Kentucky Route Zero: PC Edition

Like reading a really good book (with a really good soundtrack) and when you finish it you kinda just have to sit there thinking about it.

Tries too hard to be deep and mysterious. I understand the arthouse theater sensibility, the atmospheric world-building, the commentary on rural America, all the things people are writing in their positive reviews. It's unique and at times genuinely magical. Some scenes surprised and captivated me. But I still couldn't get through it, yall🤷 Even fans of walking simulators and visual novels may find this emotionally inaccessible. It's the opposite of a grounding experience and keeps floating away the more you attempt to find meaning.

I've fallen in love again and again and again with this ... game? I'll say novel. Kentucky Route Zero has stood through the test of time with me, it has been nearly 10 years ago since I first played this game, and even today, I find myself finding new and inspiring aspects of the story, setting and worldbuilding from the smallest polygon my sleepy eyes could catch. In the different phases of my life as someone who would come out to say that they have gone through some tribulations they would not even wish on someone they hated, growing has only given me different eyes to this story, that this is a game not about what endings you could get, but what narratives you build. That said, this is ABSOLUTELY not a game for all. I have only found myself replaying the whole thing in times of complete depression, seeking anything in my 4 walls to tell me a story far from who I am, but close to what I aspire to stand for. So! If you don't have a knack for even just reading books in general, I'd say give this a pass, many other story-heavy games out there would definitely fulfill your cravings in the form of high stimulation and instant gratification. But if you're someone as big of an art hoe as I am, that A24 feels like pop culture to you, this is definitely a 200% recommend from me.
