Reviews
Not a day after leaving a negative review, the developer responded and fixed the few issues I had with the game that was keeping me from enjoying its content. That alone deserves a switch to positive, but the game itself is quite good on its own. Iron Decree is a spin on CoD Zombies with spells and swords as opposed to guns and knives. It's a very refreshing take on the genre, with resource management at the forefront of the gameplay loop. Melee kills replenish ranged charge, and ranged kills replenish melee. This makes for a very dynamic playstyle where you have to switch between melee and ranged often to maintain your resources. The maps are stylized but not exactly pretty. The developers intention is clear with the enviornment and interactable objects, and I believe that to be more important than having a good looking landscape. That said, some of the rooms look genuinely great, and most of the enemies are stylistically consistent with the enviornment. I am a big fan of the enemy variety, there are shield-wielding skeletons that can block melee damage and wizards that can shoot from range. There is a parry in the game that allows you to keep fighting while avoiding ranged damage, and it is satisfying to use. There are trinkets you can pick up every couple of rounds, which give you some small bonuses. While I like the idea of these as a roguelike enjoyer, the selection is very limited and there is no method of controlling the rng (rerolls, luck boosts, etc) so they end up feeling somewhat underbaked. While I did enjoy doing the quests there are a lot of steps that feel somewhat unclear, and I am not certain if I beat the quest or not because the final quest text stays on-screen even with no discernable objective on the map. It would also be nice if there was a reward for completing the quest (or maybe an easter egg with a reward) such as a wonder weapon. Last thing I'll add: I do hope that we get some sort of "wonder cantrip" in the future that we can roll from the weapon box. I believe the ceremonial dagger is this game's equivalent of a melee wonder weapon, but there doesn't seem to be something similar for ranged. I would also like to be able to upgrade the damage of cantrips with souls. Great game, thanks for fixing some of my issues with it!
Baseline, this game is fun but not complete at all. The assets are not great, the animations break, and the gameplay breaks. The weapons look to do different attacks, but are the same aside from range and speed. The magic is interesting, with two casting types and several spells, but the bought spells scale price too quickly and do not scale damage. The skeleton waves are by far more powerful than the bosses, and without specific upgrades to speed they can catch and lock you in place. The maps and objectives can break, stopping you from completing anything or progressing. In multiplayer, the maps can desync, causing elevators or doors to kill you on contact. Combine that with the amount of time a run can take, and it really isnt worth playing until, you know, it is playable. Not a real 1.0
Great fun! + Combat is simple but feels good and meaty. Swapping between magic and melee is cool. + The puzzels seemed vague at first, but felt good to solve. + First 2 maps are solid and a great start to mess around with. + Custom map suport is neat. - I didn't not like the Sewer map, too many long, thin, corridors that end in expensive doors with hard to find spells and even more expensive melee weapons hidden through out. - Sometimes the round change will happen while enemys are still alive, sometimes it'll take 30 seconds too find the final enemy to change the round. - The Flintlock kinda sucks compared to the crossbow.
