I want to play Illusion: A Tale of the Mind. It has a beautiful story. The music is engaging. The issue is I cannot complete even Chapter 1. There are a number of sequences in which main character must run away from a monster of some sorts. I have learned through repitition hundreds and hundreds of times that these "run away" sequences are very unique. Apparently, they must be done in absolute perfect sychronicity. I have practised literally until my fingers have blisters on them. I have never completed one particular scenario involving a "run away" sequence.. This makes me unable to progress any further in the game, I have sought out help on the forum. There appears to be no one at all there who can assist with this issue. I have sought out You Tube,Search Engines,Walkthroughs. I can find absolutely nothing that provides any assistance regarding these sequences. Player (Me) reaches a point where you just are saying............What is the sense in this? The task cannot be accomplished. I would welcome any help I can get but so far I haven't received any. In many games there exists the choice of skipping tasks like this. Herewith that option simply does not exist.
I have mixed feelings about this game so take this positive review with a grain of salt. First of all, this point&click puzzle game is just the first episode with 3 chapters, which means the story does not have a final conclusion. Based on the poor sales of the game, I have to assume that we are not going to get the second episode. It took me about 5 hours to beat it, which is a little longer than I expected - considering its creative level design. To my surprise, there are certain aspects of this title that I really enjoyed, such as beautiful scenery, psychological themes, interesting use of cameras, and a sad story. It's not a complete disaster like Sonic 06, but you will need a lot of patience to tolerate some of its less ideal elements.
Technical Problems:
Let's get the elephant out of the way - the game requires you to hold the left mouse button to move, as opposed to just clicking. So technically it is not a point&click game, but rather a game that should have been a point&click. I think they implemented these controls for the chasing sequences, but holding the mouse is not exactly the best way of doing it either. In regards to those running away sequences, they can be pretty frustrating because it takes a long time to respawn, plus the checkpoints are not very friendly. However, most of the game is just solving casual puzzles, anyone can do it. Unfortunately, many of the puzzles happen off-screen, so you constantly have to move around to see what is going on. Also, the game does not have a chapter select, so if you missed some achievements, you will have to do a full circle. There are many more small things that I could mention, but those are the main problems that I would consider to be very damaging to the experience.
Puzzle Gameplay:
80% of the puzzles have something to do with alignment - moving your camera for example. The other 20% are like jigsaw puzzles and activating switches. As I said earlier, some of the things happen outside of your view, so it can be very annoying. I will say that I enjoyed the visual aspect of those puzzles, as the stages are generally designed around the riddle. I personally did not find the game to be very cryptic or difficult. Overall it has a nice variety of puzzles if you into that kind of gameplay, even though sometimes it takes a long time to find hidden glass shards to progress.
Narrative / Visuals:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1547977431 (this is the main reason I did not give it a negative review, some* parts of this game are just beautiful) This game is not consistent when it comes to visuals and narrative. You could probably nitpick the voice acting as well, but that is the least of your worries. Some stages look like they were made in 2010, while other levels have some of the best backgrounds I have ever seen in a video game. I did not enjoy the story by the end of chapter 1, chapter 2 however, was a lot better. You know, it did manage to pull on my heartstrings even though the "plot twist" was very predictable. Most of the story revolves around 4 characters, and I think the game did a decent job developing their background. I can also see some narrative similarities to Contrast , I wonder if it was vaguely inspired by it. Pros: + interesting visuals / some* stages are gorgeous + psychological themes + surreal puzzle design + decent story Cons: - sluggish controls - clunky chase sequences - subpar settings - some off-screen puzzles - no chapter select - poor consistency with art and story Bonus Con (!) - you think they will make EP2?
Overall Thoughts: 6/10
I don't dislike the game, but it could have been so much better. Considering the lack of conclusion for the story, I completely understand if nobody wants to buy this. The devs made some poor design decisions, especially with those controls. I assume the game either lacked funding or talent because it is obviously not polished. Even after all of the bad things that I mentioned, I think it's alright. If anything, I really liked looking at some of the stages, and the narrative was somewhat compelling.
Review By: http://store.steampowered.com/curator/31294838-Hidden-Gem-Discovery/
Illusion: A Tale of the Mind is not good, not bad, but it sure ain't ugly. In fact, the scenarios in the game are captivating and the impeccable musical accompaniment is key to glue these and the story together. A story which is decent but could have been much more compelling had the writing and voiceover been slightly less rough. Unfortunately, the gameplay's kind of a trainwreck: wonky camera angles, awful mouse controls, poorly-designed chase scenes, changes happening out of line of sight - and that is leaving out how pushy your bunny companion can get while you try to figure a puzzle out. I mean, chill out, Topsy. Still not bad overall, but it leaves much room for improvement.
Beautiful artwork and music mixed with fairly easy puzzles and a storyline that may tug at your heartstrings. However, the ending is less than desirable making the game not worth the $19.99.
Illusion: A Tale of the Mind is by far one of THE most underappreciated and underrated games I have ever seen on steam. It's underestimated regardless of its "mostly positive" rating and some of the reviews below are extremely unfair to the game. I was surprised it has such a low price tag, then I understood it lowered price as the time went by. The game itself is COMPLETE. Nevermind reviews saying it has an open ending. It doesn't. The story IS there along with everything you need to understand what happened and how it ended. Yes, I can see a story for a next addition but it doesn't change the fact that this game is full. The gameplay itself is smooth and easy (or better.. easy to control) but it will require a few tries on some levels. The puzzles are fun with a medium degree of difficulty and vary between them as to not do the same thing over and over. Above all is the story itself, the characters and how it is presented inbetween of the puzzles. I liked all characters (including the villain), the voice acting is very good, the story is complicated enough to spark interest but also simple enough in the end to understand exactly what happened. The visuals and sound are exceptional.. This game had no reason to not do well on steam. Perhaps the problem was exactly this.. That it exists ONLY on steam. But give it a shot. Especially now with 2$-4$ price.. It's REALLY worth the hours you'll put into it (my estimation is around 6h-10h depending on your skills) and the tiny pricetag it now has. From me, it's a HIGHLY recommended game. You're missing out if you pass it up (obviously, you should be atleast somewhat interested in either the story, artstyle or gameplay)!
