The most random ass port to Steam I've ever seen. Super nostalgic, but it was never a great game to begin with. Port is super duper barebones. No options or filters or resolution options. Just straight up GBA port stretched out to whatever your current resolution is. Not bad buying both 1 and 2 on sale though for some nostalgia kicks.
My first review, had to hit this, because I love this game despite its brevity and flaws. Pros:

Neat graphics for their time and place
Great soundtrack
Simple gameplay
Seven pretty cool levels
Three savestates alongside the old passwords
Cons:

Short and simplistic
Iffy hitboxes at times
Nothing new to replay for
Sharp difficulty increase on later levels
Giant pixels look like a field of static
Slowdown on levels 3 and 4
To be fair, I can't test that slowdown against the original, as I no longer own a Gameboy Advance, but yeah. On a Ryzen 5 2600, with 16GB RAM and an 8GB RX 580, there is slowdown on an emulated GBA game. VERDICT: Wait for sale if you're a fan of shmups/retro. Everyone else probably need not apply. WE NEED A NEUTRAL VOTE, VALVE!
I honestly never expected to see this game on steam. Iridion 3D is one of my favorite games of all time. The game is a launch title for the Game Boy Advance, which is something to keep in mind about this game. The game uses a pseudo 3D effect in order to create a unique Shmup game that i have never seen an attempt to replicate the style of. While the pseudo 3D style can be very akward at first, if you are able to adapt, the game is a very fun, while short game. While some may feel the fact the game is short is a flaw, i find it adds to the ease of picking up the game for a quick playthrough. As a launch title for the GBA, the game has some audio oddities, along with issues due to developers still learning the limitations of the platform. all in all, if you can get past the flaws and get used to the pseudo 3D style, it is a very fun game.
As an owner of the original game, this has insufferably bad emulation problems when it starts getting heavy on sprites. Whatever emulator they're using, it's ancient and incapable code that doesn't know how to run the things it's being tasked to. For those who don't know, this is a GBA game. This 2020 release adds pretty much nothing except for save states (which don't even have an assigned button to a controller, only being accessible by the escape button). if you can manage to get it to run worth a damn past the third level, more power to you. This is one of my favorite scrolling shooters of all time, much less games on the GBA, has been since I first laid hands on it back in 2007. Very few games ever used this style, it's an utter shame. That being said, very little reason to buy this, they don't even provide an easily accessible version of the ROM the executable runs, which would have been the only real saving argument for this, much like Sega Mega Drive and Genesis classics back in the day. It's better to experience it in an emulator that actually can competently run it, however you choose to get your hands on it. The best I could possibly recommend if you absolutely must possess this ROM dissection + bad emulator combo is that you buy it on the most extreme sale possible, a dollar or less. Whatever Piko Interactive used to run their version of the code, it won't do this game justice. I suppose if nothing else, it appears that nothing has been modified in the game itself- it's as-is to however their reverse engineering undid the original dump of the game to make this product. I hate to say it, but something has finally surpassed the Metal Slug releases DotEmu did in terms of awful- and at least those had features of any kind that added value. This has... save states. Things you can already do in any GBA emulator with a ROM of the same game.
Iridion 3D is an ancient game from 2001. It's a whopping 22 years old at the time of this review. The game lacks support for any modern gaming display resolutions (or widescreen monitors), hasn't been modernised or updated to run smoothly on modern gaming PCs. Despite this lack of modernisation, it carries a pretty high price tag for such an ancient game. This seems to have been put on Steam as a nostalgia gouge. This handheld console (Gameboy Advance) ported game is meant to look like a real space combat sim, but it's just a dumbed down rail shooter. It's advertised as having 3D graphics but this is only a rudimentary effect, raster images/sprites displayed over an ultra simplistic, ultra low poly 3D framework. As a rail shooter, you can move your little ship up, down, left or right but there's no navigation, you just fight waves of enemies as they come at you. Galaga from a different perspective... but what do we expect from console games? Let's not ignore the elephant in the room. 2001... a full 11 years after Wing Commander already used this graphics technique (and several years after Wing Commander moved to true 3D textured polys)... this is the best the console devs could come up with? It's lucky for the console gaming industry that console peasants wouldn't know quality if it hit them in the face. So where does this leave this 2001 farce? Not in a good place. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The game only displays in 4:3 pillarboxed aspect ratio. It's possible they developed this using an old CRT they found in a dumpster, or this game has been specifically designed for people gaming on PC's from 1995... either way, this isn't really acceptable in the modern era of PC gaming. Because this is designed for consoles, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the inferior console gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the console-centric developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for consoles forces upon a game. Once more, console peasants have made gaming worse for everyone. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 2 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. Iridion 3D is relatively expensive for an abandonware nostalgia gouge, at $13 USD, and it's not worth it. Charging this much money for an abandoned shovelware console game 22 years after the fact on Steam is just an insult to PC gamers. The game is just too old, hasn't been modernised. And as the old saying goes, you can't go home again. Even when it was new, this was never a triple-A game. This is the kind of game that went almost directly from the warehouse into the cheap bargain bins at the front of the shop. Now, on Steam, without any modernisation? This is impossible to recommend.
Pros: - Solid port of a nostalgic game boy advance game. - Still a fun bullet-hell-ish shooter. - Soundtrack is great. - Visuals are very fun. - Boss design is great. - Ability to save anywhere is a great quality of life feature. Cons: - Not many extras or options included with the port. No filters, shaders, or border customization. - Game is 1-2 hours long. Highly recommend if you can get this one and the second game on a good sale.
Nah, I kinda regret getting it. i played for 6 minutes, lost all of my lives because of the warped perspective, no control instructions (or sensical storyline), eventually died and would have had to start over from the beginning. no thank you. Save your money for better games!
Iridion 3D and Iridion II are both a dollar each currently on Fanatical Retro bundle, so grab them now! When I was in junior high, my friend gifted me this game as my birthday present because he knew I had a gameboy advance. The 3d effect was cool and the music is awesome. It's a nostalgia trip for me.
