Now on steam, the tags and info really do give the impression that the game is a Metroidvania but in fact, this could not be further from the truth. King Lucas sees you enter a castle that’s room number expands every time you enter and tasks you with finding someone or something lost in the castle. Levels are procedurally generated with a few things remaining constant such as the balconies on the left-hand side of the map, the consistent shape and the fact that the bottom of the map is always a pit with spikes. Immediately there is a few quality of life issues with the game that becomes apparent. As the game progresses and the maps become bigger you need to refer to the map increasingly more and more. This is a clunky task that could have been avoided by a simple minimap and the fact it is not included in the game is baffling. Equally, every time you go to the menu nothing is selected and you have to awkwardly nudge the controller to get anything to appear. An obvious bug but the kind that should not still be in the game. As you progress through the levels there are lots of locked doors and very few keys to open them. These generally serve as a way to skip parts of the level but as there are occasionally areas that you need a key to access in order to progress you find yourself not really using them just in case you need them later. Once you eventually find whoever you were sent to find you end up back outside the castle ready to do it again. As you travel you can upgrade your weapon and here in lies King Lucas’s weakest link… The weapons are all so short that you have to get so close to enemies that whether you hit them or they hit you largely becomes about luck rather than skill or timing. There are some other weapons that shoot projectiles but as everything in the game is consumable you soon find yourself back with your usual short sword resembling a rather sharp thimble in terms of reach. Visually the game looks lovely and everything is drawn and animated well and the soundtrack equally is decent so it is such a let-down that after only a few trips through the castle the thought of each level getting longer and longer each time filled me with dread. King Lucas isn’t a terrible game but isn’t great either and I feel could be vastly improved by some very small changes… Give us a minimap, increase the reach of the weapons and massively increase the durability of weapons. If you really like rogue likes then you may find something here but otherwise, there are so many decent indie games out at the moment King Lucas may very well get lost in the castle.
A game with potential, but as of right now I can't recommend it. Nice graphics and music. Controls fine. -Weapons have a VERY limited reach. Weapons and shields also break fairly quickly. -Biggest gripe- There's a huge lack of keys in the game. You will need a lot to get through certain areas and also for rescuing princesses since some will be behind a door (or multiple). In my most recent play through I found the 5th princess, but needed 3 keys but only had one. This led me to wandering about looking for a vendor or happening to find keys, (which by the way- I came across SEVEN blacksmiths- all in different rooms- none sold keys though.) On top of that you can only hold a few as your inventory has limited space. Also once you find a princess it doesnt get marked on your map either which is very annoying. -Music is nice but ALWAYS changes when you go to your map screen or your inventory. It should just play the level music throughout unless the game is paused. Sometimes after accessing the map or inventory screen, you'll go back to the game but there's no music and it wont start playing until some seconds later. -After you rescue a princess you get booted back to the very beginning. So you'll have to make your way alllllllllll through the castle again just to get to the area where the next princess is located. Plus everything you killed is still dead so you can't get more gold unless you risk taking an alternate route. -If you get hit by something there isn't a second or two of invulnerability. You'll just keep taking hits and then you're dead. Usually two or three hits and you're a gonner. -You can't upgrade yourself to take more hits, or make weapons or shields last longer. -When entering a new room I literally have to stop, wait and see if there are any spikes that pop up from the floor because there's nothing indicating that they are there. Kills the pacing a bit, (as well as when running, when you come to a complete stop when your character reaches the edge). -The amount of coins you get for rescuing princess starts out small and goes up in small increments. All in all it isn't much considering you must constantly buy new weapons, health potions, keys, shields and doesn't feel very rewarding. Not all enemies drop coins either. If the devs make some changes I may give it another go but who knows this could be abandonware being its currently 90% off. But we shall see.
The simplistic and shallow gameplay would be acceptable in a student project, but really isn't worth paying money for. You just wander from room to randomly arranged room until you find the princess, dealing with crappy combat and dull platforming along the way. Picking up a few coins to buy keys, health potions, and slightly less terrible weapons does not make this a Metroidvania either. Playing this multiplayer doesn't add much; the game plays almost identical to the single player, and there's no direct interaction with the other players. At most they'll kill a few enemies for you, or find the princess first, giving you the perfect excuse to stop playing.
Unfortunately this game doesnt offer much for its price tagg. It may be randomly generated, but your fun factor will stay at the same low point each time you play.
Pros:
+ the music is fitting + the artstyle is neat + controller support + randomly generated + a variety of enemies and traps + kid-friendly humor + online multiplayer + finding the princess is a challenge + purchasable gear, like weapons, shields, potions
Cons:
- gameplay is too easy, good enough for small kids, but boring for anybody else - although its randomly generated, its going to feel like the same thing all over very soon - no local multiplayer, which would have been the better choice - online multiplayer is dead - way too overpriced - the gameplay stays the same, the map just gets bigger each time you find a princess, not much fun - no immunity after getting hit, means you can get comboed to death real quick - it doesnt feel rewarding, you get gold for completing a map, but have to spend it all on the next one..... - nothing to unlock except for Steam achievments Overall the game is not the worst plattformer, but its so shallow and not fun to play, that I would highly recommend buying something else. This game is in the same price point as other great titles like Shantae and UnEpic, which are far superior games.
Much better than the average retro-platformer out there, but a bit more expensive, as well. Is it worth it? Well, from the aspect of quality, it is. Full controller support (steam or not), fully configurable keys (with the exception of dashing, which is a bit annoying), triple-os support (windows, linux, mac), nice and smooth looks, with an appealing pseudo-3D perpective that is not obvious from the screenshots. The sound ain't bad, too. As for the gameplay, it's not one more of the 'same', which is the common rule of most platformers. On the contrary, it introduces a few nice and simple ideas: for example, I like the idea of knowing exactly where my character is (using an open-world-map), and I love the "now replay on a larger map, continuing with same character" concept. It gives small moments of satisfaction without the need to finish the game at once. I also like its "rogue-like, but not unforgiving" philosophy. Common ideas are there, too, like the a-bit-of-rpg style, expressed with randomly placed merchants, different weapons, armor, etc. But they are finely executed, in a way that also makes the game differ. Random generated maps guarantee quite a different experience every time, making it endure in time. Unless, of course, you get bored with the entire concept, which I find quite unlikely, since you chose to play a platform game in first place. It's fun, with jokes that may not make you roll on the floor loughing, but will at least make you smile. Parodies of known videogame stereotypes (save the princess, again) add to the humour. The bad? Well, it has its minor flaws. Couch co-op would be nice, for starters. Hit-jump controls may seem a bit odd at first, so you may have to change the keys (I swapped them). For some, not checking your reflexes on every given time, is a cons. I personally like it easy (so I avoid the bloody wizards at all costs). For instance, I like not instantly dying in places where I expected to, like fire, or pits, but some may find it unchallenging. Overall, it's a nice, enjoyable game. Whether you feel it's worth its full price or wait for a discount, it's up to you, but I suggest playing it nonetheless.
King Lucas meets its mark as an exploration adventure set in a large world, but it lacks the polish and finesse that would make it truly shine out among others. I did complete all ten levels of the single player mode, and I'll admit that the challenge of navigating through such a large world was fun. The game provides a limited number of tools that, when used efficiently, allowed me to finish the game in about 8 hours of playtime. I like the novel twist on level design, with an evolving castle on a scale that reminded me of the maze from the World's Largest Dungeon pen and paper RPG. The dialogue presents the first challenge to seamless gameplay, with errors in grammar and syntax that appear to be more than just oversights in translation. The attempts at humor by the NPCs are cringeworthy, and not in a good way; cultural references are thrown in at odd places, and most of the jokes feel forced. Few of the NPCs have any relevance to the game itself, which at first leads to a lot of wasted time. Although the game provides a loose narrative that is slowly revealed through a few of these conversations, the story is inconsequential and provides little added value. Navigating the large world is the main challenge, with the rest of the game being extremely easy. Combat essentially reduces to button-mashing, with a few choices of weapons but little skill involved. The levels do become increasingly populated with enemies as the size of the castle increases, but none of these are difficult when compared to classic or modern games in the same genre. The music also leaves much to be desired and at times even sounds like it was procedurally generated. If you do play this, then I suggest muting the game in favor of your own soundtrack. Replayability is limited, as by level 10 I was noticing rooms start to repeat or look similar. Once you get the hang of the game, it's a lather-rinse-repeat strategy to complete each level. I was unable to try multiplayer mode, as no public games were available the few times I checked. King Lucas provides an innovative twist on procedural exploration games, but in the end it fails to live up to its Platonic ideal. I only recommend this game if you're a dedicated roguelike player with a compulsion to collect every last one.
Was expecting a gameplay and controls at least as polished as Rogue Legacy. I don't really care if the graphics are dull and childish, that is fine if the game itself is fun to play, but this game really doesn't feel like it's complete. The controls are very generic, the battles are all the same, your weapon stats is all that changes. The enemies are not hard. The only thing making the game 'hard' is it's damn bad physics.
