Iron Crypticle is essentially an improved version of Iron Fisticle (see my review here). Honestly not much has changed. For the most part gameplay, enemies, weapons, drops, and bosses are the same. Regardless, I still enjoyed playing it.
Positive:
- Map system is improved. The path you take actually matters (in comparison to Iron Fisticle) and you can plan ahead. - 4 player local co-op (instead of only 2 in Iron Fisticle) is a nice addition. - From what I could tell there was more variety with the bosses. Not much, but some. - They removed the permanent stat upgrade system from the first game. I feel like this improves the fluidity of the gameplay since you’re neither over- nor underpowered. Instead you unlock more weapons and ability drops as you progress the game.
Negative:
- Essentially the same game as Iron Fisticle. - Like Iron Fisticle, the game is fun for a short while but soon becomes overly repetitive.
Conclusion:
I like the Iron Fisticle/Crypticle games. They are both well-made twin shooters and evoke feelings of nostalgia. However, considering that they are both sold for the same price, I can only recommend getting Iron Crypticle. Still, at its full price I would not buy this game. Perhaps pick this one up when it is on sale.
TL;DR Iron Crypticle is an enhanced version of Iron Fisticle republished by a different company. I recommend getting this version since it supports up to four players and has more content.
Iron Crypticle is a fun local co-op, or single-player, arcade twin stick shooter. Buy upgrades and try to unlock all of the weapons. The music tracks are short and what you'd expect in this type of game. The firing sound effects aren't too annoying, which is nice in games where you're constantly firing. My favorite part is the increasingly difficult side-scrolling mini-game. The mini-game features randomly generated mazes with extra coins and hearts to earn. You can finish Iron Fisticle in 5-6 hours and it'll take another 6 to unlock the rest of the items.
I received this for owning Iron Fisticle. What a nice gesture! I loved the original and this is a lot of fun too. The pixel art in these games is great but let's be specific. Nobody talks about how good the food looks in this game. I get really hungry playing these games. If there was an award for the best looking pixel art food these games would win hands down. Especially the sausage, but it all looks delicious. The gameplay is still solid. This is my favorite sort of top down twin stick roguelite shooter. Plenty of perks and lots of numbers flying around. This is a great value for the finest gameplay and pixel art food around.
Iron Crypticle is okay. It's meant to be a bigger and better version of Iron Fisticle, and it is in some ways but I find it to be a bit less fun than the original game. The gameplay and feel is very very similar, nothing much has been changed there however they've removed perma upgrades which makes progressing through the game a bit more tedious because now the only way to improve is to unlock the more powerful weapons. Alongside this, It's a lot harder to find and buy temporary upgrades for yourself in this one so the game feels a lot harder as a result. A strength of Iron Fisticle was when you died you didn't really care because you bought those perma upgrades so you knew you'd make it further the next run but that's just not present here. There's more content, each level is much longer which I also dislike. I proffered whipping through each level quickly, here it drags a bit. Even though there's more content I actually got all the achievements much quicker than in Iron Fisticle as well. Idk man, it's not bad but I feel like this is both unnecessary and a more flawed experience than Iron Fisticle. Pick up the original instead.
I was ready to buy this but was pleasantly surprised to find it already waiting in my library since I owned Iron Fisticle. (I didn't check the "got it free" box because I paid for Fisticle.) Only played briefly in solo mode, but it's great. It achieves what all good retro games should stive for: it looks and plays as good *as you remember* your favorite old school games did (even though a lot of them actually sucked). Great mashup of Ghosts 'N Goblins, Robotron and Gauntlet. Look forward to trying some local multiplayer.
This is a sort of remaster, sort of "+" version of Iron Fisticle, but unfortunately, it's nowhere near as fun as the first game, so unless you need 4-player local co-op, just get Fisticle instead. It's the same sort of game as Fisticle: A "roguelite" twin-stick arcade game with combat similar to Smash TV and Gauntlet. There are level-ups that improve stats, upgrades that increase damage/speed/longevity, etc. There are special weapons, lots of enemies, various bosses, mini-games, etc. Start up, play through some various levels, kill some bosses, then die and start all over. Compared to Fisticle, the bosses are slightly redesigned (generally better), the weapons are slightly redesigned (generally worse), the enemies have been spruced up a bit (a bit more frustrating), and the overall dungeon layout has been changed up as well (shops and mini-games are significantly more rare now - worse). Some changes I like better, some I really don't. The main reason this is worse than Fisticle, though, is that there is almost no progress between games. In Fisticle, you could find and buy permanent upgrades that would make your character stronger for the next playthrough. In Crypticle, on the other hand, overall character levels and upgrades are entirely reset each time, with the only "progress" being different random weapons dropping - note I said "different", and not necessarily "better". The main effect of all that is that this game feels a lot slower. Don't get me wrong, the first few levels of Fisticle were easy once you got a few upgrades under your belt, but it was more fun. Moving faster, firing faster, and killing faster. In Cyrpticle, you never get past that "wow, I move/fire/kill so slow" phase because, well, you always will be weak and slow when you start a new game. In addition, sometimes RNG screws you out of upgrades, and you end up a practically-base-level character on floor 3, which makes some runs nothing but a complete waste. I can see what the developers were going for, and I imagine some players will love it, but I am vastly more annoyed than happy most of the time. "Where are all the upgrades!?", "where are all the item shops!?", "why did that skull enemy hit me 3 seconds after it was dead?", etc. This is still an enjoyable game for people out there who like the idea of a pseudo-roguelite, pseudo-twin-stick arcade game, I just think Fisticle is all-around a much more fun experience. Now please excuse me while I go play some more of that.
Get Iron Fisticle instead. This game is the same except they removed all the upgrades.
As a standalone game its not bad, but compared to Iron Fisticle it falls flat in an incredible amount of ways. Pros >4 player local coop >Few item redesigns and 3 new weapons >2 extra special rooms >2 new bosses (tho the last one is just unfair) and previous bosses now have variations >theres now a way to revive in multiplayer >score based levelling system that limits powerups (so now score is useful) Cons >There is a hilarious amount of projectile enemies with poorly visible bullets, and not to mention just badly designed enemies as well (slimes are projectile enemies that upon death split into 3 smaller ones, who explode into 3 paralytic bullets, making it impossible to fight them in close range, and also making it impossible to collect food, and then the rail turrets have been given insane movement and shot speed, making them a nightmare where ever they pop up) >The rooms are considerably larger and darker than in the previous game, which fricks with both the food combo and general item collection, since now you just have to pick one and let the other vapourise, and also with enemy readability, since most of them are in dark colors so the darkness is really not helping. >Shops and bonus rooms are now full rooms, which means that you have to sacrifice playing regular stages just to visit these. On top of that the bonus rooms give severely diminished treasure compared to Fisticle and vapourise all of ur reward if u die. It luckily allows retries, but in coop it basically means that if 1 person dies, you all have to intentionally die, or else he isnt getting money which he sorely needs. Also the shops are now only selling 4 items max, of which 1 is always hp, and then its random between stats, bonus, gems and iron fisticles/bombs, which means if ur running low on those, you are pretty much screwed, not to mention the crazy price increase compared to the first game and the diminished gold gain. >All the special rooms now play the same as regular rooms but with diffirent enemy pools (1st game has hunting 1 prespawned wave of skeletons in catacombs and then breaking pots in graveyard, here its just kill all waves of enemies which is lame). There is also no real choice to be made about going in these, since they are vastly easier than default stages and give better rewards, so getting a map and then going thru as many specials as possible is the game plan which is boring. >Scrolls are a baffling addition since they are mostly items from fisticle that you could get out of golden chests, but now they are rare bomb-like items you can only find in special rooms (except infestation that is), making them extremely situational (not to mention Torpor/time stop has been nerfed so hard from Fisticle that its just useless) >Permanent upgrades are now gone, which means that casuals will have to sweat like crazy to beat easy mode, if they even understand the food to lvl mechanic at all. >The gems have been made substantially more boring, since instead of giving you a weapon to annihilate the whole room whilst retaining food for stat maxxing purposes, its just another version of bonus that gives a rather useless barrier and thats it. >Control settings are suprisingly lackluster, in fisticle you could do 2p keyboard, but here you must have ps4/xbox controllers that you cannot even configure in the game, meaning if you dont like the control scheme you can go dig a ditch. >Fisticle had (imo) has 3 gameplay options - newgame to first loop with permanent upgrades for full completion to the casual audience, loops in newgame which challenged even the seasoned players, and challenge for a quick rougelike experience. Comparably Cripticle has essentially 2 diffirent version of challenge (newgame and newgame+) since they play exactly like it, and endless mode which just locks you in a room and sends enemies at you which is incredibly lazy compared to the loop. TL;DR - buy only if you want Iron Fisticle with 4p coop and you have modern controllers, otherwise dont bother.
