First off: this thing is beautiful. It reminds me a bit of the video "The Third and the Seventh", which is something that I've been hoping to find in VR form. It also reminds me of dreams where I am suddenly a post-human navigating a strange new world. The aesthetics are incredible. I want to live there. I don't hate the movement mechanics, and this is speaking as someone who mostly plays Beat Saber due to my seeming inability to cultivate solid VR legs. I only feel the slightest bit queasy, so that's cool. The directional audio is super cool and the room with the music broken down into four parts being played through separate orbs was amazing. I also enjoyed the crackling from the torches. The music itself is well done but not really my thing, and that's fine. That's all a matter of taste, so I won't be too critical here. It fits the visual aesthetics well enough. I wish it were more interactive. I kept trying to teleport to places that seemed like they should be accessible but weren't, and that's always kind of jarring. My only actual complaint, which is in no way unique to this experience is the lack of lefty support. Especially when using controllers that are completely symmetrical, not being able to use my dominant hand to get around is weirdly unpleasant and increases the likelihood of moving unpredictably, which in turn increases the chances of motion sickness. I'll put it this way: would you want to use your wrong hand to get around in this world? No? I don't either, and while I have to put up with many things that aren't designed for me, it shouldn't be too difficult to add full functionality to the left controller. Google Earth VR has full lefty support. Keep in mind that left handed people feel their handedness just as deeply as right handers and being forced to use your wrong hand for things that are recreational is frustrating. I look forward to watching this grow into a full album. This is already a beautiful experience.
I love this sort of art but man what is going on with the good reviews. This is what I'd expect from a student showing me a half finished project - a couple of good initial art ideas but over repeated and very clunky bad and unfinished navigation. Certainly wouldn't pay a penny for it in this state. If I couldn't get a refund I'd feel very ripped off.
I've been a fan of i-Exist for a number of years now. I have to say, with the kind of ambition these guys bring to their music and artistic styles, they have truly blasted through a new standard for the creative world. Over the years their music has grown into something beyond a simple collection of tracks to listen to. They create unequaled innovative experiences with everything they do, and Consciousness is the next great step in pushing forward what can be done with entertainment. i-Exist, with this new musical album as Virtual Reality meta, has built something unseen since Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon; a truly fascinating and multilayered reflection of the deepest and most ineffable corners of the mind and soul. The artwork and detail in Consciousness VR is stunning. The designs in the walls, the sand on the beach, the doorways; I felt like I was wandering through a dream, or perhaps a world where surrealism and structure cross paths. The music is just beautiful, of course, and serves as the perfect backdrop for the visuals. If you have any love for meditation, Escher, innovative experiences, smashing artistic boundaries, poetry, or have any love for a boldly new experience, this is the VR experience for you.
