Edit: I'm changing my opinion from negative to positive because the dev has really made very admirable efforts to update the game in the last few months and therefore exposing the hidden gem that this is. I returned to the game after these updates and was really pleasantly surprised and enjoyed the game to completion. The considerations and improvements that have been made are to be commended and this is now a great little product for shmup fans that also throws in some very novel ideas and great humour. I have left my original review in place below for comparison but rest assured the updates have resolved the frustrations I had with the game and I am even more interested to see what releases the dev applies their talents to next. As a massive R-Type fan, the trailer videos sold the game to me and it gave a great first impression for the first minute of play. It really did seem like a quality R-Type clone with a very posh lick of new paint. Sadly with each passing minute of my experiencing the product, my opinion took a nose dive. Of course , it's impressive what the dev has achieved solo and this game is so close to having the ingredients necessary to make it great. The game in it's current state and the current game play mechanics really betray what could be a fantastic little indie product. Hopefully future updates will rectify this and if they don't I'll still be inclined in taking an interest in what the dev comes up with in the future as this had a lot of promise. Furstrations: Dev update messages that pop up over menus so you can't access anything. Horizontal shooter levels with pop up enemies from nowhere and lifeless boss battles. Terrible top down, on foot shooter levels. At least make it twin stick. But.. With more development this is so close from being a disappointing title to an awesome one.

Some are very frustrating, usually due to control issues and a lack of balance. It has been a while since I have played one of these games, and when I received a Steam key for Jash, it tickled my fancy and I decided to give it a go! Jash is an arcade shoot’em up game developed and self-published by ChokdeeGame on the 24th of February, 2023, on the Steam platform. The game consists of a Story mode and a Survival mode. The Story mode has several levels, five boss fights, and a survival mode. At the time of writing this review, I have successfully beaten four of the bosses. However, I am struggling to pass the level where you have to follow the villain's vessel through a set of vertical and horizontal segments; the second segment is at high speed and you have to avoid projectiles from turrets as well as horizontal and vertical structures. It’s a tough level, for sure. Until then, I was doing well and am very pleased with what I experienced. The controls are good, but what impressed me most is the variety of levels, settings and opponents. You start in space, then the next level you’re in medieval Japan, then back to space and then somewhere in medieval Europe. Most levels are horizontal in the Story mode, with a couple of top-down shooter levels thrown in, where you control a character shooting at incoming robots while searching for a key to open the next door. I liked that, and a bit of change is always welcome. The level's length is average except for the top-down shooters, which are slightly longer to go through. As the game is a bit challenging on the normal level of difficulty, there are two autosaves per level, which are welcome. If you die, you’ll restart from the last autosave, which actually means restarting a new game. In each new game, you’ll have seven lives to spare whether you play on the normal or hard difficulty level. It will take you some time to clear a level, and you’ll be happy to restart a level from where you died the last time. After a while, you’ll figure out how the sequences of the enemy attack waves occur and how to place your vessel to counter and destroy them. The boss fights are pretty cool and quite difficult too. I particularly liked the Dragon fight; it was fun and took me quite a while to beat. In terms of your weaponry, your vessel can shoot a single projectile at first until you acquire the force weapon, which is usually quick and easy to acquire; you just have to shoot the floating blue capsule to acquire it. Then you can choose if you want this new equipment to be at your vessel's front or back. It’s important to know that the white glowing ball on the equipment is an effective shield when a projectile hits straight on it, but it would not shield the rest of the vessel structure. You can also propel the equipment toward enemies, which can be helpful at some stage, but your vessel will lose its shield until you reattach it. You also have two powerups: the beam and the hyper weapons. These powerups need to be charged before using them, and you have to wait for them to cool down before reusing them. Personally, I prefer the hyper over the beam as it shoots a wave of medium projectiles instead of one big one. The Survival mode is very different as it is presented as a top-down vertical arcade game, like 1943, but your plane is modern jet instead of a second world war plane. It's fun and super hectic. I swapped to Survival mode a few times when I was stuck on a level, just to refresh myself before returning to the Story mode. The developer also included a detailed tutorial you can access anytime. The graphics are good, and the game runs well. I like that we have variety and surprises in some levels, and the boss fights are challenging but fair. I need to go to Specsavers, get a new pair of glasses, and pass that final level! Positives: ~~~~~~~ + Nice graphics + Story and survival modes + A mix of vertical and horizontal variation within some levels (story) + Challenging but fair boss fights + Good tutorial + Fair price point + Achievements and trading cards Negatives: ~~~~~~~~ - Can be frustrating at times Jash is fun and provides good variations in some levels, with a few surprises too. 7/10 Key provided by the developer/publisher for review purposes. Any opinions expressed are entirely my own! Really fun and creative game. I like the survival mode because it makes the game more complete and fun. I also like the top-down shooter and various gameplays. Good music and ambiance. Good job dev!
Excellent game especially at the low asking price. Works perfectly on the XBOX One Pad. Another big plus point for me is it works flawlessly in Ultra Wide Screen mode on my LG Monitor at 3840x1600. This is a very high quality SHMUP. Just one small thing, I think your main ship is a little too large, if it was 10 to 15% smaller it would make the screen area feel larger.
An old-school shooter riddled with glitches and cheap attacks. The story isn't really necessary in these games, but it's still a pleasant touch. It is, however, not very good. Part of this is due to poor translation and amusing voiceovers with an accent. The controls will be familiar to the fans. Your ship has the ability to shoot, switch between two special attack, launch a super attack by holding down the attack button, and drop bombs. The only thing to watch out for is the gun, which might overheat when performing special attacks. An orb that can be attached to the front or back of the ship may help you. It will shoot bullets at an angle or straight forward depending on where it is placed. By picking the proper icon, all guns can be upgraded. The problem is the unfairness of the difficulty. Choosing easy or hard doesn't make much of a difference because opponent attacks remain similar; they just shoot more frequently and have more health. The majority of the enemy is weak and dies after a few hits, but so do you. One shot is all it takes to kill you. And because your ship is so large, evading multiple bullets at once is impossible. One of the last stages can't even be finished because you get hit no matter what. The problem is the enemy spawns out of thin air or clips right through the ground. You might be flying on the left side, thinking you’re safe, but then the enemy stars spawning right next to you. Of course, there’s no indication or warning this is going to happen. Difficulty is especially noticeable when bosses launch an attack without warning. They don't even give you the opportunity to move out of the way. For example, the first boss unleashes a massive laser that can only be avoided if you've played this before. It's not fun to lose lives simply to learn cheap attack patterns. Before each boss encounter, the game makes a checkpoint, so you don't have to restart the entire stage. Some of the issues are due to bugs and an apparent lack of polish. If we stick to the first stage, you can fly right into a boss and avoid all of its strikes during its first phase. After dealing enough damage, the boss suddenly gains textures that kill you on contact. Holding down while the stage loads causes the ship to fly below the playing area and disappear from the screen. This allows you to skip a large portion of the stage. You won't be able to activate the boss, however, because you can't fly back up. You should also be aware of another poor design choice: enemy bullets can pass through solid walls. The only way to have a chance at finishing the game is to turn on the health bar mode that was added much later. The last stage is impossible without this.
Not bad but not great either. One shot, you are dead. Yeah, I don't have much play time in this game and will invest into it later but my first impressions is that you can't see ennemy shots often. I wish there were some kind of talent tree too. Also, some kind of tutorial would be neat as it isn't explained much (different shots and why use them for example). Yes, it is a simple game and it has great backgrounds. For its price, worth buying it.
Awesome Shoot Em Up with detailed beautiful graphics, Smooth controls, Cool music. Similar to R-Type & quite challenging with lots of different enemies & Amazing Bosses each with unique attack modes. The weapon system is similar to the R-90 Ragnarok from R-Type 3. You have laser weapons which can be powered up by shooting an orb & collecting the power up & also a Charge Beam which can be charged twice for a more powerful shot and Hyper which are constant smaller beams that can cause lots of damage. The Force shield which can attach & detach from your ship that protects you from weaker enemy fire and can be used as a weapon and you can collect smart bomb orbs which will obliterate lots of alien scum!!. There is an avoid enemy obstacle stage where you are flying through space and the Run 'N Gun stages are very fun to play with simple controls. Highly recommend this game to fans of side scrolling shoot em ups or R-Type similar games. Well worth the price..Buy this game, Excellent work Sebastien, Both Thumbs UP!!!
