If Only...

[h1] Played this on the Oculus Rift with Touch controllers and game played fine [/h1] Unfortunately, there's really not a lot to do here. You basically MS paint "fill" the building. Then watch a day/night cycle in about 3 minutes. Then that's it. There's nothing more to do. You can't even paint that much, only certain spots. [h1] If Only ... there was more to do I would have rated this app positive [/h1] As is, it is not worth the download.

If Only... is not a game. Games contain meaningful gamelike interaction and game loops, which are absent in this software. Instead of being a game, If Only... is a software application that provides a garbage "VR experience", essentially some architects in Australia decided they were so full of themselves, that showing off house concepts is the same thing as a video game. Their egos are more important than you, the gamer. $100 USD later through Steam Direct and they managed to make gaming slightly worse for everyone... polluting the store with more non-game crap we have to wade through to find real games. For those unfamiliar with what actually makes something a game, a "game loop" describes the interaction and feedback a gamer has when playing a game. Tetris, for example, has a game loop where a random block appears, the gamer interacts with the block to position it, and then the game decides if that finishes a row or not, increases the players score if any rows were completed, then gives the gamer another block to position. Counter-Strike has a game loop where a player seeks another player, tests their skill against that player by shooting them or being shot, the computer rewards the player if they win, and then if the player survives, they repeat that loop. There's no loop here, no true interactive feedback. It simply is not a game, it cannot be "played". This has misleadingly been launched in the "Games" section of Steam instead of the "Software" section. This is a common mistake for developers who are new to Steam, or don't understand the difference between games and software which isn't a game. It seems this software published incorrectly as a game is simply lack of experience/knowledge of the correct process. Publishing things which aren't games on Steam in the Games section as games is misleading to gamers and somewhat harmful, because it pollutes the Steam marketplace and takes away visibility and market exposure for genuine game developers who do the right thing and make games for gamers. There are no gameplay loops in this software, no "gameplay", no meaningful game like interaction. It's a software application and as such has no merits as a video game for gamers. Because of this, I cannot recommend this non-game software as a game to gamers.

If Only... is a free VR art experience that you can change the colors of the exhibit. It worked on my system, looked ok, played ok, sounded ok. Try it and delete it.

So picture it. It's the Steam Summer Sale pf 2021 and you come across this little gem. You begin in a little hub surrounded by cascading water. There's a sign that explains the event lasts three minutes, and a light portal to warp inside. Once inside you may do as you please. I was pretty sure I needed a place made out of floral patterns, very spiffy. So, you can change the lanes and building materials, play with bubbles or hang out with pigeons. The day to night cycle is pretty, and you can warp around the location using the light portals. I liked watching the neon accents come on at night, and the lighting really is pretty. Then you end the day by watching the stars while fog rolls in. Super nice for free, though I'd love to see free locomotion as an option.
