Kamikaze Veggies is a hilarious adventure in which you control a group of soldiers who must stop the Red Communist forces from taking over the world. The funniest thing about all of this is that you are all vegetables of different kinds! Watch a snippet of gameplay here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyqwlgX44wI Your group of vegetable warriors must infiltrate behind enemy lines to complete various missions and disrupt the advance of the red communist army. But the survivability is very low, and these missions can be considered kamikaze missions. Therefore, you can sacrifice your expendable soldiers to achieve your goals. Enemy troops are better equipped and more dangerous, so only by using stealth and a good strategy will you be able to succeed. Kamikaze Veggies has colorful 3D graphics and offers challenging and fun gameplay. The game is played in third-person perspective and can be played with a friend in split-screen mode.

Kamikaze Veggies

I Thought Kamikaze Was Eminem's Album
When I got this game, I was scrolling through its Library Page. I stumbled upon an interesting update notice that showed the game’s old name. The game was called
Suicide Vegetables
(Trigger Warning cuz it’s 2022 💀). I think they changed the name due to the “Highlight” word being triggering to some people. It’s sad to see how freedom is slowly fading away. Anyways, jokes aside, the game introduces a new concept. Did they implement it correctly? Let’s find out together!
About This Game

Storyline
The storyline this game follows is absurd. You be the judge:
The game takes place thousands of years after the extinction of the human race due to the Greenhouse effect which ultimately made vegetables the “dominant” species. Unfortunately, they face a lot of struggles due to high temperatures, lack of water supplies, etc. The increasing sun rays exposures caused some vegetables to go bonkers. Joseph Pommodorov, once a friendly & loving tomato, went so crazy that he aimed to take over the world. He gathered all of the red vegetables to fight under him. He made an unstoppable force that forced all other vegetables to bend to his will. The only force able to put an end to his reign of terror are the Kamikaze Veggies, a group of strong heroes who are ready to put their life on the line to save everyone else. Will you be able to stop Joseph’s tyranny?
Yes, the story is weird & has no link to reality. But it is a pretty intriguing & fun story to follow. The gameplay is pretty fun & funny, so the storyline perfectly syncs with it!
Gameplay Mechanics
This game is a stealth strategic game where you have to plan your every move. So yeah, planning is literally your key to success. Some levels might take several attempts before you find out the perfect strategy to clear it. Oh, & be prepared to sacrifice a lot, that’s basically the main element of the game. The game was made on Unity Engine. The first thing that catches your eye when you start the game is the level selection screen. It’s not normal like other games, you are flying a cargo copter & you need to fly it over to the level you want to play. Such a minor addition adds so much appeal to the game. The first issue I encountered was the lack of the ability to rebind the default keybinds. You’re forced to play using the keybinds they give you. This is an issue for me since my keyboard lacks the “D” key. This basically limits my movement to Up, Left & Down. I usually rebind ‘D’ to the ‘F’ key in other games, but this game makes it impossible for me to do the same. I hope they include this basic feature in the game. However, I recommend playing the game using a gamepad/controller although this also has fixed keybinds. As of now, there are a total of 8 characters you can choose for your mission. Each character possesses a unique skill that will be helpful depending on the level. You start off with only the Carrotado who is basically a
suicide bomber
. Instead of exploding on the spot, they can launch themselves towards the target you aim for. Anyways, unlocking each character requires you to earn the necessary number of “Stars”. Each mission has a budget. You can take up to 8 characters per mission, but the count depends on how you spend the mission budget as each troop comes with a price tag. The overall gameplay requires a lot of thinking. This is something we, as gamers, don’t like to do. Anyways, you need to always strategize your next course of action. Stealth is your number one priority! Try your best not to get caught. Oh! And yes, you will be forced to sacrifice your characters most of the time. Make sure their sacrifice doesn’t go to waste. Whenever you get one of your characters killed, the next character will drop onto the spawn point. What makes it even better is that some parts of your fallen comrade can be used as an explosive, like the head of the Carrotado which explodes like a grenade upon impact. This is a very unique concept that I’ve never seen in any game. I really liked it, minus the thinking part. :( The game has 4 weapons & 1 character-specific skill. Out of these 4 weapons, 3 of them are throwable grenades while the 4th is a Land mine. How you use these is the deciding factor that tells whether you will complete the level or not. Each level has a lot of collectible “Treasures” scattered across the map. Collecting these treasures gives 100 points for each. You also get 100 points per kill & a massive 500 points for completing the level. The higher the score, the more stars you get. 3 stars are the maximum you can earn per level.
Visuals & Audio
The game uses a low poly art style. It’s very calm to our eyes & a visual pleasure. Sometimes, simplicity is all we need in games. What surprises me is that I feel this game isn’t well optimized. I barely get 40-50 FPS in a game that uses low poly assets. Like bro, I get the same FPS in Cyberpunk also Lol. It also overheats my laptop. The developers should try to optimize this game & make it so that it doesn’t turn my laptop into a ticking time bomb.
Pros

Unique gameplay concept.
Humor-infused storyline.
Pleasing low poly visuals.
Has quite a few levels for us to play.
The game can be replayed using a different approach for each level.
Vegetable Puns!

Cons

The game is poorly optimized.

Conclusion
If I am being honest, I lost interest in playing this game after a while. I am not a real big fan of Stealth Action. I always prefer taking the “Guns-Blazing” approach in any game. But to be fair, the effort put into this game is phenomenal. They wanted to make a unique game & they succeeded. I’ve personally not seen any game that’s similar to this, game-play wise at least. I do recommend giving this game a shot! It’s worth the base price but hey, who hates a sale? Reviewer: Midplayz If you were a fruit, you’d be a fineapple……& if you were a vegetable, you’d be a cutecumber! Thousands of years after the event, a new species has become the predominant one to walk on what was left of the planet earth. It’s the veggies, but due to extreme temperatures, some of the veggies have become nasty and eager for power. Joseph Pommodorov, the tomato, is one of them! He’s managed to brainwash all the red vegetables and turn them against the others. The only vegetables that stand up to him and his army are known as the Kamikaze Veggies! But to become a Kamikaze Veggie, you must get through thorough training and be ready to kiss your little veggie bottom goodbye if necessary! Only then will you become part of this unique group of soldiers known as the Kamikaze Veggies. Kamikaze Veggies is a third-person action/puzzle game developed and self-published by Red Limb Studio on the 8th of July 2022 on the Steam Platform. The game consists of a tutorial and 12 missions. After a fun introduction, your first goal is to become part of the Kamikaze Veggies group. This short tutorial will show you how to become the sour cream of the Kamikaze Veggies. When you are done, the real missions to get rid of Joseph Pommodorov will begin. I am smiling as I write this because each mission that I have played so far made me smile all the way through. So, each mission is ranked by three golden stars, based on a certain number of points you have to reach. If you achieve or surpass the highest points requirement, you’ll achieve three golden stars. All of the missions have specific targets to complete to move to the next one. You will also have puzzles to solve, but most of the ones that I have experienced so far are easy to figure out. Even so, the gameplay is really fun and addictive. At the start of each mission, you’ll be given a certain number of points that you can use. So, let’s say that you have 1000 points on hand; with these points, you can purchase eight different units. Bear in mind that when you start the game, you only have access to one main unit and one secondary unit. There are four main and four secondary units in this game and each one will unlock when you acquire a certain number of golden stars. The difference between the main and secondary units is that the secondary units have a timer and when it reaches one minute, they will explode. You can select up to eight units in total per mission. When you are satisfied with your selection, you can launch the mission. As mentioned, each mission will have a few objectives to complete. The main issue is that none of your units will spawn (or in this case, parachute) into the level with any weapons at their disposal. But don’t despair, you’ll find weapons such as grenades, mines, shovels and of course the ultimate attack . . . Kamikaze! All in all, this game is more stealth than action. And yes, you will use the kamikaze attack several times. For instance, it’s the only attack to destroy the main objective, and you will need to use it in other places that I’ll let you discover. I was quite surprised by the game for several reasons. First, the graphics are pretty good and the game runs very well. I loved the groovy 1970s surfing music (introduction only) and the game made me smile as I played each mission. It is well done, and the story is truly out of this world; really fun. Great price and worth every penny. You can play this game with your mouse and keyboard or with a gamepad. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t support Steam cloud, which is a bit of a shame. Positives: ~~~~~~~ + Fun graphics + Fun introduction in each mission + Good, short tutorial + 12 missions in total + Fun and addictive gameplay + Achievements Negatives: ~~~~~~~~ - No trading cards as yet - not many units to select from Humans are extinct and the veggies need to be saved! Enrol with the Kamikaze Veggies! 7/10 Key provided by the developer/publisher for review purposes. Any opinions expressed are entirely my own! Saw potential in it, however the game made me repeat the tutorial over and over again. Lost my patience and unnistalled.

My Experience I picked this up a while ago to play with a friend using Steam's Remote Play Together feature. We found the concept of the game to be amusing and appreciated it's visual style. After we got started, we were treated to a narrator doing a half-decent Morgan Freeman and a drill sergeant doing his best R. Lee Ermey. The way that Kamikaze Veggies plays is as follows: you'll first pick a mission, and then you're given the opportunity to purchase a number of uses of each of the characters you have unlocked. More powerful characters cost more of your mission budget. For instance, at the beginning of the game you only have access to the carrot character. For one of the first missions, you have enough mission budget to perhaps purchase three uses of the carrot character. You'll deploy with your first carrot and do as many of the mission objectives as you can before it is killed. Upon death, you'll spawn in as the second carrot you purchased. If you haven't completed the mission by the time your third carrot perishes, you'll fail. The second character I recall unlocking was the pea character. You can then alternate with your selections if you wish. For instance, first spawning in as a carrot, then a pea, then a carrot again. There are a few complicating factors here. First of all, you'll sometimes need to activate an ability that kills your character (usually creating an explosion) to progress in a level. This cuts down on how much leeway you have with your character lives in each level. However, in my experience, no matter what character you pick you're going to be relatively ineffective at dealing with the game's enemies. This means that you'll need to rely on stealth, and this system is not very good. Enemies seem to either be aware of you or not, without much in between. In addition, the physical layout of the levels makes it challenging to see if there is an enemy around the corner. You can find grenades from time to time to help you deal with enemies, but I didn't find these regularly enough to mitigate the aforementioned frustrations. For myself and my co-op partner, the game involved a lot of running away from enemies to reset their awareness and exclaiming, "I wish I would've known that we would need to blow this up. I would've picked our characters (or the order of our characters) differently." The biggest thing that would improve the game, in my opinion, is perhaps giving the players a drone that they can use to scout out the map before picking their characters or spawning in. What enemies are present, and in what layout? Where are the objectives, and will they require my vegetables to sacrifice themselves in order to complete them? Although I applaud developer Red Limb Studio for bringing something fresh into the gaming space, we only did a handful of missions before deciding to move on to something else.
