Interplayer

Game for Geeks?
I have never ever come across a game that’s similar to this on Steam. I mean, I do know that coding games exist but I’ve never got my hands on one. My curator team should consider themselves lucky since they have a reviewer who also happens to know how to code since I am probably the only person who can attempt to review this game 🙄. Jokes aside, the developer attached a message along with a copy of his game. According to that message, he is an 18-year-old Japanese Student who completely designed and developed this game which won the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award for its idea in the U-22 Programming Contest 2022. He also refers to himself as the strongest under-22 programmer in all of Japan. Well, after playing this game, I can’t disagree.
About This Game

Storyline
I was surprised that this game actually came with a very small plot. The story just exists for the sake of narration. Before I literally give you a small gist of the plot, let me just let you know that the overall story is extremely basic. It’s literally something that even a Kindergartener can come up with. This is totally fine since the main charm of this game is its gameplay and the narrative aspect of it is just a bonus. So yeah, the plot goes something like this:
You work as an assistant for a doctor. The doc, being incompetent, deleted all the data from the project you two have been working on. Since you’re his assistant, you’re tasked with retrieving all the lost data.

Gameplay Mechanics
At first glance at the gameplay screen, one might easily get overwhelmed. This is because there is some circuit-looking diagram with random symbols scattered around on the left half of the screen along with a code compiler screen on the other half. Luckily, the game comes with an amazing tutorial that explains almost everything before leaving you on your own. So, what coding language does this game teach? Well, the developer literally made his own mini-language that is heavily inspired by Python. He named it “Tolerance”. So, if you know any of the Object-Oriented Languages, this game will be pretty easy to play. In order to make the game easier for players who have 0 coding knowledge, he stuck with simple functions like basic Arithmetic Operators, Arrays, If statements, For Loops, etc. Well, the concept of stack statements is also included which is a pretty tricky area for me too. But fret not since the tutorial will give you a clear understanding of what you have to do in order to clear the levels. After all, it’s a good learning experience that allows you to flex on other people by saying that you have some coding knowledge! So, the main gameplay involves typing code without actually typing anything. You control a ball that can move across each tile and whenever it passes through any element, that element will be added to the program. If two elements don’t belong next to each other, it will immediately throw an error. Luckily, this doesn’t force you to restart the whole level as you can simply CTRL + Z to revert the error. Once you type in the code to get the desired output which is shown at the beginning of each level, you can execute the code. It’s so hard to explain the gameplay in this title. I did my best, but if you want a clear understanding, I recommend playing the game for yourself!
Visuals and Sound
I am pretty impressed with how the game looks. Like, the UI and assets used are perfect. Everything suits the game’s concept. The thing I love the most is how he was able to replicate the coding screen which can be seen in softwares like Visual Studio, Turbo C, etc. The game has only one background track which is acceptable since this isn’t a game someone would spend days playing. I admire the sound effects that were added to almost every animation. This small extra effort makes the game a lot more attractive. An easy 10/10 in this entire segment from me!
Pros

Very unique concept. It’s not every day you see code-related games on Steam.
The game follows a custom programming language that the developer made named Tolerance. Inspiration for this was taken from Python meaning that it follows the Object Oriented Programming concepts.
The overall gameplay experience is very different. It will surely give you a very unique experience.
The visuals are very simple yet amazing.
This game’s idea won an award at the U-22 Programming Contest 2022!

Cons
Wow, it’s been a while since I wrote a review for a game that has no cons. I just find this game to be flawless. I mean, yes, the English in the narration is not really grammatically correct. Who cares though? This was developed by an 18-year-old Japanese student, so let’s just overlook that flaw since it doesn’t affect the gameplay at all.
Conclusion
This was my first code-related video game and I actually enjoyed it. So, it’s obvious that I recommend this game. It’s barely $3, I am sure it won’t hurt your pockets!
Pretty nice Don't expect most of the solutions you cook up in your head to work due to how the puzzles are laid out As an example: output = x + 1; But there's no 1 in the board so you'd need to do output = x + (2 / 2) Makes you think creatively on how to get to the desired output based on just the limitations of the functionality on the board Note: Compiler errors are in Japanese whether you're playing in English or not, hope they get translated soon. Not like they matter much however, the output errors can still be checked and are in English. I do wish that there's a way to check the value in the variables you're using in combination with the output to keep track of what's happening in there however.
