **=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+** If you enjoy my short and sweet reviews, please follow our curator page here! We are the Indies of Curators!
There is something weird with the movement that doesn't make if feel like a finished game.

Very impressed by the way the devs handled a recent problem whereby on entering a room it froze and I couldn't load the level again. They replied to me quickly and worked on an update that solved the problem. Keep up the good work.
Скучная абсолютно однообразная игра, решили с друзьями поиграть в коопе хоть какой-то рогалик, тут же игроки телепортируются, у некоторых не отображаются враги, постоянные лаги, от рогалика только тэг и остался. Не рекомендую никому!
