Don't buy, it's buggy, broken and dead Many game mechanics that show a lot of potential that are unfinished placeholder tags present and unchanged for 3 years no contact from the developer for three years If John comes back and finishes it I will rewrite but at the moment it is abandoned
A promising game, at least during the early game, but it is still very unfinished.
A really fun economic/resource management game, but unfinished, unbalanced and poorly optimized. No updates for 2 years, which is a shame.
Baaahahahaha. Why can you still buy this? For $30?
I do recommend trying out this game, but only if you can manage to see it as what it is - an unfinished game with an unfortunate production history. I knew this when I bought it, so I didn't expect much and was pleasently surprised. The game concept diverges quite a bit from the usual 4x strategy games, such as Civilization. Instead of focusing on an expanding empire with replacable units, you're managing unique units ("clans") that can level up and learn/switch to different jobs. Using these "clans" you can then harvest ressources, build structures, explore and fight. In this regard it's comparable to "Thea: The Awakening". At the Gates also brought back fond memories of "Seven Kingdoms: Ancient Adversaries", one of my all time favorite strategy games. I've played At the Gates for several hours and got my moneys worth. Unfortunately, it crashes repeatedly at the point of the game where I'm at (almost researched everything and quite late in the game). I've heard that others managed to beat the game though, so I might give it another try sometime.
I adore 4x games. I especially love any game that gives you a slow, methodical progression. At the Gates does that very well. You start out foraging, you build temporary structures, and eventually stone. Each step turns your nomad culture to a more settled and "civilized" society. Unfortunately, in my 18 hours of game play I rarely got the chance to try and reach advancement. The game is poorly optimized. It chugs horribly after the first year. My last attempt at a run lead to the game attempting to crash after every single turn, until it finally did due to low memory. I have 32GB of memory on this device, and should not suffer from out of memory errors on a 4x game. An unfortunately abandoned project. At the Gates has potential, but unfortunately it was heavily tarnished when I found it.
It was unfinished and unintuitive when I tried it seems to have been left a unfinished product. Stay away.
I have had a lot of fun with this.
