Once I completed the demo I was very excited to start the game. But sadly, I had then realized it was not a demo I completed but the enitre game. :(
There is an UPDATE to this review 12/02/16, which can be found at the bottom of this review, addressing some more things. Welp. For the record I paid £10 for this game, the store price is £15 but I recieved a humble bundle key from a friend who didn't have a Vive. I would like to start by saying that this isn't a BAD game, but it is VERY short. Writing this review I have beaten the main "story", which has taken me 77 minutes. There are 3 main levels and a training room. The game started with some poor impressions, as I went to turn it off because I forgot to change audio imput before starting the game and I needed to restart steam to get it to run again, though this could easily be a steam VR issue, when i started it up my left hand was on my right controller and vice versa. I then managed to lock my game up while learning the controls, as I opened the quick menu on the startup screen and accidentally pressed back to menu (This game doesn't require you to "click" the buttons, just touch them). After restarting my game AGAIN I get to the main menu. Now after the inital bad impressions I was pretty happy that they actually got Charon's actor to play Charon in the game, which was a nice plus. I went down to a training room for a pretty fun training mode, requiring you to look 360 degrees, duck from a minigun, catch and throw back grenades, fight enemies with "weak points" as well as enemies with shields(Which require you to shoot the legs then head) and hostages. My inital reaction was "Neat, there's some pretty good mechanics for a VR game here!" after beating the game I know there's no situation where you have to kill a hostage taker and I only saw 1 grenade thrown by the enemy through the entire experience. But the training room was very fun to play, however I needed to play it a few times to unlock some of the guns in the main game, which annoyed me slightly, as without doing the training first some guns are greyed out. Speaking of guns, the way they were implimented was really confusing, you have a pistol, smg, assualt rifle, shotgun and a sniper, with the least 2 getting one level each where you can use them besides the training area as far as I know. However they do allow you to hold guns with both hands, though I didn't notice any benefit to doing this, as guns with bolt action or pump action do this automatically anyway, the devs appear to have some decent gunplay here, where you *can* pump the shotgun after every shot and fire, but it does so automatically so what's the point? The levels are fun, nice shooting galleries where you have to look around and fight enemies off from all angles, they use some of the mechanics you saw in training, except for anything involving civilians, each level has a boss fight at the end and for the most part they're fun, but all fall under "shoot this spot". Level 2 had a mechanic where you could move your cover around, I really liked this as a concept and was hoping to see more of it, but it was dropped for the 3rd (and final) level. The music confiused me, most of it are tracks from the Payday 2 soundtrack, which makes sense due to Starbreeze being the publisher, I believe 80% of the tracks I heard were from Payday 2, whether they were Carl Noren's work or Simon Viklund's work. They both make great music, but it doesn't fit John Wick in my opinion and they were implemented poorly. Level 2 is a great example of this as they switch between 2 tracks back and forth throught the level, the level starts with Tick Tock, which is a classic Payday 2 song and then suddenly switched to Evil Eye (Which is one of my favourite tracks from Payday 2 honestly). I enjoy this track switch until it switches BACK to Tick Tock, leaving me confused as to why they'd change the track mid-level just because of the presence of a helicopter. Payday 2 has great music but I don't think it fit the style of Le Castle Vanias' score for John Wick, but I'm mostly confused as to why Starbreeze didn't just ask for Viklund or Noren to make some tracks for the game, as I don't think there was any more than 10 songs in the entire game. It was a great experience while it lasted, as I ducked to cover as a chopper fires a minigun at me and tried to shoot back from behind said cover, but it ended with me thinking "That was it?" if it's on a REALLY GOOD sale(£5-£10), pick it up, otherwise I don't think I can recommend this game unless you REALLY like John Wick (Which let's be fair, if you did you'd already own this game) In short (like this game ayyo): Nice voice acting from Charon and the main antagonist Enemies and fun to fight Bosses are fun Story is good Gunplay is good, but for those of you who want to play "realistically" with the guns the automatic actions may get on your nerves. The music doesn't really fit and changes suddenly for silly reasons The game itself is very short The pre-game instructions can trap you in a void ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ how did this make it into the game. UPDATE: So I played this game for a bit longer and did a second playthrough, and I have some new criticisms but also a few more positive things to say. So it turns out after you beat the game, you unlock a new mode called "simulation" as well as 2 new difficulties, Baba Yaga (Hard) and one other (I don't know what the default difficulty was because on my first run through the game I was forced into "Arcade" mode and a difficulty, but I don't know which one, possibly easy) Simulation allows you to reload weapons semi-realistically, with the only issue being that you cannot remove your magazine manually. This may not seem like an issue but all this means is that you can reload at any time with 0 downtime just by grabbing a new mag by your side and shoving it in the gun, which will automatically remove the old mag and reload the gun. As long as you have one hand at your hip ready to get a new mag, you can do an infinate amount of "tactical" reloads with no real penalty. (If you had to remove the mag first you'd at least have some time where you couldn't shoot (Or rather only shoot one bullet) I still appreciate this mode, whilst simultaniously I don't appreciate the lack of choice when i first booted up the game. One feature that's shockingly missing which I noticed was a "pause" function. I tried all the main things (steam overlay, going into the ingame options menu ect.) and nothing paused the game. This combined with the fact that there are NO checkpoints at any point during any of the levels (At least on Baba Yaga difficulty) means that you cannot just start a game and pause it if you need to go do something quickly. My playtime is somewhere around 4 hours currently, which is the result of the next run (Simulation, baba yaga difficulty) lasting 3 hours, due to things like grenades being outside of the play area and still doing damage (Very fair tbh) and boss kills late into the level meaning i had to restart from the start of the level. Without any major spoilers for the final boss, he has an explosive weapon. If you don't shoot him in an extremely small window of time, he'll fire it, causing massive damage to the point where if you peak from cover you'll die very quickly, and if you wait for your health to come back you'll get hit with another explosive. This is a very annoying mechianc because there are moments where you know you're ♥♥♥♥♥♥ because you don't instantly know where the boss is due to being shot at by at least 5 bad guys. For me to recommend this game, I think there needs to be "challenge maps" added. One of my friends asked me if there was a nightclub level in this game, to which I thought "No, why the hell isn't there one" which would be a good opportunity to have hostage taking enemies to add in the mechanic which the game trained you for then forgot about. Maybe even a bar level. If they add 2 or 3 challenge maps without making them £5 DLC, I'll 100% recommend this game.

Okay, lets be clear. This game is fun. the shooting is very polished, has great graphics, there is a story, and the soundtrack is good. For a VR title, its def worth playing however. the entire game can be beaten in less than 2 hour(if youre good, ive been stuck in level 2 cause i suck). but with that said. i've still had a ton of fun playing this game, and i highly recommend it at a sale price. it's still a very solid VR title so don't let the negative reviews fool you. just wait for it to go on sale for at least half the price.
If you bought this game, it's because you love John Wick. Clearly, you're going to want to love this game. Honestly, it could be great but it's a training level and three very short stages of a wave shooter. And you know what? The training level is the best of them. What are you really expecting from a John Wick game? You'd probably want to feel like John Wick. You really don't. John Wick is about badassedness, gunplay, and movement. You get gunplay. The game does its best to inspire movement. (There are a couple of moments where I was pretty much face down trying to get cover, but that was because the cover was inadequate.) I knew this was going to be a wave shooter going into it but there's literally nothing here that really conjures the source material. It's possible to finish this game in 25 minutes. For $20, that's insulting. Admittedly, the pistol play has me going back to the fun training level, grinding for #1 on the leaderboards, but this just wasn't enough content for that money. Maybe catch it on sale.
As a big fan of the mindless, over-the-top films, I was excited for this game. After it had gotten such negative reviews, I decided to wait until it was half off, figuring at that price even a mediocre shooter would be worth it. I was somehow wrong. Honestly, I'm not even sure if this is worth the $10 I got it for. At least it came with a copy of Payday 2. --- Performance is awful, had to turn all settings to low to even be playable (GTX 980 TI) Game crashes while in suite for second mission (Multiple times. I havent gotten past it.) No ability to recenter forces me to the edge of my playing space, pressing me against a real world wall to get into the elevator while the rest of my playing space is unused. Cant reach out to grab grenades in the training room as a result, either. If you're holding a gun with both hands, the gun is unable to tilt at all, which feels rather strange and throws off your aim, especially when you're trying to lean or shoot at an angle. Shotgun is trash, even at close range. So far I've seen no reason to use it. The SMG is useless to a lesser extent, too, as the rifle does everything the SMG can but with better accuracy. This may be an issue on my end, but my screen constantly goes to the default vive loading screen as the game struggles to load everything on time, completely breaking immersion and leaving me vulnurable in the game for a couple seconds at a time. Reloading the guns "realistically" feels weird, as there's no way to eject the magazine if it isn't empty. This means that the new mag clips through the old one for a second before it disappears. Speaking of reloading, the area that you have to grab to take another magazine from your hip seems to be directly tied to the height of your HMD. This means that if you're kneeling, you'll have a hard time trying to grab another magazine, as the game believes you need to reach through the floor to grab it. This seems to apply to arcade reloading, as well.
Reviewed using HTC Vive Pro
Arcade style shooter "Spray & Pray & OMG where's the cover 🚬 Or If your a true bad sss like Mr. Wick, he don't need 💩 cover that's for Girly Men like you - still not worth $19.99 🖕 I enjoyed and will replay this. Would love for others to have tried John Wick too. But Gosh Darn it this needs a permanent price reduction so not worth $19.99. Compared to the VR landscape out now days as say 1 year ago when this was released.
This is a fun VR game. It's an arcade style shooter. It has some honestly fun moments. The gun control is pretty good and has some great voice acting. I wish it was a little more immersive, i.e. I wish I could explore the hotel suite in more detail. I enjoyed it but it's a smaller game and from the trailers I expected a larger game. $20 is a little pricy for a movie advertising tool but they did a good job and I don't feel ripped off at all. Just know that this is a small port to help sell the film. However, it is fun to be John Wick, if only in a virtual world. :) Check out some of the game play in my video below. Thank you. https://youtu.be/ezHuyTkZH58
Let me preface this by saying that this game has the potential to be good with a few changes. And I say this as a HUGE John Wick fan. It needs to be fixed. I'm not recommending this game at $20 at this time due to the frustrating shortcomings. I sincerely wanted to enjoy this game. So lets start with the positives, the visuals are good, the continental lobby seems to have been recreated well. The menus are touch screen and responsive. With one exception stated later. You can reload from the hip and rack the action of the guns. This is very nice. This game is a wave shooter. The gameplay is ok at first. Now for my criticisms: There are no control customizations. You like the grip buttons? F*** you. You don't get to use them. There doesn't seem to be any movement outside of room scale. This comes to be a problem when a say a grenade lands near you outside the chaperone bounds. I punched my AV reciever quite hard and my hand is throbbing. Guns seem to have some RNGesus built in. They seem to be accurate at first but you can tell it's slightly randomized, which is WHOLLY frustrating. The whole point of aiming is control. The cover is too low. You'll probably trip on your cord hitting the deck. The sound is too freaking loud and the interface for turning down the sound is poor. The concierge is constantly blowing out your eardrums with low fidelity audio advice. The thermal scope on the sniper rifle won't allow you to see the weak points on the helicopter, so good luck killing it if you got that from an enemy, as the pistol, grenades and smg do jack against it. the sniper rifle often glitches to a barrel view because of how sensitive the scope distance is. grenade weight is wrong so good luck placeing those where you need to get them. Suggestions to fix in order to get a positive review out of me and most of these are, I think, pretty trivial.: Increase the scaling of cover so that taking a knee is sufficient. Implement touchpad movement inside the play area. I'm done punching things in real life. Take out the danmed rng from the guns. Turn down the default sound from your left ear. Make the sound adjustment menu a bar or something. Put some blood spray in there for hit cofirmation Fix the thermal scope issue. Put some control customization options in please.
It's an arcade-y wave-shooter at its heart that's only 3 levels long, but damn what a rush! Gunplay feels excellent and you can choose between three different difficulties. I imagine this game could easily be expanded with a few more levels and weapons. John Wick Chronicles is one of the more polished VR titles out there, and you should check it out as long as you don't mind paying premium for a short, but awesome experience. Graphics are very good for a VR title and I didn't notice any bugs or glitches at all. Only problem I had was a bit of a slowdown in the garage level. Not sure why, as the other levels were perfectly smooth with no lag or slowdown whatsoever. Also: You could also use this game to warm up before a workout, as the average gamer would probably be completely out of breath after a few rounds.
There are some cool things here, like being able to stand at the reception desk in the continental, and a not half bad target range, but everything else about this game is sloppy. The weapons feel unwieldy (a sin for a movie tie in for John Wick), the enemy AI looks like they're using stock animations, the elevator that takes you to places literally clips through you, and this has the horrible unreal engine 4 deferred renderer VR blur. If you've played low budget UE4 stand in place wave shooters before, this is just that, but with a John Wick coat of paint. A damn shame. But all is not lost. If you want to actually, "canonically" play as John Wick in a good game, go play Payday 2 VR. That game even has the signature H&K P30L in that game under the name "Contractor Pistol" and is a lot more fleshed out than JWC. Just because this game isn't worth your money doesn't mean that there aren't good John Wick-esque VR experiences out there. If you want a John Wick experience how you actually remember it from the films in terms of a raw combat system even though you're not gonna be fighting people with guns, I'd say your best bet is actually the Blade & Sorcery modding scene. That game lets you grab enemies, and there is a pistol mod and even a (♥♥♥♥♥♥♥) pencil that have been made by the community of that game. But man, JWC is not good, especially by VR standards in 2019. Listen to the reviews, because I didn't.
