This is a tactical strategy game in which you are a mercenary leader fighting to regain control of the island of Metavira ✅Good camera controls ✅Ability to queue orders ✅Relatively good graphics for a game from 1994 ✅Lots of different items ✅Enjoyable soundtrack ✅Well-written characters ✅60 unique mercenaries ✅Side quest that can be completed in several ways, which is one of the biggest surprises for me for such an old game ✅Cool, atmospheric game set on the island of Metavira ❌The cost of this game is too high for a 31-year-old game; it's best to buy it on sale ❌Weak AI ❌Weak user interface ❌The mercenary development system is weak ✅✅ Verdict: [strike] Very Bad [/strike] , [strike] Bad [/strike], [strike] Decent [/strike], [b] Good [/b] , [strike] Very good [/strike], [strike] Excellent [/strike] ,[strike] Masterpiece [/strike] If you have any questions about my reviews, feel free to ask. This game is brutally difficult, but it's still great. Jagged Alliance is one of those games where even a hard-fought victory can still feel like a bad day. I know Jagged Alliance 2 from my childhood and can easily draw parallels between what made the game special back then and what still fascinates me about it today. Compared to its sequel, the game has a simplified gameplay style with less complex tactics or strategies, but it's incomparably more difficult. For those unfamiliar with Jagged Alliance: It's a turn-based tactical strategy game. It's not just a game that offers tactical combat, but also a mix of strategy, role-playing, and simulation. I think the role-playing aspect stands out the most here, because the unique selling point of this game is the individual personalities of the mercenaries. There's also a touch of dark humor mixed in. Some of the mercenaries are quite comical or clichéd, but very entertaining. It's fun to listen to their comments in different situations and experiment with which mercenary gets along with whom in the squad and who absolutely despises the others. But that charm is also what makes it difficult. It's not called "Jagged Alliance" for nothing, because if you put the team together wrong, you can make your life a living hell. If one mercenary doesn't like another, it's not uncommon for someone to "disappear" overnight and subsequently be reported missing. Or you might hand over too many valuable items to a greedy mercenary, and he'll take off with the goods and treat himself to a week's vacation with the proceeds. Of course, these are things you only really come to understand once you've played through the game several times. The game takes place on two levels: a kind of strategy and management system where you plan how to position guards or how to prepare individual mercenaries and their equipment for the day. And then there's the tactical combat. In combat, you target specific sectors and try to clear them of enemies and capture them. These are crucial to your efficiency, and this efficiency, in turn, determines how quickly you can snatch individual sectors right from under the opponent's nose. If one of your mercenaries is hit by a bullet, it's often a matter of weighing whether to continue and accept the consequences. Every wound must be treated as soon as possible during combat, before the mercenary loses too much blood. Every injury makes the mercenary less effective (fewer Action Points, lower stamina, and reduced speed). And in the worst-case scenario, he'll be out of action for 1–2 days because he needs medical treatment, simply because he let himself get hit. Jagged Alliance does something that was typical of the 90s and that's why so many people, including me, enjoyed it: It punishes mistakes. The game is not asking, "Did you win the battle?" but rather, "At what cost did you win it?" As a Jagged Alliance 2 veteran, I also had to start over a few times because I had to learn the mechanics the hard way. The path to beating the game is definitely not easy, its age is clearly evident and it can feel repetitive, as you find yourself repeating the same cycle of invading and capturing sectors day after day. I therefore can't recommend it to everyone, as today's expectations for games are significantly different. For fans of this series, however, it's definitely a must-play. Also worth noting: Jagged Alliance Gold comes bundled with the standalone expansion Daedly Games. It’s primarily a toolkit for creating your own missions, but it also includes a few small single-player challenges and a fairly linear campaign. Deadly Games improves upon the tactical systems of the first game, but replaces its long-term strategic appeal with a mission structure that’s often frustrating, where small mistakes become nearly impossible to recover from over time. I really did try it multiple times, experimenting with different approaches and attempting to optimize my strategy, but unfortunately, I had to give up in the end. Not a bad game though, but very unforgiving.
If someone would tell me 25 years ago when I was excited by Jagged Alliance 2 that in 2025 I will replay Jagged alliance 1 again I dont think I would believe it. Even less that it will be total blast.. It is true that Jagged alliance has excellent sequel (and 3 is not bad either after all..) but I was still amazed how well the original was really done, sure it is old, sure it has some technical flaws, sure it require read the manual (btw it is in game files, I can also highly suggested this official strategy guide https://www.moddb.com/downloads/ja1 but it stay excellent, all formulas works flawlessly, your team of mercenaries raise from greens to Rambo superiors.. atmosphere is super captivating and force you capture just 1 more sector and go sleep... Game keep you on toes with events that constantly threat your finance and operation and the fight stay challenging till very end - in opposite to trivial and disappointing ending of UFO/XCOM, Jagged alliance nailed it and at end are elite enemies that almost never miss and are same or even better equiped and trained than player team.. And when you finally get to main antagonist Lucas Santino he blow up whole base.. escaping it with covering shots against pursuing enemies stay most memorable strategy experience. It was absolute joy kick Santino ass again and I can only suggest it. Contrary to Steam usual habits, JA1 also come with Dosbox and automatic configuration so it is playable on any system without need to play with mods or configs.
Really impressive mechanics and AI. My playtime on Jagged Alliance was entirely on the first day, repeatedly killing friendlies and wondering why I was not progressing. After banging my head for a while, I decided to look up some playthroughs to learn how to play, since the game does not have a tutorial or any kind of help/information. This was the guy i found: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXt0heSNZlE&list=PLvqxe4XbcSiGwHuRfp9Nd4IH4VaBiNjxI I realized immediately this was not the game for me, but I could see the effort put into it and the richness and depth achieved. So many interesting systems and mechanics. Some of them were really surprising for the time. The AI also has some really unique interactions with reasonable thinking. The way the gameplay jumps from real-time to turn-based also felt ahead of its time. All the different management systems mixed characters full of personality, each with their own voice actor, produced another layer to an already interesting project. Graphics are good, with some really characteristic and charming cutscenes sprinkled in, and the soundtrack is also enjoyable.
It's a very old game. I've never played it, so I had to rely entirely on guides and YouTube walkthroughs. Overall, the mechanics are pretty good for the time. These days, new indie games sometimes have worse graphics.
A good old game that suffers from just being "OLD" af and a dysfunctional line of sight that will get your guys killed every time. I pondered reinstalling the game but...NAH!
playing it since i was a little child I never know that ctrl + f would skip a turn it could have been sooo easy in my early days instead it frustrated me so much but thats where the fun and grind starts for ya'll
Old but gold - and runs on DOSBOX.
