It's FF Mystic Quest without the charm and bangin' soundtrack, but with nothing new to show for it or any attempt at innovation beyond 1992.
I won this game in a giveaway, and was looking forward to playing it, however in the 25 minutes I tried to play, it crashed 3 times and there was an island in the town which you get stuck on after jumping on the log to get to it you can't come back and have to reload. looks cute though reminded me of an old school final fantasy mystic quest.. but alas it was not to be.. I'll keep an eye out for a patch and maybe try again someday.
Terribly coded. Incredibly buggy. Unplayable. Unfortunate, because I loved mystic quest
Not for me.
No auto save at any time, very inconvenient, making you physically save after every battle making the game un-relatable and no fun. Just constant battles.
Jacob's Quest Anniversary Edition is regrettably not as good as it could be, in its current form. Older builds of the game showed a much more sleak presentation and more consistent visual style. - Seemingly uses AI-generated graphics without any attribution on the Steam store page. - The graphics itself are a weird hodgepodge without any tonal or stylistic consistency, with sprites sizes varying way too much. - Despite working on a tile-based grid, the game now uses more "modern" backgrounds, resulting in a world that is confusing to navigate because the graphics do not match the allowed movement options. - Perspective issues in various locations. - Gameplay is extremely unbalanced, with both damage output and experience/gold varying so much between encounters that you might as well just save-scum until you get better RNG. Let's call a spade a spade: This is Mystic Quest Legend/Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. To me, that is reason enough to buy and play this game, because I really like MQL. Apart from the legal grey area (Square should really bring more from their back catalogue onto modern storefronts), the changes made to the game are questionable and the constant updates have turned what could otherwise be *the* way to play MQL into a painful car crash. Unfortunately the somewhat inconsistent, and often hard-to-parse graphics are not the biggest issue here. The game often crashes and some of the RNG is pretty out of whack, turning what used to be an RPG for beginners into a pretty unforgiving and RNG-laden affair. Controls are bad because elements have been streamlined from explicit button presses to event-driven things. You can no longer place bombs as you could in the SNES game, jumping is also contextual (and often leaves you in the wrong spot). Very sad. I have no idea what happened with this project over its considerable development length to end up in this form. I am, however, morbidly curious what game I will find in the upcoming DLC. And I mourn what we could have gotten: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJU3DtjISMc
EDIT: Jumping is Automatic Game still crashes everytime I exit the game How ever it is a fun game and I changed my review still a few bugs to work out and such but over all can be a exciting game to play
This is a great SNES era JRPG game. If you liked Final Fantasy Mystic Quest you will love this game. It has roughly 30 hours of game play in it. Has some nice nods to other SNES Final Fantasy games in it. After playing it front to back I would defiantly recommend it to you if you like this style of game.
Schade.
